See Japanese in context

  1. Look beyond a resume

A resume may describe language experience, but this test gives you evidence from questions on grammar, vocabulary, sentence building, reading, and listening. Every question is written in Japanese, from short workplace texts to short spoken exchanges that play once.

  2. Use one focused check

The 12-minute test covers four Japanese sub-skills in one sitting, with 20 questions written in Japanese. That gives you a focused first look before deciding which candidates should move to a work sample or interview.

  3. Match the test to the role

Use the CEFR-aligned estimate from A2 to C1 as evidence to review alongside the language demands of the opening. It can help you decide what to probe next for customer, sales, account, coordination, office, editorial, writing, or content roles.

  4. Keep the measure clear

The assessment focuses on Japanese language tasks in workplace and everyday settings. It does not test speaking or free writing, so a separate work sample is useful when either is part of the job.

Question and timing controls

Each candidate gets a different set drawn from large question pools, with a different order for each attempt and shuffled answer options. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the time left, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Questions cannot be copied or selected; a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Each invitation link is personal and expires. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline summarize those signals for employer review. The score does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Treat the score as evidence to review

Use the CEFR-aligned estimate as one piece of evidence, not as a verdict or a decision by itself. The test gives a short estimate from A2 to C1; it is not a formal qualification, and it does not measure speaking or free writing. Review the estimate alongside a work sample built around Japanese tasks from the role, such as responding to a short customer situation or making sense of a short workplace text. Then use a structured interview to ask every candidate the same job-related questions. For a role such as a Customer Support Agent, consider pairing this language check with a work sample that reflects the role’s Japanese use. You can also review the candidate-friendly hiring guide when planning the process.

结构化面试问题

  1. Tell me about a time you explained something to a customer or colleague in Japanese. How did you choose your level of politeness?

Listen for a specific situation, the candidate's own actions, and how they matched polite or honorific forms to the person they were speaking with. Ask every candidate the same question.

  2. Describe a Japanese message or document you had to act on at work. How did you make sure you understood it correctly?

Listen for how the candidate read for the key details, what they checked or asked about, and what they did next.

  3. Walk me through how you handle a phone call or meeting in Japanese when someone speaks quickly or indirectly.

Listen for concrete steps, such as confirming the main point or asking a clarifying question, rather than a general claim about fluency.

  4. How would you reply in Japanese to a customer who is unhappy about a late delivery? Please answer in Japanese.

Listen for a clear, polite reply that fits the situation. This adds the speaking evidence the test does not collect, so review it separately from the estimate.

Match the estimate to the role

The test is intended for roles that use Japanese with customers, colleagues, or readers. Its stated role range includes customer support, sales, account and customer success management, coordination, and office work. At higher levels, it may suit editors, writers, and content creators. The Japanese proficiency test reports an estimate from A2 to C1, so compare that evidence with the actual Japanese tasks in your opening rather than treating a level as a hiring rule. Explore role pages such as Sales Development Rep and Office Administrator when considering where a language check may fit.

What the test does and does not cover

Questions use standard Japanese in workplace and everyday situations. They do not require knowledge of Japanese holidays, places, or customs beyond the language itself. Names come from Japan and many other backgrounds, and polite and honorific forms appear only as used at work. Listening questions need sound, and every recording plays once at the same speed for every candidate. Speaking and free writing are not tested. The estimate is based on a short test, not a formal qualification. Reliability is provisional: it will be reported once 200 candidates have completed the test, and level cut scores are set against the norming panel’s results. Compare the language coverage with the English Proficiency test or browse the test library if you are weighing other assessments.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use standard Japanese in workplace and everyday situations, with no regional dialect and no knowledge of Japanese holidays, places or customs needed beyond the language itself. Names come from Japan and from many other backgrounds, and polite and honorific forms appear only as they are used at work. The listening questions need sound and play each recording once, at the same speed for every candidate. The level is a CEFR-aligned estimate from a short test, not a formal qualification, and speaking and free writing are not tested.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it, and the level cut scores are set against the norming panel's results.

常见问题

What does the Japanese proficiency test measure?+

It measures grammar and vocabulary, sentence building, reading, and listening in workplace Japanese. All 20 questions are written in Japanese and take 12 minutes to complete. Candidates read short workplace texts, listen to short spoken exchanges and build sentences, choosing the right answer or every right answer. The result is a CEFR-aligned estimate from A2 to C1.

Which roles is the Japanese Proficiency test for?+

It is for hiring roles that use Japanese with customers, colleagues, or readers. The stated roles include customer support, sales, account and customer success management, coordination, and office roles. At higher levels, it may fit editors, writers, and content creators. Select it when Japanese language use matters to the job, then review the estimate against that role’s tasks.

Is HireValid’s Japanese Proficiency test an exam or a qualification?+

No. This is a test employers use when hiring. It gives a CEFR-aligned estimate from A2 to C1 based on a short assessment, not a formal qualification or an equivalence to a named exam. It is not presented as exam preparation. Use its result as evidence to review with other job-related information.

Does the Japanese Proficiency test check speaking or writing?+

No. The test covers grammar and vocabulary, sentence building, reading, and listening. It does not test speaking or free writing. If either is central to the role, add a relevant work sample or structured interview task and assess that evidence separately from the test estimate.

How long is the Japanese Proficiency test, and can candidates go back?+

The test has 20 questions and a 12-minute time limit. Candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Each question is delivered one at a time, and the server controls the timing. If a candidate reloads the page, the same question returns with only the time that remained.

What should I know about the Japanese Proficiency test’s listening questions?+

Listening questions use short spoken exchanges and need sound. Each recording plays once at the same speed for every candidate. Consider letting candidates know in advance that sound is needed. The assessment measures listening comprehension, not speaking ability.

How should I interpret a Japanese Proficiency test score?+

Treat the CEFR-aligned estimate as one signal for a person to review, not as a pass mark or a decision on its own. It ranges from A2 to C1 and comes from a short test. Reliability reporting is provisional until 200 candidates have completed the test. Pair the result with role-specific evidence and a structured interview.
