Het korte antwoord

The QA engineering test is an intermediate, 10-minute hiring assessment for software test engineers, QA analysts, automation engineers, test leads, and release-quality owners. Candidates choose test cases for stated requirements, judge defect reporting and discussion, plan testing under time limits, and interpret short automated tests and results. It provides evidence for a human review, not a hiring decision.

Wat het meet

Test design, defect reporting and team communication, test planning, and test execution and automation.

Test design

Candidates choose test cases that address a stated requirement.

Defect reporting and team communication

Candidates judge how to report a defect and discuss it with a team.

Test planning and process

Candidates plan testing when time is limited.

Test execution and automation

Candidates interpret short automated tests and their results.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

20 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Software test engineers, QA analysts and testers, test automation engineers, test leads, and product or delivery managers who own release quality. Security testers can use it to check their general testing practice.

What this test can show

  1. Requirement-based judgment

Questions ask candidates to choose test cases for a stated requirement, giving you evidence of how they connect software behavior to test coverage.

  2. Defect communication in context

Candidates consider how to report and discuss a defect, which can help you explore how they would share a software issue with a team.

  3. Code reading, not code writing

Short Python or JavaScript examples ask candidates to read automated tests and results. The questions name no commercial testing tool or vendor terms.

  4. Everyday scenarios and scratch paper

Booking forms, shopping carts, and sign-up pages provide familiar testing contexts. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate.

Test integrity signals for review

Each candidate receives a different question set, question order, and answer-option order. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. The employer can review these signals in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; neither makes a decision on its own. With candidate consent, random webcam photos can be added. See How we build our tests.

Use the score as one source of evidence

Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. For example, ask the candidate to select test cases for a stated requirement, then discuss their choices and a possible defect report. The score supports a person’s review; it is not a pass mark or a decision by itself. For related skills, see the Software Engineer and Clean Code tests.

Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken

  1. How would you choose test cases for a sign-up form with a stated password rule?

Listen for a clear connection between the stated requirement and the cases selected, including how the candidate explains what each case is intended to check.

  2. How would you report a defect that a developer says they cannot reproduce?

Listen for a clear account of the defect and a thoughtful approach to discussing it with teammates.

  3. How would you plan testing if the available time became shorter?

Listen for how the candidate makes and explains testing choices when time is limited.

  4. Walk me through how you read an automated test that fails only some of the time.

Listen for a reasoned look at the test code and its results, rather than an answer based only on tool terminology.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions are tool-neutral: they name no commercial testing tool and need no particular vendor's terms, only widely shared testing practice. Scenarios use everyday products such as booking forms, shopping carts and sign-up pages, with plain US English, no idioms, no money symbols beyond what a scenario needs, and names from many backgrounds. Code is short, in Python or JavaScript, and asks the candidate to read it rather than write it. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, timed set of practical questions for people who test software for a living. Candidates choose test cases for a stated requirement, judge how to report and discuss a defect, plan testing when time is short, and read short automated tests and their results. Most questions are built around a small table, a requirement or a few lines of code.

  • Questions are in English.
  • Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 3 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen

Do candidates write code in the QA Engineering test?+

No. Code appears in some questions as a few lines of Python or JavaScript, and candidates read it and its results rather than write it. Other questions are built around a small table or a stated requirement, so the test suits testers who read automated tests as well as those who write them.

Are tools or vendor terms required for the QA Engineering test?+

No particular vendor’s terms are needed. Questions are tool-neutral, name no commercial testing tool and rely on widely shared testing practice. Scenarios use everyday products such as booking forms, shopping carts and sign-up pages, in plain US English with no idioms and names from many backgrounds.

What can candidates use during the QA Engineering test?+

Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate. The test has 20 multiple-choice questions in 10 minutes, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. A practice set has 4 questions and takes 3 minutes.

Which roles suit the QA Engineering test?+

It is an intermediate test for software test engineers, QA analysts and testers, test automation engineers, and test leads. Product or delivery managers who own release quality can also use it; security testers can check their general testing practice.
