الإجابة المختصرة

The Bash assessment is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice check of practical shell skills. Candidates interpret short commands, listings and scripts, including what they do or print and which command does the job. It measures files and core commands, access modes, pipelines, text patterns, scripts and the shell environment for roles such as system administrators and DevOps engineers.

ما الذي يقيسه

Working knowledge of the Bash shell: files and core commands, ownership and access modes, pipelines and text patterns, and scripts and the shell environment.

Files and core commands

Candidates interpret commands and listings related to working with files in Bash.

Ownership and access modes

Questions check knowledge of file ownership and access modes.

Streams, pipelines and text patterns

Candidates consider what pipelines and text patterns do with shell streams.

Scripts and shell environment

Questions cover scripts and the Bash shell environment.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

System administrators, Linux administrators and power users, DevOps and site reliability engineers, security engineers, systems engineers and web developers who use the command line.

Useful evidence for a Bash hiring decision

  1. Read real shell output

Candidates work out what a command, listing or short script does or prints, the same reading a working administrator does before running something.

  2. No trivia or rare flags

Every question states its setup, Bash 5 on a typical Linux system with default shell options, so scores reflect everyday shell use rather than memorized edge cases.

  3. Access modes alongside scripting

Ownership and access modes are scored as their own sub-skill, useful for administrator and security roles where a wrong mode is a real risk.

Assessment integrity features

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large question pools. Question order changes between attempts, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, while answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the time left. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Each personal invitation link expires, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. It never decides on its own. With candidate consent, employers can add webcam photos at random moments.

Review the score as evidence

Treat the Bash assessment score as one signal for a person to review, not a hiring decision. Pair it with a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. If the role also covers running Linux systems, you can add our Linux test to the same assessment. Use the sub-skill scores and the job's needs to decide what to explore in the interview.

أسئلة المقابلة المنظّمة

  1. How would you investigate a command that produces different output than you expected?

Listen for a clear, step-by-step explanation of how they would inspect the command, its setup and the resulting output.

  2. Tell me about a time you used a pipeline to work with text from a command.

Listen for a specific account of the task, how the pipeline and text patterns fit, and how they checked the result.

  3. How would you approach a task involving file ownership or access modes?

Listen for a practical explanation that connects the access requirement to ownership and file modes.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral file names, user names from many backgrounds and plain US English kept short, so the test measures shell knowledge rather than reading speed. Every question states the setup it relies on (Bash 5 on a typical Linux system with default shell options), and no question turns on a rarely used flag, one vendor's tooling or trivia that a working user would look up.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What does the Bash assessment measure?+

It checks working knowledge of Bash files and core commands, ownership and access modes, pipelines and text patterns, and scripts and the shell environment. Candidates interpret short commands, listings and scripts, including what they do or print and which one does the job.

Who is the Bash assessment intended for?+

It is an intermediate-level test for people who use the command line, including system administrators, Linux administrators, power users, DevOps and site reliability engineers, security engineers, systems engineers and web developers.

Which Bash version and system do the questions assume?+

Every question states the setup it relies on: Bash 5 on a typical Linux system with default shell options. Candidates do not have to guess how a different shell or a changed option would behave, so a wrong answer points to a gap in shell knowledge rather than a mismatch of environments.

Can candidates use aids during the Bash assessment?+

No aids are allowed. Candidates can first use a practice set with 4 questions and a 4-minute time limit. The assessment itself does not allow candidates to go back to an earlier question.

Does the Bash assessment test rarely used flags or vendor tools?+

No. No question turns on a rarely used flag, one vendor's tooling or trivia that a working user would look up. Questions use neutral file names, user names from many backgrounds and short, plain US English, so the test measures shell knowledge rather than reading speed.
