The short answer
This Kubernetes test uses short, scenario-based multiple-choice questions to assess practical knowledge of cluster architecture, workloads and storage, networking, and troubleshooting. Candidates interpret manifests, kubectl commands, or output and choose what happens, what is wrong, or a fix. It is designed for intermediate Kubernetes administrators, platform and DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, cloud engineers, and developers who support Kubernetes services.
What it measures
Practical knowledge of Kubernetes clusters, workloads, networking and troubleshooting, read from manifests and command output.
How a cluster works
Candidates reason about the parts that make up a cluster and how they work together to run what a manifest describes.
Workloads and storage
Candidates reason about application workloads and storage by identifying expected behavior or a change needed in a scenario.
Services, Ingress and network policy
Questions cover how Services, Ingress, and network policy apply to the situation shown.
Diagnosing and maintaining workloads
Candidates diagnose and maintain workloads by interpreting what a command or its output shows and choosing a useful fix.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Kubernetes administrators, platform and DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, cloud engineers, and developers who deploy and support services on Kubernetes.
What this Kubernetes test can show
Applied knowledge, not just familiarity
Candidates read a manifest, a kubectl command or its output and select the right answer, or every right answer. Their choices give you evidence of how they apply Kubernetes knowledge to the scenario.
A focused view of day-to-day topics
The questions cover cluster architecture, workloads and storage, Services, Ingress, network policy, and diagnosing and maintaining workloads. That scope can help you focus follow-up questions on the parts of the role that matter.
A useful early hiring signal
The 10-minute test has 15 questions. Review the score as one piece of evidence, then decide what to explore in a work sample or structured interview. It can help reserve interview time for job-specific examples rather than basic screening.
A defined level and audience
The intermediate Kubernetes test is intended for Kubernetes administrators, platform and DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, cloud engineers, and developers who deploy and support services on Kubernetes.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the test handles answer sharing
Each candidate receives a different set of questions drawn from large question pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server. If a candidate reloads the page, the same question returns with only the time left. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question in this 10-minute test. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. An employer can review signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. HireValid summarizes these signals in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; it does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as evidence to review
Treat the score as one signal about how the candidate handled the 15 Kubernetes scenarios, not as a decision on its own. Compare it with a work sample that reflects the role, such as reviewing a manifest or discussing a troubleshooting scenario, and use a structured interview with the same job-related questions for each candidate. Consider which sub-skills are most important for the opening. A candidate’s answer can help you identify what to probe, including how they reason about workloads, storage, Services, Ingress, network policy, or command output.
Structured interview questions
Tell me about a Kubernetes workload issue you investigated. What did you look at, and how did you decide what to try next?
Listen for a clear account of the observed behavior, the evidence they used, and how they connected a possible cause to a change or next step.
Describe a time you had to reason about how a Kubernetes Service or Ingress should reach an application. How did you approach it?
Listen for a job-related example that explains the situation, the information they checked, and how they assessed whether the intended connection worked.
Walk me through a change you made to workloads or storage in Kubernetes. How did you check the effect of the change?
Listen for a specific example of the candidate’s role, the signals they examined, and how they checked the workload after changing it.
Tell me about a time command output helped you diagnose or maintain a Kubernetes workload. What did it tell you?
Listen for a reasoned explanation of the output and how it informed their next action, rather than a list of commands without context.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Match the test to the role
This intermediate test is intended for the Kubernetes administrators, platform and DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, cloud engineers, and developers who deploy and support Kubernetes services. Use it when those responsibilities are part of the opening, and consider the candidate’s relevant experience alongside the results. For adjacent technical hiring, you can also review the Terraform, AWS, and Linux tests. A Kubernetes test can help you screen for practical familiarity with manifests and command output, but the role’s actual duties should guide the rest of your process.
What candidates see in the questions
Most questions show a manifest, a kubectl command, or its output, then ask what will happen, what is wrong, or which change fixes it. Candidates select the right answer or, where asked, every right answer. The questions cover how a cluster works, workloads and storage, Services, Ingress and network policy, and diagnosing and maintaining workloads. The materials needed for a question appear in the question itself. Questions use behavior of current stable Kubernetes releases and avoid cloud-provider differences, removed APIs, and vendor-specific tools. Learn more about how we build our tests.
Set expectations before sending an invitation
The Kubernetes test is in English, is desktop-only, and takes 10 minutes for 15 questions. Candidates cannot return to an earlier question. A four-question practice set takes four minutes and lets candidates see the question experience before the hiring test. Explain the format and timing when you invite candidates, then give them time to complete it on a computer so manifests and command output are large enough to read. For wider process guidance, see the pre-employment testing guide.
Fairness and accommodations
Questions use behavior of current stable Kubernetes releases and avoid features that differ by cloud provider or managed service, removed APIs, and vendor-specific tools. Every manifest or output a question needs is shown in the question, so nothing depends on remembering a particular screen. Scenarios use neutral application and team names, plain US English, and no idioms, and the test asks for a computer so manifests and command output are large enough to read.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Kubernetes test measure?+
It measures practical knowledge of Kubernetes clusters, workloads, networking, and troubleshooting. Candidates interpret manifests, kubectl commands, or output in short scenarios and decide what will happen, what is wrong, or which change fixes it. The topics include cluster architecture, workloads and storage, Services, Ingress, network policy, and maintaining workloads.
Who should use the Kubernetes test for hiring?+
It is designed for intermediate Kubernetes administrators, platform and DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, cloud engineers, and developers who deploy and support services on Kubernetes. Use it when Kubernetes knowledge is relevant to the role, then review the score with experience and job-specific evidence.
How long is the Kubernetes test, and what is its format?+
The test has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. It uses multiple-choice questions on short scenarios. Most questions show a manifest, kubectl command, or output, and ask candidates to choose the right answer or every right answer. Candidates cannot return to an earlier question.
Does the Kubernetes test cover cloud-provider-specific tools?+
No. Questions use behavior of current stable Kubernetes releases and avoid features that differ by cloud provider or managed service, removed APIs, and vendor-specific tools. The question includes any manifest or output needed to answer it, so the scenario does not rely on remembering a particular screen.
Is the Kubernetes test an exam or a qualification?+
No. It is a test employers use when hiring to review practical Kubernetes knowledge. It is not exam preparation, and its result stands for nothing beyond the 15 scenarios a candidate answered. A Kubernetes assessment test can be one part of your hiring process, alongside role-relevant experience, a work sample, and a structured interview.
Can candidates practice before taking the Kubernetes test?+
A four-question practice set takes four minutes and gives candidates a chance to see the question experience. It is separate from the hiring test, which has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. The test is intended for employers to assess hiring-related Kubernetes skills, not as practice for an exam.
How should I interpret a Kubernetes assessment score?+
Use the score as evidence to review, not as the sole basis for a hiring decision. Compare it with a work sample and ask consistent, open questions about examples involving manifests, command output, workloads, or networking. A Kubernetes skills test can point to topics for follow-up, while your review considers the full role and candidate evidence.
