Het korte antwoord
This data entry typing test gives candidates three short business passages to type in 5 minutes on a computer keyboard. The result combines speed in words per minute, against a target of 50, with accuracy, the share of characters typed correctly. It suits data entry, administration, chat and email support, and reception roles.
Wat het meet
Typing speed and accuracy on short business passages.
Typing speed and accuracy
Covers how quickly a candidate types short business passages and how many characters they enter correctly.
Question formats
Typing
The candidate: Types a passage or a set of figures as quickly and accurately as they can.
You see: Speed together with accuracy, so fast but careless typing does not score well.
3 questions in 5 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Roles with a lot of typing: data entry, administration, customer support by chat and email, reception and office roles.
What the typing test shows that a resume does not
Real keyboard speed
"Fast typist" on a resume is a claim. The test measures words per minute from the candidate's own keystrokes on short business passages.
Accuracy next to speed
Accuracy is the share of characters typed correctly, so you see whether a fast pace comes with errors someone will have to fix later.
Comparable conditions
Every candidate types plain business English on a computer keyboard under the same time limit, so results can be read side by side.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the typing test resists shortcuts
Typing is hard to hand to an AI tool: the candidate has to type the passage themselves within the time limit. Speed and accuracy are measured from the candidate's own keystrokes, and pasted or instantly appearing text is recorded.
Each candidate gets different passages drawn from large pools. Timing runs on the server, so a reload brings back the same passage with only the time that was left, and there is no going back to an earlier passage. Each invitation link is personal and expires.
Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast input are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review; it never decides on its own. With the candidate's consent, the employer can add webcam photos.

How to read typing test results
The result brings together two things: words per minute and accuracy. Read them together. A high speed with low accuracy means corrections later; a slightly lower speed with high accuracy is often the better result for the work. Treat small differences between candidates as noise rather than a reason to prefer one over another.
The score is evidence, never the decision. For support roles, add a short realistic work sample: a chat transcript to summarize into a case note, or a customer email to answer. That shows speed and accuracy in context, alongside judgment and tone. Then use a structured interview to ask every candidate the same questions about how they check their work.
Interview questions to follow the typing test
How do you check a message or a note before you send it?
Listen for a concrete habit, such as rereading names, numbers and references, rather than "I am careful".
What do you do when you notice an error after something has been sent or saved?
Listen for fixing it promptly, telling whoever relies on it, and checking for the same slip elsewhere.
Tell me about a time you had a lot of typing to get through in a short time.
Listen for how they kept accuracy up under time pressure and what they did to stay organized.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Who should use this typing test for employment?
Use the typing speed and accuracy test for jobs with a lot of keyboard work: data entry and administration, customer support by chat and email, and reception and office roles. It fits data entry clerk, customer support agent, receptionist and office administrator hiring.
It is a short employment typing test: three short business passages in 5 minutes, with words per minute and accuracy reported together. The passages use plain business English with common words and only characters found on a standard keyboard, with no names or codes, so candidates need no special knowledge.
The test needs a computer keyboard, and candidates are told before they start that it cannot be taken on a phone. That keeps results comparable between candidates. If someone does not have access to a computer, talk to them about an alternative rather than leaving them out. At 5 minutes, the test also keeps the process candidate-friendly.
What is a good typing speed for a job?
There is no single good typing speed for a job. It depends on how much of the role is typing and how much accuracy matters. A live chat agent typing replies all day works at a different pace from an administrator who types a few emails between other tasks.
The test scores speed against a target of 50 words per minute, which is how the score is calculated, not a requirement for any role. To understand what a result means for your role, look at the real work: how much text the job involves, and what an error costs. Time a few experienced people doing the actual task, such as writing a case note, and you will know whether a candidate's pace is likely to be a limit in practice.
Weigh accuracy alongside speed. Fast entry that creates errors in customer references costs more than it saves, because someone has to find and fix each mistake. For many roles a steady, accurate typist is the better hire than a fast, careless one, and the work sample and interview are where you confirm it.
Typing test for job applicants: text or numbers?
Data entry work comes in two kinds. Some roles type text, such as notes, addresses, messages and summaries, where words per minute and accuracy on prose are what matter. Others mostly key in figures, where a single wrong digit matters more than overall pace.
This test measures the text side: typing on short business passages. For roles that mostly key in figures, look at the numeric keypad entry tests in the test library, which measure number entry on its own, and give more weight to accuracy.
A typing speed test for jobs is most useful when it reflects the actual input. Describe the kind of text the role types in the invitation, so candidates know what to expect, and use a work sample from your own system for the candidates you are considering. Tell candidates in advance about any tools or adjustments they may use, so everyone works under the same conditions.
Fairness and accommodations
Passages use plain business English with common words and only characters found on a standard keyboard, with no names or codes. The test needs a computer keyboard, so candidates are told before they start that it cannot be taken on a phone.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Veelgestelde vragen
How does the typing speed and accuracy test work?+
The candidate types three short business passages shown on screen, within 5 minutes in all, on a computer keyboard. The result combines speed in words per minute with accuracy, the share of characters typed correctly, so you see both pace and care. There is no going back to an earlier passage.
Is there a minimum words per minute on the typing test?+
No. The test scores speed against a target of 50 words per minute, which is part of how the score is calculated, not a requirement. What pace a role needs depends on the work. Read the speed and accuracy together, alongside a work sample and an interview, and keep the decision with the people hiring.
Can candidates take the typing test on a phone?+
No. The typing speed and accuracy test needs a computer keyboard, and candidates are told before they start that it cannot be taken on a phone. That keeps results comparable between candidates. If a candidate has no access to a computer, talk to them about an alternative.
How is accuracy measured on the typing test?+
Accuracy is the share of characters typed correctly compared with the passage on screen. It is reported next to words per minute rather than hidden inside it, so you can see whether a candidate trades care for speed. For roles that handle references or customer details, give accuracy at least as much weight as speed.
Can candidates practice for the typing test?+
Yes. Regular typing practice on plain business text, the kind of passage the test uses, helps most. Before the timed passages, candidates get a practice set of 4 in 5 minutes, so the format is familiar when the scored part starts. The passages use common words and only characters found on a standard keyboard, with no names or codes.
Is the typing test fair to candidates with disabilities?+
It can be, with the right adjustments. Make it easy to ask for an accommodation before the test starts, such as extra time where speed is not essential to the job. If the role does not truly depend on typing speed, give the result little weight or leave the test out of the assessment.
