Roles that rely on spreadsheets every day at an advanced level: financial and data analysts, accountants, auditors, finance and sales operations staff, HR and marketing analysts, and experienced administrative and reporting specialists.

A focused view of advanced spreadsheet judgment

  1. Look beyond a resume claim

See how a candidate interprets formulas and small worksheets, rather than relying only on a stated level of Excel experience.

  2. Cover practical decisions

The questions address data organization, reporting, charts and analysis features in one short screen.

  3. Keep the process focused

Use the 10-minute result to decide what to explore in a work sample and structured interview.

Test controls and review signals

Each candidate receives a different question set from large pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser shows one question at a time. Timing runs on the server; if a candidate reloads, the same question returns with only the remaining time. Questions cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Invitation links are personal and expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read. These are summarized in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for the employer to review, not an automatic decision. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as evidence

Review the result as one signal, not a hiring decision or cutoff. Reliability is provisional, and no norms exist yet. Pair the result with a work sample that reflects the spreadsheet tasks in the job, then use a structured interview to explore the candidate's choices. If the role needs everyday rather than advanced spreadsheet work, as an Office Administrator often does, compare Microsoft Excel Intermediate or Google Sheets.

Explore how they approach spreadsheet work

  1. How would you check a complex formula before using its result in a report?

Listen for a clear way to trace the formula and verify that its result fits the worksheet data.

  2. Tell me how you would organize a worksheet that needs to be summarized for a team.

Listen for practical choices about cleaning, organizing and summarizing the data.

  3. How would you decide which chart or analysis approach to use for a business question?

Listen for reasoning that connects the data and reporting need to an appropriate chart or tool.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions describe the current desktop version of Microsoft Excel, with English function names and commas between arguments, and ask what a feature does rather than where it sits in a menu or which keyboard shortcut opens it, so Windows and Mac users stand on equal footing. Worksheets use neutral business data with plain numbers instead of currency symbols, dates with the month written as a word or in year-month-day order, metric units and names from many backgrounds. Charts never depend on color alone, scratch paper is allowed for everyone, and the arithmetic stays small enough to do in your head.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it. No norms exist yet, so scores are best compared among candidates for the same role.
