The short answer
The GD&T test is a timed, intermediate hiring assessment for engineers, drafters and quality inspectors who work with mechanical drawings. It measures how candidates read symbols and modifiers, datum reference frames, and geometric tolerance types and zones. Multiple-choice questions use feature control frames, size limits and measured values to check applied drawing interpretation.
What it measures
Reading GD&T callouts: symbols and modifiers, datum reference frames, and the kinds of geometric tolerance and their zones.
Fundamentals and symbols
Questions check how candidates interpret GD&T symbols and modifiers in callouts, including what a feature control frame means.
Datum referencing
Candidates consider how datum references establish a frame for holding and interpreting a part.
Geometric tolerance types
Questions distinguish geometric tolerance types and their zones, including which tolerance applies and how much is available.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Mechanical, aerospace, product development and manufacturing engineers, mechanical design and CAD engineers, drafters, quality inspectors, and electrical engineers who work with mechanical drawings.
A focused check of drawing interpretation
See application, not just familiarity
A resume can list drawing experience, but it does not show how a candidate reads a feature control frame in context. This assessment asks candidates to interpret short situations, tables or statements and choose the right answer, or every right answer.
Check the details that matter in a drawing
The questions cover symbols and modifiers, datum reference frames, geometric tolerance types and tolerance zones. Candidates also work with feature control frames, size limits and measured values to explain what a callout means and how much tolerance is available.
Give the interview a specific starting point
Use the result to decide which drawing topics to explore further in a work sample or structured interview. It can help focus follow-up on a candidate’s interpretation of datums or tolerance zones, rather than relying only on a general account of experience.
Keep the assessment compact
The test has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. A four-question practice set takes four minutes. That gives hiring teams a defined, short assessment to consider alongside other evidence, not a replacement for reviewing relevant work.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
An assessment with integrity signals for review
Each candidate receives a different set of questions drawn from large question pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The GD&T test is timed on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Each invitation link is personal and expires, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid can summarize signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. The employer reviews those signals; the system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.
How we prevent AI cheating · Integrity signals
Treat the score as evidence to review
Use the score as one input, not as a pass mark or a decision by itself. Review it alongside a relevant work sample and a structured interview. For example, ask the candidate to interpret a generic drawing or callout relevant to the role, then invite them to explain how they reached their conclusion. Compare that explanation with the assessment areas: symbols and modifiers, datum references, or tolerance types and zones. Look for clear reasoning and a sound connection between the drawing information and the answer, while making room to check any area the test does not cover. Keep the same job-related prompts and evaluation approach for candidates applying to the same role. For a broader engineering context, you could pair the result with the Mechanical Reasoning test. For a role that also uses a CAD tool, consider the SolidWorks test. Neither a test score nor an integrity signal should determine the hiring decision alone.
Structured interview questions to explore
Tell me about a time you used a drawing callout to guide work on a part. How did you interpret it, and what did you do next?
Listen for a clear account of reading the callout in context, checking the relevant drawing information and explaining how it informed the candidate’s actions.
Describe a situation where datum references affected how you evaluated or communicated a part requirement.
Listen for a specific explanation of the datum reference frame and how the candidate connected it to the part or inspection task, rather than a memorized definition.
Walk me through how you would investigate a difference between a measured value and a geometric tolerance on a drawing.
Listen for a step-by-step approach that identifies the applicable callout, the tolerance type and its zone, and the information the candidate would check before drawing a conclusion.
When a drawing is unclear to someone working with the part, how would you explain the requirement and check that it is understood?
Listen for precise, job-relevant communication that uses the drawing details, clarifies the intended interpretation and invites the other person to confirm their understanding.

Who this intermediate test is for
This assessment is intended for intermediate hiring involving mechanical, aerospace, product development and manufacturing engineers; mechanical design and CAD engineers; drafters; quality inspectors; and electrical engineers who work with mechanical drawings. A GD&T skills test can give you a focused view of how candidates in these roles interpret drawing information. It is not a general engineering assessment, and it does not cover every skill needed for any of these jobs. Match it to the responsibilities in your role description and use other job-relevant evidence for the rest. If you are building a broader hiring process, see the pre-employment testing guide and candidate-friendly hiring guide.
What candidates see in the questions
Questions use multiple choice. A candidate reads a short situation, table or statement, then picks the right answer or every right answer. The content includes feature control frames, size limits and measured values. Candidates are asked what a callout means, how datums hold a part, and which geometric tolerance applies and how much of it is available. The test follows ASME Y14.5-2018 terminology and uses generic brackets, plates, shafts and housings. Characteristic names appear in words beside symbols, all sizes are in millimeters, and the arithmetic is simple enough for scratch paper. Those design choices keep questions focused on interpreting the drawing information rather than recognizing a rendered symbol or relying on local practice.
Pair it with role-specific evidence
For a mechanical drawing role, use this assessment to inform a work sample and follow-up conversation about callouts, datum referencing and tolerance zones. It does not replace reviewing a candidate’s relevant work or checking the other requirements of the job. Browse the test library to consider other assessments that match the role. HireValid reports reliability for this test as provisional; reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Fairness and accommodations
Questions use the terms and symbols of ASME Y14.5-2018 only, with every characteristic named in words beside its symbol so no question depends on how a symbol renders. All sizes are in millimeters, the arithmetic is simple enough for scratch paper, and the parts are generic brackets, plates, shafts and housings with no brand, industry jargon or local practice beyond what the standard defines.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
