Het korte antwoord

This cognitive aptitude test gives a first view of how quickly and accurately a candidate takes in new information and solves problems. In 20 questions and 12 minutes it covers numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning, plus attention to detail in tables. It suits operations, administration, customer support, sales, trainee and junior professional roles.

Wat het meet

Numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning, and attention to detail in tables, under time pressure.

Numerical reasoning

Covers working out figures from everyday workplace quantities, sometimes typing the answer rather than choosing it.

Verbal reasoning

Covers taking in short statements and situations and selecting the answer supported by the information.

Abstract reasoning

Covers finding a rule in shapes and patterns that differ by form, shading, size, position or turn.

Nauwkeurigheid

Covers reading tables carefully and using their figures accurately while time is limited.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

Numeric answers

The candidate: Works out a figure and types the number.

You see: Accurate working with numbers, without options to guess from.

Picture choice

The candidate: Studies a pattern or diagram and picks the picture that fits.

You see: Reasoning with shapes and patterns that does not depend on reading.

Roles this test fits

Most roles where people learn new tasks and solve problems: operations, administration, customer support, sales, trainee and junior professional roles.

What the test shows that a resume does not

  1. How someone handles new material

A resume lists past jobs. This test shows how a candidate works through numbers, short texts and shape patterns they have not seen before, with the same 12 minutes for everyone.

  2. Four areas, reported separately

Sub-skill results for numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning and attention to detail show where a candidate's reasoning is strongest, not only one overall figure.

  3. Care with detail in tables

The attention to detail questions show whether a candidate reads figures in a table accurately while the clock runs, a habit that rarely shows up on paper.

  4. A fair start for short work histories

For trainee and junior roles, where there is little track record to judge, it gives every applicant the same kinds of questions in common words, with scratch paper and numbers chosen so no calculator is needed.

How the general cognitive ability test holds up against AI help

Each candidate gets a different set of questions drawn from large pools, in a different order, with the answer options shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys never leave HireValid's servers. Timing runs on the server, so reloading the page brings back the same question with only the time that was left, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question.

Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Each invitation link is personal and expires. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and very fast answers, and summarizes them in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for the employer to review. It never decides on its own. With the candidate's consent, the employer can also turn on webcam photos.

How to use the result with a work sample and interview

A reasoning result tells you how someone takes in new information. A work sample tells you whether they can do the job's tasks now. Read the two together, and never use the test result alone.

For an office or operations role, the sample might be organizing a short list of tasks with conflicting deadlines. For a support role, it might be answering a customer request against a short policy. Then hold a structured interview with the same questions for everyone. Look at the four sub-skill results as prompts for what to explore, for example a strong verbal result and a weaker attention to detail result, rather than as a verdict. The pre-employment testing guide shows how the pieces fit together.

Interview questions to pair with the test

  1. Tell me about a time you had to learn a new system or process quickly. How did you check you had understood it?

Concrete steps, such as asking for an example, testing on a small case or writing a checklist, and a clear way of confirming they had it right.

  2. Describe a time you spotted an error in a schedule, report or set of figures. What did you do next?

Whether they noticed it through careful checking rather than luck, and whether they fixed the cause and told the right people.

  3. Walk me through a problem at work or in your studies that had no set answer. How did you approach it?

A method: breaking the problem down, forming a first idea, checking it and changing course when the evidence said so.

  4. When two instructions seem to conflict, how do you work out what to do?

Reading both closely, naming what is unclear and asking a focused question rather than guessing.

Who should use this cognitive aptitude test?

Use this cognitive aptitude test when a role asks people to learn new tasks and solve problems, and no single kind of reasoning clearly dominates. It is the broadest of HireValid's reasoning tests, because it samples four areas in one sitting: working with numbers, reasoning with words, finding the rule in a pattern of shapes, and reading tables with care.

That makes it a good fit for operations, administration, customer support and sales roles, and for trainee and junior professional hires, where there is little work history to go on. It pairs well with a practical test of the tools or communication the role needs, for example in an assessment for an office administrator, a customer support agent or a general hire.

If one kind of reasoning clearly matters most, a focused test usually tells you more. A role built on figures may get more from the numerical reasoning test, and a role built on written policies from the verbal reasoning test. Avoid stacking several reasoning tests for one role: it lengthens the assessment for candidates without adding much new evidence. The test library lists every option side by side.

