الإجابة المختصرة

The clean code test is a 10-minute, 15-question check for software engineers, developers, architects, technical leads and others who write or review code. Multiple-choice questions use brief snippets or design choices to assess how candidates judge readability, simplicity, SOLID principles and sound design under time pressure.

ما الذي يقيسه

Judging code for readability, simplicity, SOLID principles and sound design, from short snippets under time pressure.

Readability

Candidates judge which code reads clearly in short snippets.

Simplicity and refactoring

Candidates consider simplicity and refactoring when judging code quality.

SOLID principles

Candidates identify design choices that bend SOLID principles.

Design principles

Candidates judge design choices for soundness and maintainability.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Software engineers, developers, architects, technical leads and anyone who writes or reviews code, from a few years of experience upward.

What the clean code test can show

  1. Look beyond resume claims

A resume describes experience. This test shows how candidates judge brief code snippets and design choices for readability, simplicity and maintainability.

  2. Focus your review

See evidence about how candidates approach SOLID principles and sound design, then use it to guide a work sample and interview discussion.

  3. Fair to any language background

Snippets avoid tricks peculiar to one language and skip house-style debates such as tabs versus spaces, so developers from different stacks are judged on the same design sense.

Test controls and review signals

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order and answer options are shuffled, and the browser shows one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing also runs on the server: reloading returns the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and blocked copy attempts are recorded. A personal invitation link expires, and a completed test cannot be taken again. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers that are faster than a question can be read. Employers can review an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; neither decides on its own. With candidate consent, random webcam photos can be added.

Use the score as evidence

Treat the score as one signal for a person to review, not a decision. Compare it with a work sample that asks the candidate to explain or improve code, then use a structured interview to explore their choices. For related evidence, see the Software Engineer and Object Oriented Programming tests. A Git or GitHub test measures tool use, so review those results separately rather than as substitutes for code-quality judgment.

أسئلة المقابلة المنظّمة

  1. Tell me about a code change you made easier for another developer to understand.

Listen for a specific example, the candidate’s reasoning about readability and how they considered the effect on people maintaining the code.

  2. Describe a time you refactored code that was difficult to change. How did you decide what to simplify?

Listen for a clear explanation of the original difficulty, the changes considered and how the candidate judged whether the code became simpler.

  3. Tell me about a design choice you challenged during a code review.

Listen for how the candidate explained the concern, considered design principles and discussed the choice with others.

Fairness and accommodations

Snippets are short and written in widely used languages, and avoid features or tricks peculiar to one language, so answers depend on design judgment rather than one language's syntax. Questions keep to widely shared practice and steer clear of house-style matters such as brace placement or tabs versus spaces. Names in code come from many backgrounds, the domains are everyday ones (orders, bookings, stock, messages), and the English is plain.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, timed check of how well a candidate judges the quality of code. Each question shows a brief snippet or a design choice and asks which version reads best, what makes it harder to change, or which principle it bends. Together the questions show whether a candidate writes and reviews code that others can maintain.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Does the clean code test depend on a particular programming language?+

The snippets are short and written in widely used languages. They avoid features or tricks peculiar to one language, so the questions focus on design judgment rather than syntax. They also avoid house-style preferences such as brace placement or tabs versus spaces, and use plain English and everyday domains such as orders, bookings, stock and messages.

Can candidates use aids during the clean code test?+

No aids are listed as allowed for this test. It has 15 multiple-choice questions in 10 minutes, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Each question asks them to judge a brief snippet or design choice, such as what makes code harder to change.

What practice is available for the clean code test?+

Candidates can try a practice set of 4 questions with a 4-minute time limit. It offers a short way to experience the multiple-choice format, which uses brief code snippets or design choices to ask about readability, maintainability and principles.

Which roles and experience level suit the clean code test?+

It is intended for software engineers, developers, architects, technical leads and others who write or review code, from a few years of experience upward. The test is intermediate and focuses on judging code quality under time pressure, including readability, simplicity, SOLID principles and design.
