Het korte antwoord
The ASP.NET skills test is a 10-minute assessment of working knowledge of ASP.NET and ASP.NET Core, including MVC, Web APIs, authentication and authorization, and SignalR. It is designed for intermediate back-end and full-stack .NET developers, ASP.NET web and API developers, and engineers moving older applications to ASP.NET Core.
Wat het meet
Working knowledge of ASP.NET and ASP.NET Core: MVC apps, Web APIs, authentication and authorization, and SignalR.
MVC and Razor applications
Candidates consider how controllers and Razor applications behave in short code snippets and work scenarios.
Web APIs and the request pipeline
Questions examine how endpoints and the request pipeline behave, including changes that fix a problem.
Authentication and authorization
Candidates reason through sign-in setup and how authentication and authorization affect an application.
Real-time apps with SignalR
Questions ask candidates to interpret how a SignalR hub behaves in a real-time application scenario.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Back-end and full-stack .NET developers, ASP.NET web and API developers, and engineers moving older ASP.NET applications to ASP.NET Core, at an intermediate level.

Look beyond the resume
See how candidates reason through MVC, API, sign-in, and SignalR scenarios instead of relying only on listed experience.
Useful for migration hires
Questions span classic ASP.NET and, mostly, ASP.NET Core, which helps when you hire engineers to move older ASP.NET applications to ASP.NET Core.
Review relevant details
Short C# snippets and scenarios show how candidates interpret framework behavior and select a fix.
Fair across releases
Each question states the framework version when behavior differs between versions, so a developer who works on another release is not marked down for it.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Review an attempt with context
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser presents one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be copied or selected; a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid summarizes signals, such as time away from the test tab and unusually fast answers, in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. It does not decide on its own. With the candidate’s consent, you can add webcam photos at random moments. Read how we build our tests for more about the test design.

Use the score as one piece of evidence
Review the score alongside a short work sample and a structured interview. For example, ask the candidate to reason through a small controller or endpoint scenario, then discuss their choices. Treat the result as evidence for your review, not a pass mark or a hiring decision. If the role also involves another stack, compare the Node.js test or Spring test with this ASP.NET assessment to choose a relevant screen.
Follow up on ASP.NET decisions
How would you investigate an endpoint that is not behaving as expected?
Listen for a clear approach to tracing the request through the endpoint and request pipeline, and for how the candidate would test a proposed change.
Tell me how you would approach a sign-in issue in an ASP.NET application.
Listen for how they distinguish authentication from authorization and how they would narrow down the setup causing the issue.
How would you decide what to change in a SignalR feature that is not behaving as intended?
Listen for a reasoned investigation of the hub behavior and a specific way to check whether the change addresses the scenario.

Fairness and accommodations
Questions are short code snippets and work scenarios written in plain US English, with neutral names for classes, routes and users and no idioms, money, sports or local knowledge. Each question states the framework version when behavior differs between versions, so candidates are not marked down for working on another release. Code is kept short and laid out the same way in every question so reading speed matters less than understanding.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A timed set of short questions on building web applications and services with ASP.NET, mostly ASP.NET Core. Candidates read small C# snippets and scenarios and decide how a controller, endpoint, sign-in setup or SignalR hub will behave, or which change fixes a problem. It covers MVC and Razor apps, Web APIs and the request pipeline, authentication and authorization, and real-time messaging.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen
What if a candidate works on a different ASP.NET version?+
Each question states the framework version when behavior differs between versions, so candidates are not marked down for working on another release. Most questions are about ASP.NET Core, with some on classic ASP.NET for teams that maintain older applications.
What accommodations or aids are allowed in the ASP.NET skills test?+
No aids are needed, and the test can be taken on a phone or a desktop computer. Candidates answer each question once, in order, without going back. Questions use plain US English, neutral names for classes, routes and users, and short code laid out the same way in every question.
Can candidates try the ASP.NET skills test before taking it?+
Yes. The practice set has 4 questions and takes 4 minutes. It gives candidates a chance to see the short code-reading format before the timed assessment of 15 questions in 10 minutes. It is not a long coding assignment.
Which roles and experience level fit the ASP.NET skills test?+
It is intended for intermediate back-end and full-stack .NET developers, ASP.NET web and API developers, and engineers moving older ASP.NET applications to ASP.NET Core. Use it when the role calls for working knowledge of MVC, Web APIs, authentication and authorization, or real-time apps with SignalR.
