Het korte antwoord
The DigitalOcean test is a 10-minute, 15-question assessment of hands-on knowledge for running, protecting, storing data on and monitoring DigitalOcean infrastructure. Its intermediate-level scenarios cover Droplets, networking, storage, monitoring and alerting. Use it to support hiring for cloud and infrastructure engineers, DevOps and site reliability engineers, system administrators, or solutions architects.
Wat het meet
Hands-on knowledge of running, protecting, storing data on and watching DigitalOcean infrastructure.
Running and resizing Droplets
Questions cover creating, sizing and recovering Droplets, including what to do in a described server scenario.
Private networks, firewalls and DNS
Candidates consider private networks, Cloud Firewall rules, DNS and load balancers in service scenarios.
Storage
Questions cover block volumes, Spaces object storage and managed databases.
Monitoring and alerting
Candidates interpret metrics and consider alert policies and uptime checks.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Cloud and infrastructure engineers, DevOps and site reliability engineers, system administrators and solutions architects who build or run services on DigitalOcean.
Evidence for infrastructure hiring
Look beyond listed experience
The scenarios show how candidates approach Droplet sizing, recovery and infrastructure decisions, beyond what a resume lists.
Focus follow-up conversations
See whether candidates can interpret small tables of firewall rules or metric readings, then use the result to focus interview time.
Spend less time on basic screening
A short, structured assessment gives you a consistent starting point before a work sample and interview.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the assessment is delivered
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large question pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser shows one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. This 10-minute test does not allow back-navigation; reloading brings back the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. Personal invitation links expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away, pastes and answers given faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. The employer reviews the evidence; it never decides on its own. With candidate consent, random webcam photos can be added.

Use the score as evidence
Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview, never on its own. For a work sample, ask the candidate to reason through a service scenario and explain their choices around Droplets, networking or monitoring. Use the interview to explore how they approach trade-offs and recovery. For adjacent skill areas, consider the Kubernetes, Docker or Terraform tests when they match the role. See how we build our tests for more about the assessment approach.
Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken
A service needs more capacity, and its current Droplet is under pressure. How would you investigate what to change?
Listen for a step-by-step approach to sizing and checking the situation before making a change.
Tell me how you would investigate a service that cannot reach another service on a private network.
Listen for a reasoned review of network access and relevant firewall or DNS details.
What would you consider when choosing how to store service data and monitor its availability?
Listen for relevant distinctions among storage options, metrics, alert policies and uptime checks.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Questions describe each situation in words and small tables rather than control panel screenshots, so nothing depends on remembering where a button sits. Features are called by their current names, prices and money never appear, sizes and limits needed for an answer are stated in the question, and people in the scenarios have names from many backgrounds. Every question is checked to have one defensible answer under current product behavior.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
Scenario questions on running servers and services on DigitalOcean at an intermediate level. They cover creating, sizing and recovering Droplets; private networks, Cloud Firewalls, DNS and load balancers; block volumes, Spaces object storage and managed databases; and metrics, alert policies and uptime checks. Many questions show a small table, such as a firewall's rules, a list of Droplets or a run of metric readings, and ask what happens or what to do next.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen
What does the DigitalOcean test measure?+
It measures hands-on knowledge through scenarios about creating, sizing and recovering Droplets; private networks, Cloud Firewalls, DNS and load balancers; block volumes, Spaces and managed databases; and monitoring.
Who should use the DigitalOcean test?+
It is designed for intermediate hiring of cloud and infrastructure engineers, DevOps and site reliability engineers, system administrators, and solutions architects who build or run services on DigitalOcean.
What is the DigitalOcean test format and timing?+
Candidates answer 15 multiple-choice questions in 10 minutes, in English. They cannot go back to earlier questions. A separate practice set has 4 questions and takes 4 minutes.
How should I interpret a DigitalOcean test score?+
Treat it as evidence to review, not a hiring decision. Compare it with a relevant work sample and structured interview, and discuss the candidate’s reasoning on topics like Droplet recovery or alert policies.
