Het korte antwoord

The Coding: Arrays test is an intermediate programming assessment for software engineers, web developers, back-end and full-stack developers and other programming roles. In one coding task, candidates write a working solution that scans, rearranges, combines or summarizes a list or grid of values. The score is the share of hidden test cases their code passes.

Wat het meet

Writing correct code that reads, transforms and summarizes arrays.

Array manipulation

This covers writing code to read, transform, and summarize a list of values or a grid of values within stated size limits.

Coding tasks

The candidate: Writes or fixes code in an editor and runs it against examples.

You see: Working code, checked against hidden test cases, not just knowledge of syntax.

1 task in 35 minutes.

Roles this test fits

Software engineers, web developers, back-end and full-stack developers, and other programming roles where everyday work means processing lists of data correctly and without wasted effort.

What this coding task can show

  1. See code handle real list operations

Candidates write a solution that scans, rearranges, combines or summarizes values, which shows more than a resume's description of programming experience.

  2. Lists and grids within stated limits

The task may hand the candidate a single list or a grid of values, with every size limit given, so you see whether the code stays correct across the whole stated range.

  3. No overflow trap in any language

Every value fits in a standard 32-bit integer, so a candidate is not marked down for the integer limits of the language they chose. Hidden cases check what the program outputs, not its style.

Test integrity signals for review

Each candidate gets a different question set from large pools. The browser receives one question at a time; answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 35-minute timer runs on the server, and reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time. Candidates cannot go back. Code runs against hidden cases on the server, and pastes into the editor are recorded. HireValid also records signals such as time away from the test tab and summarizes them in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for you to review. It does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, you can add webcam photos at random moments. See how we build our tests.

Use the score as evidence, not a verdict

Review the share of hidden test cases passed alongside a relevant work sample and a structured interview. Ask how the candidate would approach list processing in work relevant to the role, then compare their explanation with the code and outputs. With a single task, scores depend heavily on that problem; reliability will be reported after 200 candidates complete it, and no norms exist yet. Use the pre-employment testing guide to plan a broader review.

Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken

  1. How would you approach a task that asks you to combine two lists of values while staying within stated input limits?

Listen for a clear explanation of how they would read the inputs, transform the values, and check the resulting output against examples.

  2. Tell me about a time you needed to summarize a list or grid of data in code. How did you check the result?

Listen for a concrete account of the data being processed, the approach they took, and how they checked correctness.

  3. If a solution worked for the examples but failed a hidden case, how would you investigate it?

Listen for a step-by-step plan to revisit the input limits, trace how values are read and transformed, and test the resulting output.

Fairness and accommodations

Each task is a self-contained problem stated in plain US English with every input limit given, so no knowledge of a particular industry, culture or framework is needed. Candidates choose from six common languages, every value fits in a standard 32-bit integer so no language is disadvantaged by overflow, and the hidden cases check what the program outputs, not its style.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: with a single task, scores depend heavily on that one problem. Reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it, and no norms exist yet.

Test details

A single programming task in which the candidate writes a working solution to a problem built around arrays: scanning, rearranging, combining or summarizing a list of values, or a grid of them, within stated size limits. The solution runs against the task's examples and a set of hidden test cases, and the score is the share of those cases it passes. Candidates may write in Python, JavaScript, Java, C#, C++ or Go.

  • Questions are in English.
  • Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
  • 1 practice task, 10 minutes, before the timed test.
  • Taken on a desktop or laptop computer.

Veelgestelde vragen

How does the Coding: Arrays test account for fairness?+

The task is self-contained, written in plain US English and gives every input limit, so no knowledge of a particular industry, culture or framework is needed. Candidates choose from six common languages, and every value fits in a standard 32-bit integer so none of them is disadvantaged by overflow.

Can candidates use aids on the Coding: Arrays test?+

Scratch paper is allowed, which helps when tracing indexes through a list or a grid by hand. The test needs a computer, runs for 35 minutes and has a single task, so there is no earlier question to return to.

What practice is available for the Coding: Arrays test?+

The practice set has one question and takes 10 minutes. It lets candidates get familiar with the editor and the format before the scored task, and it does not count toward the score.

Which roles and level fit the Coding: Arrays test?+

It is an intermediate test for software engineers, web developers, back-end and full-stack developers and other programming roles where everyday work means processing lists of data correctly and without wasted effort. For a broader programming signal, see the [Software Engineer test](/tests/role-specific-skills/software-engineer).
