الإجابة المختصرة

The ETL test is a timed hiring assessment with 15 multiple-choice questions in 10 minutes. It measures practical judgment in designing loads, tuning performance, checking output and operating pipelines. Use it for ETL developers, data engineers, data warehouse developers and managers, BI developers, data architects, and database administrators who support data loads.

ما الذي يقيسه

Practical ETL judgment: designing loads, tuning them, checking their output, and running pipelines reliably.

ETL design and development

Covers choices involved in building loads that move data from source systems into a warehouse or reporting store.

Performance tuning

Covers practical choices for improving how a data load runs.

Testing and data checks

Covers ways to check a load's output against the data it should produce.

Pipeline operations

Covers the judgment needed to run and support data pipelines.

Roles this test fits

ETL developers, data engineers, data warehouse developers and managers, business intelligence developers, data architects, and database administrators who build or support data loads.

Make pipeline judgment easier to discuss

  1. See application, not just familiarity

Candidates read SQL snippets, sample tables or run logs, then choose how to model, speed up, check or operate a load. The format is intended to show whether they can apply ETL material, not just recognize it.

  2. Cover the work behind a load

The ETL assessment looks across design, performance tuning, testing and data checks, and pipeline operations. It gives you a structured starting point for discussing how a candidate approaches the parts of a data load your role supports.

  3. Keep the test vendor-neutral

Questions use standard SQL rather than one vendor's extensions. That lets you ask about general ETL practice without making experience with a particular tool the focus of this assessment.

  4. Use a short, defined exercise

The test takes 10 minutes and contains 15 questions. Candidates may use scratch paper. A separate practice set has 4 questions and takes 4 minutes, so candidates can see the question format before taking the assessment.

A question flow with review signals

Each candidate gets a different question set from large question pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser receives one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the time left. The test does not allow back navigation. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Invitation links are personal and expire. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and unusually fast answers in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. The employer reviews those signals; they do not decide on their own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Treat the score as evidence to review

Use the score as one input, not as a hiring decision or a substitute for job evidence. Compare it with a work sample based on the pipeline tasks the role actually supports. For example, you could ask the candidate to explain a sample load, review a run log, or describe checks they would make on sample output. Keep the work sample relevant to the job and use the same prompt and review criteria for each candidate. Then use a structured interview to ask how they reached their choices. The pre-employment testing guide can help you place a test within a broader hiring process. The score can focus a follow-up conversation, but a person should review the evidence and the rest of the application.

Ask candidates to explain their choices

  1. How would you decide what to check in a load that moves order data into a reporting store?

Listen for a clear explanation of the expected output and the checks they would use to assess it. Ask how they would investigate a discrepancy rather than accepting a list of check names.

  2. Tell me about a time you had to improve a slow data load. How did you identify what to change?

Listen for a step-by-step account of how they examined the load, considered possible changes and evaluated the result. Invite them to distinguish their own work from the team's work.

  3. A run log shows that a pipeline did not complete as expected. What would you review first, and why?

Listen for a reasoned approach to using the log and relevant pipeline details. Follow up on how they would decide what to investigate next and communicate the issue.

  4. How have you chosen a way to structure a load for the data and destination involved?

Listen for tradeoffs tied to the source data and the destination, rather than a memorized definition. Ask what information would change their approach.

Which roles fit this ETL assessment test?

This intermediate assessment is for ETL developers, data engineers, data warehouse developers and managers, business intelligence developers, data architects, and database administrators who build or support data loads. It is aimed at candidates whose work includes pipeline design, tuning, checks or operations. It is not a general measure of data knowledge; its questions focus on practical ETL choices. For a broader set of options, browse the test library and compare the skills each test covers before choosing what to include.

What candidates work through

The timed questions use short, practical prompts about moving data from source systems into a warehouse or reporting store. Candidates may read SQL snippets, sample tables or run logs, then choose how to model, speed up, check or operate a load. Multiple-choice questions can ask for the right answer or every right answer. Some use neutral business data such as orders, shipments, sensors and support tickets. The ETL test uses standard SQL and is vendor-neutral, so it focuses on general ETL practice rather than one product.

Use this test when the role requires data-load judgment. If the job also calls for spreadsheet work, consider the Microsoft Excel Intermediate test as a separate measure. If reasoning through unfamiliar problems is also important, the Problem Solving test can add another perspective. Keep each result tied to the skill it measures, and review results alongside the role's work sample and interview evidence.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral business data such as orders, shipments, sensors and support tickets, with amounts written as plain numbers and no currency symbols, idioms or local knowledge. Names in sample data come from many backgrounds. Code is written in standard SQL without any one vendor's extensions, so candidates are not favored for the tools they happen to have used, and the reading level is kept plain so the test measures ETL skill rather than English fluency. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What does the ETL test measure?+

It measures practical ETL judgment across load design, performance tuning, testing and data checks, and pipeline operations. Candidates read short situations, SQL snippets, sample tables or run logs and choose how to model, speed up, check or operate a load. The score is evidence for an employer to review, not a hiring decision.

How long is the ETL test, and what is the format?+

The assessment has 15 multiple-choice questions and takes 10 minutes. A question may present a short situation, table or statement and ask for the right answer or every right answer. Candidates can use scratch paper. The separate practice set has 4 questions and takes 4 minutes.

Which hiring roles is this ETL assessment for?+

It is intended for ETL developers, data engineers, data warehouse developers and managers, business intelligence developers, data architects, and database administrators who build or support data loads. The intermediate level suits hiring where pipeline design, tuning, data checks or operations are part of the role.

Does the ETL test require a particular vendor's tools?+

No. Questions use standard SQL without any one vendor's extensions, and the content reflects general ETL practice. Candidates read practical material such as SQL snippets, tables and run logs. Use the result to discuss how their choices relate to your own systems, rather than treating familiarity with a particular product as what the assessment measures.

How should I use an ETL test score in hiring?+

Review it as one piece of evidence, alongside a relevant work sample and a structured interview. Ask candidates to explain a choice involving a load, a run log or checks on sample output. The score does not set a pass mark or decide whom to hire; a person reviews it with the rest of the job-related evidence.

What does the ETL test do to discourage outside assistance?+

Candidates receive different question sets, with shuffled question order and answer options. The browser shows one question at a time, the timer runs on the server, and the test does not allow back navigation. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab and pastes into answers for an employer to review; these signals do not make a decision on their own.
