Het korte antwoord

The Spring assessment is a 10-minute, 15-question check of working knowledge of Spring for Java. Candidates read brief Java snippets and settings, then choose what the code does, why it fails, or which change fixes it. It covers the core container and web layer, Spring Data, Spring Security, and Spring Boot for mid-level Java developers and software engineers.

Wat het meet

Working knowledge of Spring for Java: the core container and web layer, Spring Data, Spring Security and Spring Boot.

Core container and web layer

Questions cover dependency injection and web controllers in Spring applications.

Data access with Spring Data

Questions cover data access with Spring Data and JPA.

Spring Security

Candidates read Spring Security code and settings and decide what they do, why they fail or which change fixes them.

Spring Boot configuration

Questions cover how Spring Boot configures an application.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Java developers and software engineers who build or maintain Spring and Spring Boot applications, such as backend, API and full-stack developers at mid level.

A focused check of Spring knowledge

  1. Look beyond resume claims

Candidates interpret brief Java snippets and settings, showing how they reason about Spring code.

  2. Cover four relevant areas

Check dependency injection and web controllers, Spring Data and JPA, Spring Security, and Spring Boot configuration.

  3. Keep the initial screen brief

The 15-question assessment takes 10 minutes, offering a short check for backend, API, and full-stack developers.

  4. Focus follow-up conversations

Use the results to choose what to explore in a work sample and structured interview.

Assessment integrity signals

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools; question order and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, and candidates cannot go back. Timing runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be copied or selected; a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline summarize signals for employer review; they never decide on their own. Each personal invitation link expires, and a finished test cannot be taken again. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as evidence

Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not as a pass mark or a hiring decision on its own. Pair it with a work sample involving a Spring change, then use a structured interview to explore the candidate's reasoning. Read our pre-employment testing guide and how we build our tests. For a full-stack role, compare the Angular test.

Explore their Spring reasoning

  1. A controller needs to save an order and return a response. How would you approach the change?

Listen for reasoning about dependency injection and web controllers, not a memorized definition.

  2. A data access change returns an unexpected result. How would you investigate it?

Listen for a clear approach to Spring Data and JPA.

  3. How would you reason through access requirements for an application endpoint?

Listen for relevant Spring Security considerations and an explanation of the choices.

  4. An application behaves differently after a configuration change. How would you trace the cause?

Listen for a methodical explanation of Spring Boot configuration.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral business examples such as orders, bookings and stock, with names from many backgrounds and no idioms or local knowledge. Each question states the versions and setup it assumes, so the answer never depends on guessing a project's defaults, and no question asks for build-tool syntax or exact class-name recall. Code is short and plainly formatted so the test measures Spring knowledge rather than reading speed.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: how consistent the scores are will be reported once 200 candidates have completed the test.
