The short answer

The Docker test is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice screen of hands-on skills configuring, building, connecting, securing and troubleshooting containers. Questions use Dockerfiles, Compose files, commands or outputs to assess storage, image builds, networking and security. It is designed for DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, IT administrators, platform and infrastructure engineers, and developers who build and run containerized services.

What it measures

Hands-on knowledge of configuring, building, connecting, securing and troubleshooting Docker containers.

Setup, configuration and storage

Questions cover configuring the Docker engine and containers, and keeping data with volumes and mounts.

Images and builds

Questions ask candidates to reason about Dockerfiles and changes that produce lean images.

Networking and security

Questions cover connecting containers and choosing changes that lock them down.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

DevOps engineers and leads, site reliability engineers, IT administrators, platform and infrastructure engineers, and developers who build and run containerized services.

What this Docker test helps you see

  1. Evidence beyond resume claims

See how a candidate interprets a Dockerfile, Compose file, command or output, rather than relying only on a list of container skills.

  2. A focused view of container work

The questions cover engine and container setup, volumes and mounts, lean images, container connections and security.

  3. Find useful interview topics

Use answers about builds, storage or troubleshooting to focus a follow-up discussion on the areas most relevant to the role.

  4. A short initial screen

The 10-minute test offers a compact way to gather evidence before spending interview time exploring Docker work in depth.

Controls that support a fair review

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order changes by attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; if a candidate reloads, the same question returns with only the time left. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Personal invitation links expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and unusually fast answers in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline for employer review. It never decides on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments. See our candidate-friendly hiring guide.

Use the score as evidence

Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. It is one input for a person to assess, not a pass mark or a decision on its own. For a work sample, ask the candidate to review a short Docker configuration or explain a container issue relevant to the job. Use the interview to hear their reasoning and tradeoffs. If the role also involves adjacent work, compare the needs with our DevOps or Kubernetes tests.

Structured interview questions

  1. A web app container restarts, and its data needs to persist. How would you investigate and decide what to change?

Listen for a step-by-step review of container configuration and volumes or mounts, tied to the evidence they would check.

  2. A web service in a Compose setup cannot connect to a queue. How would you work through the problem?

Listen for a reasoned troubleshooting path involving how the containers are connected and what configuration they would inspect.

  3. A Docker image is larger than your team expects. How would you review the build and choose a change?

Listen for a practical explanation of how they would inspect the Dockerfile and weigh options for making a leaner image.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use generic services (a web app, a queue, a database) with made-up names, current Docker Engine and Compose v2 behavior on Linux hosts, and short files shown in full, so nothing depends on a particular employer's setup, cloud vendor or memorized screen. Wording is plain US English with no idioms, and every fact a question needs is shown in it.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

Practical questions on running containers with Docker at an intermediate level: configuring the engine and containers, keeping data with volumes and mounts, building lean images, connecting containers, and locking them down. Most questions show a Dockerfile, a Compose file, a command or its output and ask what happens, what is wrong, or which change fixes it.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Docker test measure?+

It measures hands-on knowledge of configuring, building, connecting, securing and troubleshooting Docker containers. Its multiple-choice questions may show a Dockerfile, a Compose file, a command or its output. Topics include volumes and mounts, lean images, container connections and security.

Who should use the Docker test in hiring?+

It is intended for DevOps engineers and leads, site reliability engineers, IT administrators, platform and infrastructure engineers, and developers who build and run containerized services. The questions are at an intermediate level, so match it to the container work the role actually requires.

How long is the Docker test, and what does practice include?+

The test has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. Candidates can try a practice set with 4 questions in 4 minutes. The scored questions use multiple-choice answers and focus on Docker configuration, storage, images, networking and security.

What kinds of questions appear on the Docker test?+

Questions use short files shown in full, commands or outputs, then ask what happens, what is wrong or which change fixes it. They use generic services and current Docker Engine and Compose v2 behavior on Linux hosts, so the question facts do not depend on a particular employer's setup or cloud vendor.
