الإجابة المختصرة
The network engineering test measures applied knowledge of protocols, network design, security and troubleshooting through short, vendor-neutral scenarios. It is an intermediate, multiple-choice hiring assessment for network engineers and administrators, network architects, NOC technicians and IT support engineers. It has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes.
ما الذي يقيسه
Applied knowledge of network protocols, design, security and troubleshooting in short scenarios, under time pressure.
Protocols and standards
Questions explore how common network protocols behave in practical situations.
Architecture and design
Scenarios ask candidates to reason about network planning, architecture, segmentation and address plans.
Security and firewalls
Rule tables and scenarios cover how traffic is filtered and protected.
Troubleshooting and optimization
Candidates trace faults from symptoms and consider ways to optimize network behavior.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Network engineers and administrators, network architects, systems and security engineers, NOC technicians, IT support engineers, IT infrastructure and IT managers, and IT consultants.
Evidence grounded in network work
Applied protocol knowledge
Scenario questions show how a candidate reasons about common protocol behavior, rather than only recalling definitions.
Planning with address details
Address plans and network design scenarios give you evidence of how candidates approach planning and segmentation.
Reasoning from network clues
Rule tables and generic tool output let candidates work through traffic filtering and fault symptoms without relying on one vendor's commands.
A consistent setup
Every candidate may use scratch paper. Scenarios use plain US English, private address ranges and small powers-of-two subnet arithmetic that can be worked by hand.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Test integrity signals for review
Each candidate receives a different set of questions, with question order and answer options shuffled. Questions arrive one at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid's servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the time left, and candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Copying or selecting question text is blocked, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. HireValid can summarize signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and unusually fast answers in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. It does not decide on its own. Webcam photos can be added at random moments only with candidate consent. See how we build our tests and our candidate-friendly hiring guide.

Use the score as one piece of evidence
Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview; do not use it alone or as an automatic decision. A work sample might ask the candidate to explain how they would investigate a network fault from provided symptoms or review a simple address plan. Compare their reasoning with the needs of the role. The Computer Networking Fundamentals test may also help when you want to assess a separate, foundational area.
أسئلة المقابلة المنظّمة
A user reports that a network service is unreachable. How would you investigate the issue?
Listen for a clear sequence that starts from symptoms, checks relevant protocol behavior and uses evidence to narrow down possible faults.
How would you plan and segment a network for a described set of teams or services?
Ask the candidate to explain their design choices and how the address plan supports the needs in the scenario.
How would you review a set of traffic-filtering rules for a proposed network change?
Listen for careful reasoning about which traffic is affected, how the rules protect the network and what they would verify after the change.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Questions are vendor-neutral: they use standard protocol behavior and generic tool output, never one vendor's command syntax, product names or defaults that differ between platforms. Scenarios use plain US English, documentation and private address ranges, and invented organizations with no local knowledge, money or idioms needed. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate, and any subnet arithmetic uses powers of two small enough to work by hand.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A short, timed test of the working knowledge a network engineer draws on every day: how common protocols behave, how networks are planned and segmented, how traffic is filtered and protected, and how faults are traced from their symptoms. Questions are vendor-neutral and built around small scenarios, address plans, rule tables and tool output rather than recall of definitions.
- Questions are in English.
- Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.
الأسئلة الشائعة
Which roles suit the Network Engineering test?+
It is intended for intermediate hiring across network engineers and administrators, network architects, systems and security engineers, NOC technicians, IT support engineers, IT infrastructure and IT managers, and IT consultants. Match the test to the work in the role, rather than treating the score as a decision by itself.
What practice is available for the Network Engineering test?+
Candidates can try a separate practice set of 4 questions in 4 minutes. It shows them the question format, including address plans, rule tables and tool output, before the hiring test begins.
How does the Network Engineering test handle vendor differences?+
Questions use standard protocol behavior and generic tool output, not one vendor's command syntax, product names or platform-specific defaults. Scenarios use plain US English and private address ranges. Scratch paper is allowed, and subnet arithmetic uses powers of two small enough to work by hand.
Can candidates return to earlier Network Engineering test questions?+
No. The test presents one question at a time, and once a candidate moves on they cannot go back to change an answer. Scratch paper helps here: candidates can work out subnet arithmetic by hand before they commit to an answer.