Cognitive ability or aptitude: what is the difference?

In everyday hiring language the two terms overlap, and many employers use them interchangeably. The useful distinction is scope.

Cognitive ability usually means general reasoning: how well someone learns and solves unfamiliar problems across many kinds of material. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management describes the general trait as general mental ability, and notes that tests may report one overall score or separate scores for specific areas. See the glossary entry on the cognitive ability test.

Aptitude usually means potential in a particular area, such as numbers or language, or for a particular kind of work. A numerical aptitude test is narrower than a general cognitive ability test. The glossary entry on aptitude explains the term.

This test is general in that sense: it mixes numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning and attention to detail, and reports each area as well as the whole. That makes it a sensible default when you want a reasoning measure and do not yet know which area matters most for the role.

Using a cognitive ability test for employment fairly

Any cognitive ability test for employment needs care on fairness. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management notes that cognitive ability tests typically produce larger racial and ethnic differences than other valid predictors, such as structured interviews, and recommends combining them with other assessment methods to lower potential adverse impact.

This test is written to keep irrelevant barriers low. Questions use everyday workplace situations and common words, with no money symbols, idioms or local knowledge, metric units, and names from many backgrounds. The shape patterns differ in form, shading, size, position and turn, never in color. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate, and the numbers are chosen so no calculator is needed.

In practice, treat the result as one input, never the whole decision. Use the test only for roles that genuinely need broad reasoning, combine it with a work sample and a structured interview, and say in every invitation how to request an accommodation such as extra time. After each hiring round, compare selection rates across groups; the four-fifths rule is a simple first check.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use everyday workplace situations and common words, with no money symbols, idioms or local knowledge, metric units, and names from many backgrounds. The patterns are shapes that differ in form, shading, size, position and turn, never in color. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate, and the numbers are chosen so no calculator is needed.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Veelgestelde vragen

What is a general mental ability test?+

It is a test of broad reasoning that combines several kinds of questions, such as verbal, numerical and pattern questions. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management uses the term for the general trait that cognitive ability tests measure. The HireValid general cognitive ability test is this kind of test: 20 questions in 12 minutes across numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning and attention to detail.

How long is the general cognitive ability test?+

The scored test has 20 questions in 12 minutes. Before it starts, candidates work through a practice set of 4 questions with 4 minutes, so they learn the formats before the clock matters. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question, and scratch paper is allowed.

What kinds of questions are in the general cognitive ability test?+

The questions cover four areas: numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning with shape patterns, and attention to detail in tables. Candidates answer by choosing one option, choosing several options, picking a picture, or typing a number. The numbers are chosen so no calculator is needed.

Is the general cognitive ability test hard?+

The time limit is a large part of the challenge. With 20 questions in 12 minutes, there are about 36 seconds per question on average, so the test rewards steady work and careful reading over rushing. The practice set helps candidates spend their time reasoning rather than learning instructions under the clock.

Should I use the general cognitive ability test or a numerical or verbal reasoning test?+

Use the general test when no single kind of reasoning clearly dominates the role and you want a broad view across numbers, words, shape patterns and detail. Use a focused test when one area matters most, such as numbers for a junior analyst or careful reading for a case handler. Avoid stacking several reasoning tests, which lengthens the assessment without adding much evidence.

Does a general cognitive ability test predict job performance?+

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management notes that tests of general cognitive ability are good predictors of job performance and training success for a wide variety of jobs, and work better the more complex the job. They still capture only one part of performance, so read the result alongside a work sample and a structured interview.

What does the cognitive aptitude test score tell an employer?+

It offers evidence about numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning and attention to detail in tables under time pressure. Treat the result as a prompt for review, not a verdict or a stand-alone hiring decision. A work sample can show how a candidate handles a relevant task, while a structured interview gives you a consistent way to explore their examples.

Is this an employment cognitive ability test for every role?+

No. It is intended for roles where people need to learn new tasks and solve problems, including operations, administration, customer support, sales, trainee and junior professional roles. Its broad mix may be less useful when one type of reasoning dominates the work. Consider a focused assessment or practical work sample for that need, and review the evidence alongside an interview.
