الإجابة المختصرة

The MySQL assessment is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice test of intermediate hands-on database work. Candidates read short SQL statements and small sample tables, then choose what a statement does, what it returns or which statement meets a stated need. It measures table design, transactions, access, joins, aggregate queries and stored routines for developers, administrators, data engineers and analysts.

ما الذي يقيسه

Practical MySQL skill: designing and altering tables, changing data inside transactions, controlling access, and writing joins, aggregate queries and stored routines.

Table design and schema changes

Checks choices for designing tables and making changes to an existing schema.

Data changes, transactions and access

Covers changing data safely inside transactions and controlling database access.

Queries, joins and stored routines

Checks how candidates write joins, aggregate queries and stored routines.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Back-end and web developers, application developers, database developers and administrators, data engineers, and analysts who write SQL against MySQL databases day to day.

What this MySQL assessment can show

  1. Evidence beyond a resume

See candidates interpret short SQL statements and sample tables, rather than relying only on a list of MySQL experience.

  2. A focused view of day-to-day work

Review table design, schema changes, transactions, access control, joins, aggregate queries and stored routines in one short assessment.

  3. Better interview follow-up

Use the results to choose which MySQL tasks to explore further in a work sample and structured interview.

  4. A defined screen

Use the 10-minute, 15-question format to gather comparable evidence for candidates applying to database-focused roles.

Test integrity signals for review

Each attempt draws a different set from large question pools, changes question order and shuffles answer options. The browser receives one question at a time, and candidates cannot return to an earlier question; answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The server runs the timer, so reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be selected or copied, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. An employer reviews those signals; the system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, random webcam photos can be added.

Use the score as one piece of evidence

Review the score alongside a short work sample and a structured interview. Ask the candidate to explain choices in a MySQL task, such as changing a table or writing a join, then compare that reasoning with the assessment evidence. The score should support a person's review, not make the hiring decision. Explore related options: SQL Coding: Querying, PostgreSQL and Pandas.

Structured MySQL interview questions

  1. A table needs a new field while keeping its existing records. How would you plan and make that change?

Listen for a clear approach to altering a table and considering the existing data.

  2. You need to update several related records, but the change must not be left partly complete. How would you handle it?

Listen for a transaction-based approach and an explanation of how they would manage the data change safely.

  3. How would you return the number of orders per customer from a customers table and an orders table, including customers with no orders?

Listen for a suitable join and grouping, and clear reasoning about which rows appear in the result.

  4. A team member needs limited database access for a task. How would you decide what access to provide?

Listen for a considered way to control access that fits the stated need.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral sample data such as orders, stock, bookings, courses and sensor readings, with names from many backgrounds, plain numbers instead of money symbols, and no idioms or local knowledge. Every question states the MySQL version and settings it assumes, so no candidate is marked down for a server default they could not see. Code is kept short and the reading level plain, so the test measures SQL skill rather than reading speed in English.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: no norms exist yet. Reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed the test.
