The short answer
Interview Coder is a desktop app that, in its own words, is "designed to help job seekers ace technical interviews by providing real-time assistance with coding questions". For employers hiring developers, the most reliable response is not a single detection tool but interview formats that need the candidate’s own understanding: explaining code, making a small change to it, debugging a short function and talking through trade-offs.
What Interview Coder is
What is Interview Coder? On its homepage, checked on 2026-10-02, it describes itself as "a desktop app designed to help job seekers ace technical interviews by providing real-time assistance with coding questions". It markets itself as "The No. 1 Undetectable AI For Interviews" and says that "even if the session is recorded, InterviewCoder leaves no visible windows or overlays". It lists video meeting tools and coding platforms it says it works with, and interview types from system design and full stack to data analysis and product management. Its homepage lists a free download without AI features and paid Pro plans.
These are the vendor's own marketing claims, quoted and dated. We have not tested them, and we do not describe how to install, configure or conceal the app. For employers, the point is simple: a candidate in a remote coding interview may have suggested solutions on screen that you cannot see.
Why coding interviews are a target
Coding interviews are unusually exposed to AI help for three reasons. First, many use well-known problem types, such as array manipulation or classic algorithms, that AI models solve easily. Second, the answer is text that can be read from one window and typed into another. Third, the format often rewards a correct final answer more than the reasoning behind it.
That is why coding interview cheating gets so much attention, and why tools such as Interview Coder focus on it. Searches for interview coder alternatives show that several similar products exist; for employers, the names matter less than the shared weakness they exploit. A process that asks candidates to explain, change and debug their own work is resistant to all of them at once.
What coding-assessment vendors document
Is Interview Coder detectable? Claims about detection should come from the assessment vendors themselves, and they differ.
HackerRank. Its support article on Desktop App Mode says the app "detects and closes any other programs that candidates try to open during the test, including invisible cheating tools such as Cluely and Ultracode". In a blog post from March 2025, HackerRank reported its own test against InterviewCoder: it says its AI plagiarism detection flagged the test candidate on all three questions, session replay captured screenshots of external tool use, and interviewers noted the candidate's inability to debug or explain solutions. It also noted that on Windows the tool was not visible in screen sharing. This is HackerRank's own test of its own product, so treat it as a vendor report.
CodeSignal. Its cheating and fraud page describes a Suspicion Score that analyses solution similarity, telemetry and copy-paste activity to identify "patterns that may indicate AI-assisted behavior", plus AI proctoring and identity verification. So can CodeSignal detect Interview Coder? It does not name the tool on that page; ask CodeSignal what its Suspicion Score catches.
Codility. Its pricing page lists plagiarism detection and core integrity signals on all plans, and a desktop app on its custom plan to detect unauthorised applications.
CoderPad. Its homepage describes suspicious-behaviour alerts, playback reports and interviews where AI assistants run inside the platform with prompts captured for review.
Assessment formats that hold up
The formats below rely on understanding rather than on producing a correct answer, which makes suggested solutions much less useful.
Pair programming on a small change. Give the candidate a short piece of working code and ask them to add one feature or handle one edge case, talking as they go. The interesting part is how they read the existing code, not the final diff.
Code reading and explanation. Show a short function and ask what it does, what it prints or where it would fail. The practice questions below show the style. Our technical skills tests use short code-reading items in Python, SQL and JavaScript.
Debugging a short function. Hand over code with one realistic bug and ask the candidate to find and fix it, explaining how they narrowed it down.
Explain-your-answer follow-ups. After any coding task, ask why they chose that approach, what its weaknesses are and how they would test it. HackerRank's own report noted that the candidate using an AI tool could not debug or explain the solutions, which is exactly what these follow-ups expose.
A 45-minute remote coding interview that holds up
Here is one structure a small team can use for a junior or mid-level developer, after a short timed screening test.
Minutes 0 to 10: their test, explained. Pick two items from the candidate's screening test and ask them to explain their answers. Someone who reasoned through the questions can do this easily.
Minutes 10 to 25: a small change to working code. Share a short, working function from a codebase like yours and ask for one new behaviour, with the candidate talking as they go.
