The short answer

This intermediate Firebase test checks practical mobile and web app development through short code and security-rule questions. It measures signing users in, protecting Cloud Firestore data, server-side logic with Cloud Functions for Firebase, and notifications with Firebase Cloud Messaging. Use it for mid-level developers and technical leads who build or maintain Firebase apps.

What it measures

Working knowledge of Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore and its security rules, Cloud Functions for Firebase and Firebase Cloud Messaging, read from short code.

Authentication

Questions cover signing users in and managing their identity with Firebase Authentication.

Firestore data and security rules

Questions assess modeling and protecting data in Cloud Firestore, including its security rules.

Cloud Functions

Questions cover writing server-side logic with Cloud Functions for Firebase.

Cloud Messaging

Questions assess sending notifications with Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Web and mobile developers, backend and full-stack engineers, and technical leads who build or maintain apps on Firebase, at a mid level.

What this Firebase test can show

  1. Code interpretation

Short code snippets and security rules reveal how candidates reason about what Firebase code does, why it fails, and which change may fix it.

  2. Data access reasoning

Questions about Cloud Firestore data and security rules give you evidence of how a candidate approaches protecting app data.

  3. Fairer app scenarios

Neutral task list, shop, chat, and booking scenarios use simple English and short, plainly formatted code to keep the focus on Firebase skill.

How the test is delivered

Each candidate gets a different set of questions drawn from large question pools, in a different order, with answer options shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid can summarize signals, such as time away from the test tab or pastes into answers, in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for the employer to review. It never decides on its own.

Use the score as evidence

Review the score alongside a Firebase work sample and a structured interview. Ask the candidate to explain choices in their own project context, including how they would protect Cloud Firestore data or troubleshoot a notification flow. Treat the score as one signal for your review, not as a decision on its own. For related development screens, see Flutter and React Native. Structured interview questions

  1. A task list shows records from another account. How would you investigate and change the app?

Listen for a clear investigation of the Cloud Firestore data model and security rules, and an explanation of how the proposed change protects access.

  2. A Cloud Function fails after an app action. How would you trace the issue and decide what to change?

Listen for a step-by-step approach to understanding the server-side logic and diagnosing the failure, rather than a definition of Cloud Functions.

  3. A booking app needs to notify users about a status change. How would you plan that flow?

Listen for a practical account of where Firebase Cloud Messaging fits into the notification flow and how the candidate would investigate delivery problems.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral app scenarios such as task lists, shops, chat and bookings, with names from many backgrounds and no idioms or local knowledge. Code is kept short and plainly formatted, the English is kept simple so the test measures Firebase skill rather than reading speed, and questions avoid recently changed details that an otherwise skilled developer could not be expected to know.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A ten-minute check of practical Firebase development across four areas: signing users in and managing their identity, modeling and protecting data in Cloud Firestore, writing server-side logic with Cloud Functions for Firebase, and sending notifications with Firebase Cloud Messaging. Many questions show a short snippet of code or a security rule and ask what it does, why it fails, or which change fixes it.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Frequently asked questions

What practice is available for the Firebase test?+

Candidates can try a practice set of 4 questions with a 4-minute limit. It gives them a chance to see the test experience before the 10-minute Firebase assessment, which contains 15 multiple-choice questions.

How does the Firebase test account for fairness?+

Questions use neutral app scenarios, such as task lists, shops, chat, and bookings, with names from many backgrounds and no idioms or local knowledge. Code is short and plainly formatted, and simple English keeps the focus on Firebase skill rather than reading speed.

Are aids allowed during the Firebase test?+

No aids are listed as allowed for this test. Its multiple-choice questions use short code snippets or security rules to assess how candidates understand Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions for Firebase, and Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Which candidates should take the Firebase test?+

It is designed for mid-level web and mobile developers, backend and full-stack engineers, and technical leads who build or maintain apps on Firebase. It checks intermediate practical skills across identity, data security, server-side logic, and notifications.
