Roles this test fits

Roles that analyze or manage data in shared spreadsheets: data and business analysts, finance and accounting staff, sales and marketing teams, HR teams, IT staff, operations and administration roles.

What the Google Sheets test shows that a resume does not

  1. Formulas they can read

Questions show a small sheet and ask what a math, statistics, text, logic or lookup formula returns, which a line on a resume cannot show.

  2. Summaries people can trust

Pivot table and chart questions show whether a candidate picks a summary that answers the question asked.

  3. Care with shared data

Sorting, filtering and protecting data matter most when several people work in one sheet. The test shows whether a candidate keeps shared data organized and clean.

How the Google Sheets test resists AI help

Each candidate gets a different set of questions drawn from large pools, with question order and answer options shuffled. Questions arrive one at a time from the server, candidates cannot go back to an earlier question, and the answer keys never reach the browser.

Question text cannot be copied, and a blocked copy is recorded. Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast answers are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review. The score never decides anything about the candidate.

Use the score with a work sample and a structured interview

Read the result as evidence, never on its own, and look at the four sub-skill results as well as the total. For a hands-on check, give shortlisted candidates a short task in a shared sheet: a tracker with a few messy rows, a question that needs a summary or chart, and a range that other people should not be able to edit. Keep it to about 15 minutes so it mirrors the job without becoming unpaid work. Then ask every candidate the same questions in a structured interview.

Interview questions to ask after the Google Sheets test

  1. Several people edit the same sheet. How do you keep the data clean?

Listen for protecting ranges that should not change, keeping one current version and agreeing how new rows are added.

  2. A manager asks for totals by month from a large sheet. How would you build it?

Listen for a pivot table or formulas that update when data changes, and a check that the totals match the source.

  3. Tell me about a chart you made for someone else. Why did you choose that chart?

Strong answers start from the question the reader needed answered, not from the chart type.

Fairness and accommodations

Sheets use everyday business data with no money symbols, dates written with the month as a word, and functions as they work in current Google Sheets with the United States locale. Each question shows the sheet or chart it asks about and states any menu action in words, so nothing depends on remembering a particular screen. The test asks for a computer so the sheets are large enough to read.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

Short questions on everyday Google Sheets work at an intermediate level: math and statistics formulas; text, logic and lookup formulas; pivot tables and charts; and keeping shared data organized and clean. Most questions show a small sheet or chart and ask what a formula returns, what an action does to the data, or which approach fits the task.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

What is on the Google Sheets test?+

Fifteen single-choice and multiple-select questions in 10 minutes on four areas: math and statistics formulas; text, logic and lookup formulas; tables and charts, including pivot tables; and sorting, filtering and protecting data. Most questions show a small sheet or chart and ask what a formula returns, what an action does or which approach fits the task.

Can someone who knows Excel do well on the Google Sheets test?+

Often, because many everyday formulas work in a similar way in both tools. The test uses functions as they work in current Google Sheets with the United States locale, and it states any menu action in words, so nothing depends on remembering a particular screen.

Does the Google Sheets test cover Google Docs, Gmail or Calendar?+

No. It is a test of spreadsheet work in Google Sheets. If the role depends on documents or email, the test library holds separate tests such as Google Docs and Email with Gmail, which you can add to the same assessment.

Can candidates take the Google Sheets test on a phone?+

No. The test asks for a computer so the sheets are large enough to read. Say so in the invitation, and offer another arrangement to any candidate without access to a desktop or laptop.
