الإجابة المختصرة
The Coding: Stacks and Queues test is an intermediate, single-task programming assessment for software engineers, backend and full stack developers, and other programming roles that use these structures. Candidates write a function to solve a stated problem, and their score reflects the hidden test cases their code passes.
ما الذي يقيسه
Writing working code that uses stacks and queues to solve a stated problem.
Stacks and Queues
Candidates use last-in-first-out or first-in-first-out data handling to solve tasks such as matching nested symbols, simulating a job line, evaluating an expression, or finding the next larger value.
Question formats
Coding tasks
The candidate: Writes or fixes code in an editor and runs it against examples.
You see: Working code, checked against hidden test cases, not just knowledge of syntax.
1 task in 35 minutes.
Roles this test fits
Software engineers, backend and full stack developers, and other programming roles that call for everyday use of last-in-first-out and first-in-first-out structures.
What this coding task can show
Working code, not just a claim
See whether a candidate can write a function that uses a stack, queue, or double-ended queue to solve a stated problem, rather than relying only on a resume.
Behavior across hidden cases
The code runs against hidden test cases, including edge cases spelled out by the task. The score shows the share of cases the solution passes.
Problem-solving in context
Task scenarios can involve matching nested symbols, evaluating an expression, or finding the next larger value, giving you code tied to a concrete prompt.
A choice of coding language
Candidates solve the task in any of six languages with that language's standard library, so you see their stack and queue handling in the language they know best.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Test integrity signals
Each candidate receives a different question set from large pools, and the browser displays one question at a time. Timing runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the time left. This is a 35-minute test, and candidates cannot go back. Code runs against hidden cases on HireValid's servers, and the cases and solutions do not reach the browser. Pastes into the editor are recorded. HireValid also records signals such as time away from the test tab and answers faster than a question can be read. The employer can review an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; neither decides on its own. See the candidate-friendly hiring guide for broader hiring context.

Use the score as evidence
Treat the score as one signal: it reflects the share of hidden cases passed on a single task, so it cannot show every aspect of a candidate's coding. Review the submitted code and discuss its behavior in a structured interview. You might pair this test with Clean Code, Object Oriented Programming, or the Software Engineer test when those skills also matter to the role. The result is provisional because it rests on one problem; reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed the test.
Structured interview prompts
Walk me through how the data in your stack or queue changed on one of the task's examples.
Listen for a clear walkthrough of how data changes during the task and how the candidate checks matching and edge cases.
What would you check if your solution passed the ordinary cases but failed an edge case?
Listen for a concrete debugging approach tied to the task's stated behavior, rather than an unsupported guess about the hidden tests.
How would your approach change if the problem involved processing jobs in line?
Listen for reasoning about the order jobs are handled and how that choice fits the prompt.
What tradeoffs did you consider in your submitted solution?
Listen for an explanation grounded in the candidate's implementation and the task requirements.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Tasks are stated in plain US English with worked examples and need no knowledge of any industry, place or culture. Each task can be solved in any of the six languages offered, with the language's standard library, and hidden cases check only behavior the statement spells out, including how edge cases are handled.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: the test is one task, so a score rests on a single problem; reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A single programming task, solved in 35 minutes, where the candidate writes a function whose natural solution keeps data in a stack, a queue or a double-ended queue: matching nested symbols, simulating a line of jobs, evaluating an expression, or finding the next larger value. The code runs against hidden test cases, and the score is the share of cases it passes. Candidates may write in Python, JavaScript, Java, C#, C++ or Go.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- 1 practice task, 10 minutes, before the timed test.
- Taken on a desktop or laptop computer.

الأسئلة الشائعة
What does the Coding: Stacks and Queues test ask candidates to do?+
It presents one coding task in which the natural solution uses a stack, queue, or double-ended queue. A candidate writes a function for a stated problem, such as evaluating an expression or simulating a line of jobs. The code is checked against hidden cases, and the score is the share it passes.
Which roles and seniority fit the Coding: Stacks and Queues test?+
The test is intermediate and is intended for software engineers, backend and full stack developers, and other programming roles that call for everyday use of last-in-first-out and first-in-first-out structures. Consider whether that level and day-to-day work match the role you are hiring for.
How does the Coding: Stacks and Queues test handle fairness?+
Tasks use plain US English and worked examples, and need no knowledge of an industry, place, or culture. Candidates can solve them in any of the six offered languages using the language's standard library. Hidden cases check only behavior described in the task, including edge cases.
What should candidates know about the Coding: Stacks and Queues test setup?+
The test takes 35 minutes, has one question, and is desktop-only. Candidates cannot go back, and no aids are allowed. A separate practice set has one question and takes 10 minutes. The practice set is distinct from the hiring test.
