The short answer

The B2B outside sales test is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice assessment of judgment in outbound business-to-business selling. Candidates work through sales situations, lead and pipeline tables, product sheets, and buyer conversations. It is designed for intermediate outside and field sales representatives, outbound business development representatives, and related sales roles.

Advancing sales opportunities

Product knowledge and fit

Assesses how candidates match product details to a buyer's needs.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Outside and field sales representatives, outbound business development representatives, account executives in transactional sales, sales team leads, and sales operations staff who support a field team.

What this test can add to your hiring process

  1. See decisions, not just claims

A resume can list sales experience, while this test shows choices across qualifying, pipeline management, product fit, objections, and closing.

  2. Focus interviews on field judgment

Weak spots in qualifying, objections or closing show where to probe, so the interview can test how a candidate would move a real opportunity forward.

  3. See quick field instincts

Each question has its own 35-second timer, so results reflect the fast calls a rep makes in front of a buyer rather than long deliberation.

Test integrity signals for review

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large question pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser receives one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The test runs for 10 minutes, and candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Timing runs on the server; a reload restores the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid summarizes signals, such as time away from the test tab and answers faster than a question can be read, in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. It does not decide on its own. See how we build our tests.

Use the score as evidence, not a verdict

Review the score alongside a relevant work sample and a structured interview. Ask candidates to explain choices from realistic field sales situations, including how they would qualify a lead or respond to an objection. Consider their reasoning against the role’s needs; do not use the score alone to decide. For related context, compare the Sales Aptitude test.

Structured interview questions

  1. Tell me about a time you had to decide whether a prospect was ready for a sales conversation. What did you consider, and what did you do next?

Listen for the candidate’s reasoning about readiness and a clear next step.

  2. Describe a sales opportunity that stalled. How did you decide what action to take?

Listen for how they assessed the situation and chose a way to move the opportunity forward.

  3. Tell me about a buyer objection you handled. How did you respond and what happened next?

Listen for a relevant response to the buyer’s concern and a thoughtful account of the outcome.

Fairness and accommodations

Every fact a question needs is stated in it: products and companies are fictional, so no knowledge of a particular industry, brand or sales method is required. Deal values are plain numbers with no currency symbols, the arithmetic is light enough for scratch paper, and the wording avoids idioms, sports and local customs. Buyers and sellers have names from many backgrounds, genders and ages, and scenarios avoid stereotypes. Questions are kept short and in plain language so reading speed matters little.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
