What this retail sales test can show
Look beyond the resume
See how candidates use judgment in shopper conversations, including finding needs and suggesting an item from the details provided.
Needs and matching scored apart
Finding out what a shopper wants and suggesting an item are scored separately, so you see whether a candidate is stronger at asking or at matching.
Repeat customers, not just the sale
One sub-skill looks at caring for customers so they come back, which matters where advice and rapport drive sales.
Avoid retailer-specific knowledge checks
Each question supplies the store policy and product details it relies on, so you can focus on sales judgment rather than familiarity with one brand.

Test integrity signals for review
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid's servers. This 10-minute test does not allow back-navigation. If a candidate reloads, the server returns the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and blocked copy attempts appear in the timeline. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes, and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline. Employers review the signals; the system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add random webcam photos. Read how we build our tests.

Use the score as evidence, not a verdict
Review the score alongside a work sample and a structured interview. For a work sample, give candidates a shopper scenario with supplied product details and ask them to explain a suitable recommendation. Use the score to choose follow-up topics, not as a pass mark or a decision on its own. For roles that mix selling with service, compare the Customer Service Skills test.

Fairness and accommodations
Every question supplies the store policy and product details it relies on, so it rewards judgment rather than experience with one retailer or brand. Customers and staff have names from many backgrounds and vary in age and gender, and no response is keyed on assumptions about who a shopper is. Prices, currency symbols, idioms, holidays and sports are left out, and the reading level is kept plain so the test measures sales judgment rather than reading speed.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A short, timed set of store-floor situations that asks how a candidate would talk with shoppers, find out what they are looking for, use the product details at hand to suggest the right item, and look after customers so they return. Each question gives the facts it needs, so no knowledge of a particular store or brand is required.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 3 minutes, before the timed test.
