Het korte antwoord

The AJAX test is a 10-minute, 15-question check for intermediate developers. Candidates read short JavaScript snippets and choose what they do, what goes wrong or how to fix them. It measures browser HTTP calls, promises and async functions, and using replies to update a page, for front-end, full-stack, JavaScript and web developer roles.

Wat het meet

Writing and reading browser code that sends HTTP calls in the background, handles their results and errors, and updates the page from the data.

HTTP calls from the browser

Covers browser code that sends background requests with fetch and XMLHttpRequest and handles results and errors.

Promises and async control flow

Covers promises and async functions used to manage the flow of browser requests and their replies.

Using fetched data in a live page

Covers using fetched data to update a live page correctly as replies arrive.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Front-end, full-stack, JavaScript and web developers, and other roles that build pages which load or send data without a full page reload.

A focused signal for browser-side work

  1. Look beyond resume claims

See how a candidate reads short JavaScript snippets about requests, replies, errors and page changes.

  2. Framework-neutral code

Snippets use standard browser features rather than one framework or one vendor’s browser, so a developer’s usual stack does not decide the result.

  3. Errors and timing, not only the happy path

Questions ask what goes wrong in a snippet and how to fix it, including keeping a page correct as replies arrive.

Test design and integrity signals

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order changes by attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, answered once and in order; answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. Each invitation link is personal and expires, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline are provided for employer review, not an automatic decision. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments. Read how we build our tests.

Use the score as evidence

Review the score alongside a work sample that asks the candidate to handle a background request and use its result on a page. Then use a structured interview to ask about their decisions. The score is one signal for a person to review, not a hiring decision. For nearby skills, compare the React test or Node.js test.

Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken

  1. A page needs to show new order data without reloading. How would you approach the request and update?

Listen for a clear sequence from sending the request to using its reply, and attention to keeping the page correct.

  2. A browser request fails after a user action. How would you investigate and decide what the page should do?

Listen for a practical way to handle errors and explain the page behavior to the user.

  3. Two requests return at different times. How would you keep their results from making the page inconsistent?

Listen for reasoning about async control flow and how arriving replies affect live page state.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions are short code snippets with plain English stems, written for standard browser features rather than one framework or one vendor's browser. Example data uses neutral subjects such as tasks, orders and products, with names from many backgrounds and no money symbols, idioms or local knowledge. Every candidate gets the same time per question, and code is kept short so reading speed matters less than understanding.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, timed check of how well a developer loads data in the background of a web page and puts it to use. Candidates read small JavaScript snippets and choose what they do, what goes wrong or how to fix them, covering fetch and XMLHttpRequest calls, promises and async functions, and keeping a page correct as replies arrive.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen

Does the AJAX test favor developers who use a particular framework?+

No. Questions are short code snippets with plain English stems, written for standard browser features such as fetch and XMLHttpRequest rather than one framework or one vendor’s browser. A developer who works mostly in one library still meets code they can read.

Which roles fit the AJAX test and its intermediate level?+

It is intended for front-end, full-stack, JavaScript and web developers, plus other roles that build pages which load or send data without a full page reload. Its intermediate level makes it a focused check of browser requests and updates for hiring into that kind of work.

How is the AJAX test designed to account for candidate differences?+

Example data uses neutral subjects such as tasks, orders and products, with names from many backgrounds and no money symbols, idioms or local knowledge. Every candidate gets the same time per question, and the code is kept short so understanding matters more than reading speed.

How long is the AJAX test, and can candidates use aids or go back?+

The test has 15 questions in 10 minutes. No aids are needed, and each question is answered once, in order, with no going back. A separate practice set of 4 questions in 4 minutes lets candidates see the snippet format first.
