Het korte antwoord

The Express.js test is a 15-question, 10-minute multiple-choice check for intermediate back-end, full-stack, and Node.js developers. Candidates read short code snippets and work out server setup, middleware, routes, request data, responses, and errors. Use it as evidence of practical Express.js knowledge for web services and APIs, alongside other hiring evidence.

Wat het meet

Setting up Express.js servers and middleware, routing requests, reading request data, and sending responses and errors.

Server setup and middleware

Covers setting up an Express.js server and using middleware.

Routing

Checks how a server selects the route that answers a request.

Handling requests

Covers reading request data from the request object.

Responses and errors

Checks what response a server sends, including when something fails.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Back-end, full-stack and Node.js developers who build or maintain web services and APIs with Express.js, at a working, mid-level standard.

  1. Read server behavior from code

Candidates interpret small Express.js snippets and decide what a server does, giving you evidence beyond a resume's description of server-side experience.

  2. Failure paths, not just the happy path

Questions ask what response goes back when something fails, which shows whether a candidate can predict how an Express.js server answers a request that goes wrong.

  3. Use questions grounded in everyday work

The test avoids rare API corners and release-history trivia. Where behavior differs between major versions, the question states the version.

Test integrity signals for review

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser shows one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline summarize signals for employer review; neither decides on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments. Read how we build our tests.

Review the score with other evidence

Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not as a hiring decision. Compare it with a work sample in which the candidate explains what an Express.js server would do with a request and response. Then use a structured interview to explore their reasoning and relevant work. For a related view of server-side skills, see the Node.js test and Django test.

Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken

  1. Tell me about an Express.js API you built or maintained. How did you organize its routes and middleware, and why?

Listen for concrete choices about route structure and middleware order, and the reasons behind them.

  2. Imagine a request is not getting the response you expect. How would you use the code to investigate what is happening?

Listen for a practical explanation that considers request data, the route, and the response or error.

  3. Tell me about a server-side task where you had to set up Express.js middleware. How did you reason through the setup?

Listen for a concrete account of the task and how they approached the server and middleware behavior.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions are about everyday Express.js behavior a working developer meets, not rare corners of the API or trivia about release history. Code is short, uses plain names for users, orders and products drawn from many backgrounds, and avoids idioms and local knowledge. Where behavior differs between major versions, the question says which version it means, and every question has one answer that can be worked out from the code shown.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, timed check of practical Express.js knowledge for server-side work in Node.js. Candidates read small code snippets and decide what a server does: how it is set up, which route answers a request, what the request object holds and what response goes back, including when something fails.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen

Who should take the Express.js test?+

It is intended for back-end, full-stack and Node.js developers who build or maintain web services and APIs with Express.js. It is set at a working, mid-level standard, so it suits developers who already use the framework day to day.

How are Express.js test questions designed?+

Questions focus on everyday Express.js behavior rather than rare API corners or release-history trivia. They use short code, plain names for users, orders, and products, and state the version when behavior differs between major versions.

Can candidates use outside aids on the Express.js test?+

No aids are allowed. Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back, and every one has a single answer that can be worked out from the code shown on the screen.

What practice is available for the Express.js test?+

Candidates can try a separate practice set of four questions in about four minutes. It previews the format of the hiring test, which has 15 questions in 10 minutes, each built around a short code snippet.
