The short answer

The MongoDB test is a 10-minute, 15-question assessment for database administrators and backend developers who work with MongoDB. It measures practical judgment on access control, deployment layout, query and index performance, and data durability. Questions show shell commands, configuration snippets, or explain output, and ask candidates to interpret them or choose a safe, fast, dependable option.

What it measures

Practical MongoDB judgment on access control, deployment layout, query and index performance, and data durability.

Security

Covers judgment about access control in MongoDB deployments.

Infrastructure

Focuses on deployment layout and configuration choices.

Performance

Covers query and index choices that affect performance.

Reliability

Looks at data durability and dependable deployment choices.

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Database administrators who look after MongoDB deployments, and backend developers who design schemas, queries and indexes for applications built on MongoDB.

A focused view of practical MongoDB judgment

  1. Look beyond resume claims

See candidates interpret MongoDB shell commands, configuration snippets, and explain output rather than relying only on stated experience.

  2. Check role-relevant decisions

Review evidence on access control, deployment layout, query and index performance, and data durability for database administrator or backend developer roles.

  3. Keep screening focused

The 10-minute assessment gives your team a concise signal to review before spending interview time on deeper MongoDB scenarios.

  4. Use a consistent starting point

Each candidate gets questions on the same defined skill areas, giving interviewers a practical basis for follow-up.

Assessment integrity signals for review

Each candidate gets a different set of questions from large pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser shows one question at a time. The 10-minute timer runs on the server. Reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back. Question text cannot be copied or selected; blocked copy attempts are recorded in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline summarize signals for the employer to review; neither decides on its own. With candidate consent, webcam photos can be added at random moments.

Treat the score as evidence, not a decision

Use the result to identify topics for review, then pair it with a short MongoDB work sample and a structured interview. For a work sample, ask the candidate to reason through a shell command, configuration snippet, or explain output relevant to the role. Review how they approach access control, deployment layout, query and index performance, or data durability. The score should inform your assessment, never stand alone. If the role also calls for relational database skills, see PostgreSQL and SQL Coding: Querying. For deployment context, compare with Docker.

Structured interview questions

  1. How would you review access control in a MongoDB deployment before a change goes live?

Listen for a reasoned approach to access control and the candidate's ability to explain trade-offs.

  2. What would you examine in this query and explain output, and how would you decide what to investigate next?

Listen for a clear reading of the output and a thoughtful approach to query and index performance.

  3. How would you assess whether this deployment layout fits the application's needs?

Listen for practical reasoning about infrastructure and the needs of the deployment.

  4. What would you change in this configuration to make the deployment more dependable?

Listen for attention to data durability and the candidate's explanation of the proposed change.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral sample data such as orders, sensors, tickets and inventory, with names from many backgrounds, no money symbols and no local knowledge. Behavior is described for MongoDB 6.0 and later community features, so nothing depends on a paid edition, a hosting provider or a particular operating system. Code is short and shown in the question, so candidates read rather than recall exact syntax.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

Short, timed questions on running and building with MongoDB at an intermediate level. Most questions show a shell command, a configuration snippet or an excerpt of explain output. The candidate decides what it does, what is wrong with it, or which choice keeps a deployment safe, fast and dependable.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Frequently asked questions

What does the MongoDB test measure?+

It measures practical judgment on access control, deployment layout, query and index performance, and data durability. Candidates interpret short shell commands, configuration snippets, or explain output, then assess what they do, what may be wrong, or which choice supports a safe, fast, dependable deployment.

Who should use the MongoDB test?+

It is intended for database administrators who look after MongoDB deployments and backend developers who design schemas, queries, and indexes for MongoDB applications. Its intermediate level and practical questions make it relevant when those responsibilities are part of the role.

How long is the MongoDB test?+

The test has 15 multiple-choice questions and a 10-minute time limit. Candidates see one question at a time and cannot go back to an earlier question, so each answer is final once they move on.

Does the MongoDB test depend on a paid edition or hosting provider?+

No. Behavior is described for MongoDB 6.0 and later community features, so nothing depends on a paid edition, a hosting provider or a particular operating system. Code is short and shown in the question, so candidates read rather than recall exact syntax.

Can candidates try the MongoDB test before taking it?+

Yes. The practice set has 4 questions and a 4-minute time limit, so candidates can get used to the timed, multiple-choice format before the real test starts.
