Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

Roles this test fits

Sales roles with some experience or strong early promise: account executives, business development and sales development representatives, inside sales, account managers and customer-facing roles with sales targets.

What the sales aptitude test shows that a resume does not

  1. How they talk with buyers

A resume lists quotas and titles. The test shows whether a candidate builds trust, asks useful questions and responds to a buyer's concern without pushing.

  2. Whether they sell with sound methods

Questions set in discovery calls, objections and follow-ups show whether a candidate applies sound selling methods rather than persuasion alone.

  3. How they adapt when a deal changes

Deals change shape. The problem solving and adaptability area shows how a candidate responds when a customer or an account moves.

  4. How they read a pipeline

Some questions ask for a quick reading of a small pipeline or account table, the kind of numbers sellers look at every day.

How the sales aptitude test resists AI help

Sales questions hinge on details such as what the buyer said, who decides and what changed in the account, and some ask for a reading of a small pipeline or account table on the screen.

Each candidate gets a different set of questions drawn from large pools, in a different order, with answer options shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, answer keys never leave HireValid's servers, and there is no going back to an earlier question. Timing runs on the server, so a reload returns the same question with only the time that was left. Question text cannot be copied, and a blocked copy is recorded.

Each invitation link is personal and expires. Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast answers are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review; it never decides on its own. With the candidate's consent, the employer can add webcam photos. A live role play makes a good follow-up, because it shows how the candidate sells in real time.

How to use the sales aptitude test result

A strong result shows the candidate recognizes good discovery, handles objections without pushing and adapts when a deal changes. It does not show whether they can do this live, on the phone, under pressure. Treat it as one piece of evidence, never the decision.

Read it next to a structured role play: give every candidate you are considering the same short brief, a buyer profile and one objection, and run a 10-minute call scored on the same criteria for everyone: questions asked, listening, handling the objection and agreeing a next step. Add a short written task too, since sellers write as much as they talk, such as an opening message to a buyer based on a brief. Finish with a structured interview, and decide how much each part counts before you see any results.

Interview questions to follow the sales aptitude test

  1. Tell me about a prospect who showed interest but gave you no next step. What did you do?

Listen for a useful question or offer that moved things on, without pressure or giving up too soon.

  2. Walk me through how you prepare for a first call with a new buyer.

Listen for research on the buyer's situation and questions planned around their needs, not a script.

  3. A buyer tells you a competitor is cheaper. How do you respond?

Listen for finding out what the buyer is comparing and what matters to them before talking about price.

  4. Tell me about a time you decided a prospect was not a good fit.

Listen for honesty with the buyer, a polite close and a note of the reason for the team.

Who should use this sales aptitude test?

Use the sales aptitude test for sales roles with some experience or strong early promise: sales development and business development representatives, inside sales, account executives, account managers and other customer-facing roles with sales targets. It fits sales development rep hiring well.

For SDRs, weight the parts of the result that matter for opening conversations: communication and relationship building, and the sales techniques used in discovery and follow-up. For account executives and account managers, the same test is a useful starting point, but the role play and interview should go further: running a full discovery call, handling several objections, and agreeing a concrete next step with a buyer. A short written recap email makes a good extra work sample.

The questions use varied industries and buyer roles, percentages and unit counts in place of prices, and no local business customs, so the test does not ask about your product. That keeps it fair to career changers from customer service, hospitality or other people-facing work, who often make strong sellers. Teach your product after hiring.

Treat it as a sales aptitude assessment of how someone sells today, read beside their track record and a structured role play.

Sales aptitude test or sales personality questionnaire?

The test is not a personality questionnaire. A personality questionnaire asks people to describe themselves, for example how outgoing or competitive they are. The test asks them to handle realistic selling moments, each with a best answer, and scores how they communicate with buyers, apply selling methods and adapt.

The difference matters because extroversion is not a reliable stand-in for selling. A rep who pushes every prospect to a meeting fills the calendar with poor-fit calls; a rep who asks good questions, listens and moves on from poor fits builds pipeline that converts. Questions set in discovery calls, objections and account reviews show which habits a candidate brings.

Do not use accent, cultural style or confidence as proxies for sales ability either. They are easy to notice in an interview and poor predictors of how someone treats a buyer. A test with the same kind of questions for everyone, followed by a role play scored on the same criteria, keeps attention on the work. The guide to pre-employment testing explains how to combine the two fairly.

Some employers call this kind of test a sales skills test. Whatever the name, the result is evidence for a person to read, not a decision.

How to design a fair sales role play

A structured role play is the best follow-up to the test, but only if it is the same for every candidate. Here is a simple design that works for most sales hiring.

  1. Write one buyer brief: company size, the buyer's role, a likely problem and one objection they will raise.
  2. Brief the person playing the buyer so they respond consistently, including when to raise the objection.
  3. Give candidates five minutes to prepare with the brief, and tell them what you will score.
  4. Run a ten-minute call and score four things on a 1 to 4 scale: questions asked, listening, handling the objection and agreeing a next step.
  5. Ask one reflection question afterwards: what would you do differently?

Keep accent, confidence and cultural style out of the scoring; they are poor proxies for selling. Two people scoring independently and then comparing notes is worth the extra minutes for important hires. A role play built this way is a fair work sample that sits naturally next to the test result.

Fairness and accommodations

Scenarios use varied industries, buyer roles and names from many backgrounds, with buyers and sellers of different genders, ages and origins and no stereotypes about who buys or sells. Questions avoid currency symbols, sports, idioms and local business customs, and use percentages and unit counts in place of prices. The reading level is kept plain so the test measures sales judgment, not reading speed. Any arithmetic is light enough for scratch paper, which every candidate may use.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What is on the sales aptitude test?+

Fifteen questions set in realistic selling moments: discovery calls, objections, follow-ups, account reviews and deals that change shape. Some ask for a quick reading of a small pipeline or account table. Questions are single-choice or multiple-select, and the result covers communication and relationship building, sales techniques and strategy, and problem solving and adaptability.

How long does the sales aptitude test take?+

Ten minutes for 15 questions, at an intermediate level. Before the timed questions, candidates get a practice set of 4 questions in 4 minutes. There is no going back to an earlier question, and the test can be taken on a phone as well as a computer. That leaves the role play and interview for the candidates you are considering.

Can candidates use a calculator in the sales aptitude test?+

Scratch paper is the aid every candidate may use. Any arithmetic, such as reading a small pipeline or account table, is kept light enough to work out on paper, so the test measures sales judgment rather than calculation.

Is a sales aptitude test the same as a sales personality test?+

No. A personality test asks people to describe themselves, for example how outgoing they are. The test asks them to handle realistic selling situations, each with a best answer. Extroversion is not a reliable stand-in for sales ability, so a test like this and a structured role play usually tell you more about the job.

Can career changers do well on the sales aptitude test?+

Yes. The questions use varied industries and plain language, with no local business customs, so candidates from customer service, hospitality or other people-facing work can show how they communicate with buyers and adapt. The role play then shows how that holds up in a live conversation.

Should I hire salespeople on the sales aptitude test score alone?+

No. Selling happens live, so the score is one piece of evidence. Read it with a structured role play scored on the same criteria for every candidate, a short written outreach task and a structured interview. Decide how much each part counts before you see any results, and keep the decision with the people hiring.
