The short answer

The Strategic Coaching test uses short workplace scenarios to show how candidates respond in coaching situations. It measures judgment in setting up a coaching relationship, running a conversation, developing people and sustaining progress. It is designed for hiring people managers, team leads, HR partners, learning and development staff, and internal coaches.

What it measures

Judgment in workplace coaching: setting up coaching, running a coaching conversation, developing people and sustaining their progress.

Setting up a coaching relationship

Candidates choose a response for a first coaching meeting that sets up the coaching relationship.

Running a coaching conversation

Candidates select a coaching response to a workplace discussion that has become stuck.

Developing people through coaching

Candidates consider how a coaching response can help someone develop through their own work.

Sustaining progress over time

Candidates respond to a stalled plan and consider how progress can continue over time.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

People managers, team leads, HR business partners, people and culture specialists, learning and development staff, and internal coaches.

What this test can show

  1. Judgment in realistic moments

Brief situations such as a first coaching meeting or a stuck conversation reveal how candidates choose a response, not just how they describe their experience on a resume.

  2. Support for development

The scenarios show how a candidate helps someone think through their own work, grow, and keep going while staying healthy and engaged.

  3. Plain-language scenarios

Situations avoid coaching-school jargon, trademarked models, idioms, and stereotyped roles, keeping attention on coaching judgment rather than reading speed.

Test integrity features

Candidates receive different question sets from large pools, with question order and answer options shuffled for each attempt. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading brings back the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be selected or copied, and a blocked copy attempt appears in the timeline. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for the employer to review. It does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, employers can add webcam photos at random moments. Learn more about how we build our tests.

Use the score as evidence

Treat the result as one piece of evidence for a person to review, never as a decision by itself. Pair it with a work sample: present a stalled coaching plan and ask the candidate to explain a response and how they would support continued progress. Then use the same structured interview questions for each candidate. The Leadership and People Management and Business Judgment tests offer related perspectives. See the pre-employment testing guide for broader hiring context.

Structured interview questions

  1. Tell me about a time a coaching conversation became stuck. What did you do next?

Listen for a specific response, attention to the other person’s thinking, and a clear account of what followed.

  2. Describe how you would approach a first coaching meeting with someone who is unsure what to discuss.

Listen for how the candidate would set up the relationship and help the person think through their work.

  3. Tell me about a time you used coaching to support someone’s development.

Listen for the person’s own role in their growth and the candidate’s coaching response.

  4. How have you responded when a person’s plan stopped making progress?

Listen for how the candidate would help sustain progress while considering the person’s engagement.

Fairness and accommodations

Scenarios use general workplace situations from many kinds of organizations, with no jargon from any one coaching school, no trademarked models, and no idioms, sports or local customs. Names, ages and backgrounds of the people in each scenario vary, and no one is shown in a stereotyped role. Each question is kept short and in plain language, so the test measures coaching judgment rather than reading speed.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Each question describes a brief workplace situation, such as a first coaching meeting, a stuck conversation or a stalled plan, and asks for the best coaching response. It shows how well a candidate helps others think through their own work, grow and keep going, while staying healthy and engaged.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 3 minutes, before the timed test.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Strategic Coaching test keep its scenarios fair?+

The scenarios draw on general workplace situations rather than one kind of organization. They avoid coaching-school jargon, trademarked models, idioms, sports references, and local customs. Names, ages, and backgrounds vary, and people are not shown in stereotyped roles. Questions use short, plain language to focus on coaching judgment rather than reading speed.

Can candidates use aids or return to an earlier Strategic Coaching test question?+

Aids are not allowed, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question once it is answered. The test is not desktop only, so candidates can take it on a phone or a computer.

Is there a practice set before the Strategic Coaching test?+

Yes. Candidates can try four practice questions in three minutes before the timed test, so the format is familiar before the 15 scored questions begin. Some questions ask for the single best coaching response and others for every response that fits the situation.

Which roles suit the Strategic Coaching test?+

It is intended for intermediate-level hiring for people managers, team leads, HR business partners, people and culture specialists, learning and development staff, and internal coaches. Choose it when coaching judgment is relevant to the role, rather than using it as a general measure for unrelated positions.
