Het korte antwoord

The jQuery test is an intermediate, 10-minute check for front-end, full-stack, JavaScript, and other web developers who build or maintain jQuery pages. Candidates read short markup and script snippets and predict selector results, page changes, event handlers, animations, and jQuery UI widget behavior.

Wat het meet

Reading and predicting jQuery code: selectors and traversal, DOM changes, event handling, effects and jQuery UI widgets.

Selectors and traversal

Candidates predict which elements a selector or traversal chain reaches in short snippets.

DOM manipulation

Questions ask candidates to work out how jQuery code changes the page.

Event handling

Candidates predict which handlers run when a user clicks or types.

Effects and jQuery UI

Questions cover how animations and jQuery UI widgets behave.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Front-end, full-stack and web developers, JavaScript developers, and other roles that build or maintain pages written with jQuery at an intermediate level.

See practical code-reading evidence

  1. Check reasoning from real snippets

Candidates predict which elements a selector reaches and how a traversal chain affects the result, rather than only describing their experience on a resume.

  2. Review expected page behavior

Questions about DOM changes show how candidates interpret code that updates a page, a useful signal when hiring developers to maintain jQuery sites.

  3. Explore interactive behavior

Click and typing scenarios reveal whether candidates can reason through event handlers, while animation and jQuery UI questions cover interface behavior.

  4. Current behavior, not version trivia

Questions follow current jQuery 3 and jQuery UI 1.13 behavior and avoid version history, so results reflect how candidates read the code they would maintain today.

Test integrity signals for review

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools, in a different order, with shuffled answer options. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. HireValid can summarize signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline. An employer reviews those signals; they do not decide on their own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as one signal

Review the score alongside a work sample and a structured interview, not as a stand-alone decision or pass mark. A work sample can ask a candidate to explain or extend a jQuery interaction relevant to the role. Use the same job-related prompts and review evidence against the needs of the position. Vragen voor gestructureerde sollicitatiegesprekken

  1. Tell me about a page interaction you built or maintained with jQuery. How did you work out which elements it should affect?

Listen for a concrete example, how the candidate reasoned about selectors or traversal, and how they checked the resulting behavior.

  2. Describe a time a click or typing interaction did not behave as expected. How did you investigate and address it?

Look for a clear account of the handler behavior, the steps taken to trace the issue, and how the candidate confirmed the change.

  3. How would you approach extending an existing jQuery UI widget interaction on a page?

Listen for a practical plan to understand the existing behavior, make a targeted change, and check the user-facing result.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions test how code behaves rather than memory of version history or trivia, and they follow current jQuery 3 and jQuery UI 1.13 behavior. Snippets are short, use plain English names for elements and classes with no idioms, brands or local references, and the reading level is kept simple so the test measures coding skill rather than English. Every candidate gets the same time per question and no outside aids.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A ten-minute check of practical jQuery skill. Candidates read short snippets of markup and script and predict what they do: which elements a selector or traversal chain reaches, how the page changes, which handlers run when a user clicks or types, and how animations and jQuery UI widgets behave. It suits screening developers who maintain or extend sites and applications built with jQuery.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Veelgestelde vragen

Can candidates take the jQuery test on a phone?+

Yes. The test runs on a phone or a desktop computer. Its 15 questions come one at a time in 10 minutes, with the same time per question for every candidate, and each is answered once, in order, with no going back.

How does the jQuery test keep its questions fair?+

Questions assess how code behaves, not trivia. Short snippets use plain English names for elements and classes, without idioms, brands, or local references, and the reading level is kept simple so the test measures coding skill rather than English.

Which roles fit the intermediate jQuery test?+

It suits intermediate front-end, full-stack, and JavaScript developers, along with other roles that build or maintain pages written with jQuery. Use it when the job involves reading or extending jQuery code, including interactions, page changes, and jQuery UI widgets.

Can candidates use aids or try the jQuery test first?+

No outside aids are allowed during the test. Candidates can try a practice set of 4 questions in 4 minutes first, which lets them get used to reading short markup and script snippets before the scored questions.
