Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Data analyst, reporting analyst, business analyst, operations analyst and other roles that turn spreadsheet data into figures and charts.

What this test can show

  1. Formula reasoning

See whether a candidate can work out summary and lookup formula results from a worksheet, not just describe formulas.

  2. Care with date and text data

Questions reveal how candidates approach messy text, dates and times, with dates written using the month name to avoid misreading.

  3. Chart reading

Candidates interpret charts by their labels, axes and values, so color alone does not carry the information.

  4. Pivot tables and what-if analysis

Questions on pivot tables, filters, input rules and what-if analysis show whether a candidate knows which Excel tool answers a question, read from the data on screen rather than recalled menus.

Assessment integrity signals

Each candidate gets a different set of questions from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read. The employer can review an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline; it never decides on its own. With candidate consent, webcam photos can be added at random moments.

Use the score as evidence

Review the score alongside a work sample and a structured interview, never on its own. For example, ask the candidate to explain how they would tidy text, dates and times in a spreadsheet. Compare their explanation with their test responses. The score is a signal for your review, not a hiring decision. For reporting tools beyond spreadsheets, see the Power BI and Tableau tests.

أسئلة المقابلة المنظّمة

  1. How would you check whether a summary formula gives a useful view of a worksheet?

Listen for a clear explanation of the data they would inspect and how they would interpret the result.

  2. What would you consider when tidying a spreadsheet with messy text, dates and times?

Listen for a practical approach to making the values easier to analyze and avoiding date misreads.

  3. How would you decide whether a chart communicates the data clearly?

Listen for attention to its labels, axes and values, rather than relying on color alone.

Fairness and accommodations

Worksheets use everyday business data with no money symbols, dates written with the month as a word so they cannot be misread, and functions as they work in current versions of Microsoft Excel with US settings. Charts are described by their labels, axes and values, never by color alone, and names in the data come from many backgrounds. Each question shows what it asks about, and the test asks for a computer so sheets and charts are large enough to read.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: there are no norms yet, and reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