Minutes 25 to 35: one bug. Share a function with a single realistic bug and ask them to find, explain and fix it.
Minutes 35 to 45: trade-offs and questions. Ask what they would test, what could break at scale and what they would do differently with more time, then answer their questions. Score each part against a rubric agreed before the interview.
A fair policy for AI tools in technical hiring
Many developers use AI coding assistants at work, and banning them everywhere in hiring can test something the job does not need. A fairer policy separates two questions.
Can the candidate understand and reason about code on their own? Test this with short, timed code-reading items and live explanation, with AI not allowed, and say so clearly.
Can the candidate use AI well? If the job uses AI assistants, consider a work sample where AI is allowed and disclosed, then score judgement: how they checked the output, what they changed and why. CoderPad's homepage describes this kind of setup, with AI prompts captured for review.
Write the rules into the invitation for each stage, and apply them consistently. A candidate who uses an assistant openly when it is allowed is doing exactly what you asked.
Red flags and false positives
Some patterns may suggest outside help in a coding interview: a correct solution typed quickly with no exploration, long pauses followed by complete code, difficulty explaining a line they just wrote, or an inability to make a small change to their own solution.
Every one of these has innocent explanations. Experienced developers may recognise a familiar problem and type the answer quickly. Nervous candidates freeze. People thinking in a second language may pause before speaking. Some candidates use screen readers or other assistive technology. Treat patterns as prompts for a follow-up question, never as proof, and apply the same approach to every candidate. The integrity overview explains how HireValid presents signals for review.
Reading interview coder reviews written by its users will not help you here; what matters is whether your own process gives candidates a fair chance to show what they can do.
How HireValid’s technical tests are designed
HireValid's technical tests, Python fundamentals, SQL fundamentals and JavaScript fundamentals, use short code-reading and query-reading items under a time limit, with questions drawn from randomised pools. Each item asks what code does or where it fails, which rewards understanding rather than recall of a known solution.
Results include an Integrity Score built from signals such as tab switches, paste events and unusual timing, for a person to review; HireValid does not claim to detect Interview Coder or any specific app. The junior developer bundle combines these tests with reasoning, and the employer's guide to AI interview cheating tools covers the wider process.

Frequently asked questions
What does Interview Coder do, according to its makers?+
Interview Coder describes itself on its homepage as a desktop app designed to help job seekers in technical interviews by providing real-time assistance with coding questions. It markets itself as hard to detect. Those are its own claims; employers should focus on interview formats that need the candidate’s own understanding.
Is Interview Coder detectable?+
Not reliably by any single method. Some vendors document relevant controls: HackerRank says its Desktop App Mode closes other programs during tests, and reported in March 2025 that its plagiarism detection flagged InterviewCoder in its own test. Live explanation and debugging tasks remain the most dependable check.
Can CodeSignal detect Interview Coder?+
CodeSignal does not name Interview Coder on its cheating and fraud page. It describes a Suspicion Score that looks for patterns that may indicate AI-assisted behaviour, plus AI proctoring and identity verification. Ask CodeSignal what those features catch in your setup.
Should developers be allowed to use AI in technical interviews?+
It depends on the stage and the job. Many teams test independent code reading with AI not allowed, then run a work sample where AI is allowed and disclosed, scoring how the candidate checks and adapts the output. State the rule for each stage in advance.
What interview formats are hardest to cheat with AI?+
Formats that need the candidate’s own reasoning: explaining a short piece of code, making a small change to working code while talking, debugging a function with one bug, and follow-up questions on why they chose an approach. A suggested solution helps little with any of these.
Is fast, correct code a sign of cheating?+
Not on its own. Experienced developers often recognise a familiar problem and solve it quickly. Ask them to explain the solution, handle a new edge case or change one requirement; genuine understanding shows quickly, and the same follow-up should apply to every candidate.
Does HireValid detect Interview Coder?+
HireValid does not claim to detect any specific app. Its technical tests are short, timed code-reading items from randomised pools, and integrity signals such as tab switches, paste events and unusual timing feed an Integrity Score for human review, never an automatic rejection.
