The short answer
The AWS test is a 10-minute, 15-question hiring assessment for intermediate cloud engineers and architects, DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, and backend or platform developers. Short scenarios assess judgment in designing and operating AWS workloads for security, reliability, performance, and cost.
What it measures
Judgment in designing and operating AWS workloads for security, reliability, performance and cost.
Security
Covers design choices for protecting data and access in AWS workloads.
Operational excellence and reliability
Covers choices that help keep systems running and recoverable.
Performance efficiency
Covers matching AWS resources to workload demand.
Cost optimization
Covers choices that keep AWS workload spending under control.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Cloud engineers and architects, DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, backend and platform developers, and other roles that build or run systems on AWS day to day.
A practical signal beyond the resume
Assess applied judgment
A resume can list AWS experience, but it cannot show how a candidate weighs a short workload scenario. Multiple-choice questions ask candidates to choose one or every right answer, showing whether they can apply the material rather than only recognize it.
Focus on four work areas
The questions cover security, operational excellence and reliability, performance efficiency, and cost optimization. That gives you a focused view of the design judgment this AWS test measures, rather than a broad review of unrelated skills.
Keep screening concise
The assessment takes 10 minutes and has 15 questions. Use its results to decide where a work sample or interview should probe further, instead of spending early interview time checking every area from scratch.
Give candidates a consistent prompt
Each question presents a short situation, table, or statement, and the facts needed beyond everyday AWS practice are stated in the question. Candidates respond to the same kind of job-relevant scenarios without relying on recall of prices, quotas, or console screens.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Test setup and integrity signals
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools, with a different question order and shuffled answer options. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the remaining time. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. The test does not allow back-navigation. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. These are summarized in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline for the employer to review. The system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.
How we prevent AI cheating · Integrity signals
Use the score as evidence, not a verdict
Review the result as one signal about a candidate’s AWS design judgment, not as a decision on its own. Pair it with a work sample that asks the candidate to explain or improve a workload design, then use a structured interview to explore how they reasoned through security, reliability, performance, and cost. Apply the same job-related prompts to each candidate and consider the evidence alongside the role’s needs. The AWS assessment can help you choose which areas to explore, but a person should review the result and decide what follow-up is useful.
Structured interview questions
Tell me about a time you had to protect data and control access in an AWS workload. How did you decide what to change?
Listen for the candidate’s explanation of the situation, the access and data risks they considered, and the reasons behind their design choices.
Describe an AWS system you worked on that needed to stay available or recover after a problem. What tradeoffs did you consider?
Listen for a clear account of reliability and recovery needs, the options they weighed, and how they judged whether the approach fit the workload.
Tell me how you have matched AWS resources to changing workload demand. What did you look at before choosing an approach?
Listen for reasoning about performance needs and demand, rather than a list of product names without context.
Give me an example of a design choice you made to control AWS costs while meeting a workload’s needs. How did you assess the tradeoff?
Listen for how the candidate connected resource choices to spending and the workload requirements they needed to preserve.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Roles and level this assessment suits
This is an intermediate AWS assessment for cloud engineers and architects, DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, backend developers, platform developers, and other people who build or run systems on AWS day to day. Choose it when those responsibilities are part of the role, not as a general test for every technology position. For broader hiring context, see our pre-employment testing guide and test library.
What the scenarios cover
The multiple-choice format presents a short situation, table, or statement and asks candidates to choose the right answer or every right answer. Scenarios call for a design choice across security, keeping systems running and recoverable, matching resources to demand, and spending control. Questions do not rely on memorizing prices, quotas, console screens, or recently launched features. See how we build our tests for more about HireValid’s tests.
Use it as one part of hiring
An AWS skills test offers a short way to gather evidence before a work sample and structured interview. Use the result to choose follow-up topics, then ask candidates to explain their reasoning in their own words. The test is for employers hiring people who work with AWS, not a substitute for reviewing the candidate’s work and experience. Explore the test library to compare assessments for other hiring needs.
Fairness and accommodations
Questions test design judgment in plain scenarios, not recall of prices, quotas, console screens or recently launched features, and every fact needed beyond everyday AWS practice is stated in the question. Questions are written in plain US English with short sentences, use no money symbols, no regional or local knowledge, and use names from many backgrounds. No question depends on a particular company's setup or tooling outside AWS.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
