Het korte antwoord
The Node.js assessment is a 10-minute, multiple-choice screen for back-end and full-stack developers, API developers, and intermediate engineers moving into Node.js roles. It checks how candidates reason about asynchronous runtime behavior, project setup and production, application structure, and HTTP API development through short code samples and configuration files.
Wat het meet
Working Node.js knowledge: asynchronous runtime behavior, project setup and production, application design, and HTTP API development.
Runtime and asynchronous code
Checks how the runtime schedules asynchronous work and what short code samples do.
Project setup and production
Covers setting up a Node.js project and running it in production.
Architecture and design patterns
Looks at how an application is structured and how design choices affect it.
Building HTTP APIs
Covers writing HTTP APIs and reasoning about what API code does.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Back-end and full-stack developers who build services with Node.js, API developers, and engineers at an intermediate level moving into Node.js roles.
What this screen can show
Look beyond listed experience
A resume describes past work; this screen checks working knowledge of Node.js runtime behavior, project setup, application design, and HTTP APIs.
Use concrete prompts
Short code samples and configuration files ask candidates what the code does, what goes wrong, or which change fixes it.
Keep the first check brief
The 10-minute assessment gives you an initial signal before you decide how much time to spend on deeper review.
Focus on the role
Use it for back-end and full-stack developers, API developers, or intermediate engineers moving into Node.js work.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Test integrity signals
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order changes between attempts, and answer options are shuffled. The browser displays one question at a time, while answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back. Copying or selecting question text is blocked, and blocked copy attempts are recorded in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and unusually fast answers. Employers can review an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; the system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, random webcam photos can be added. See How we build our tests.

Use the result as evidence
Treat the result as one signal for a person to review, not as a hiring decision. Pair it with a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview about the candidate’s approach to Node.js code. Use the sample to explore practical choices in asynchronous work, project setup, application structure, or API development. For related technical screens, see Angular and SQL Coding: Querying, or browse the test library.
Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken
Walk me through how you would investigate an HTTP API endpoint that is not behaving as expected.
Listen for a clear way to inspect the code and reason about the endpoint, rather than a definition of an API.
Tell me about a Node.js project setup or production issue you worked through. How did you approach it?
Listen for concrete decisions related to project setup or running an application in production.
Describe how you would structure a Node.js application for a service with several responsibilities.
Listen for how the candidate explains application structure and design choices.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Questions test everyday Node.js work rather than recall of rare flags, version trivia or exact error text, and each code sample is short and stated against a named, currently supported Node.js release. Scenarios use neutral business settings with names from many backgrounds, plain US English and no idioms, money or local knowledge, so reading level and background do not decide the answer.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: no norms exist yet, and reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A ten-minute multiple-choice check of hands-on Node.js knowledge across four areas: how the runtime schedules asynchronous work, how a project is set up and run in production, how an application is structured, and how HTTP APIs are written. Most questions show a short code sample or configuration file and ask what it does, what goes wrong, or which change fixes it.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen
What does the Node.js assessment measure?+
It checks working knowledge of asynchronous runtime behavior, project setup and production, application design, and HTTP API development. Many questions use a short code sample or configuration file and ask what it does, what goes wrong, or which change fixes it.
How long is the Node.js assessment, and what is its format?+
The assessment has 15 multiple-choice questions and takes 10 minutes. It is in English. Candidates cannot return to earlier questions, and the browser presents one question at a time.
Which roles fit the Node.js assessment?+
It is intended for back-end and full-stack developers who build services with Node.js, API developers, and intermediate-level engineers moving into Node.js roles. Consider it for hiring where runtime, production setup, application design, and HTTP API knowledge are relevant.
Does the Node.js assessment rely on version trivia or memorized error messages?+
No. Questions test everyday Node.js work rather than recall of rare flags, version trivia or exact error text. Each code sample is short and stated against a named, currently supported Node.js release, and scenarios use neutral business settings in plain US English.
