Roles this test fits

Roles that use written English at work: customer support, administration, sales, hospitality, operations and office roles, especially where English is not every candidate's first language.

What the test shows that a resume does not

  1. Reading workplace texts

A resume can say fluent English. The reading questions show whether a candidate understands short workplace texts, including what they imply.

  2. Grammar in context

Grammar questions show whether a candidate uses English grammar correctly in workplace sentences.

  3. Workplace vocabulary

Vocabulary questions show whether a candidate knows the words used in everyday work messages and documents.

  4. A shared level to talk about

The CEFR-aligned estimate, from A2 to C1, gives you a common way to describe a level instead of "good English".

What you get for each candidate

How this test resists AI assistance

Each candidate gets a different set of questions drawn from large pools, and the question order and answer options are shuffled. Questions are served one at a time from the server, the answer keys never reach the browser, and there is no going back to an earlier question. Timing runs on the server, so a reload returns the same question with the time left.

Question text cannot be copied, and a blocked copy is recorded. Each candidate uses a personal invitation link that expires. Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast answers are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review. The signals never decide anything on their own. Employers can also turn on webcam photos, taken only with the candidate's consent.

How to use the result with a work sample and interview

The result is a CEFR-aligned estimate with a score for reading, grammar and vocabulary. Read it as evidence about the English the role actually uses, never as a decision on its own. Asking for more English than the job needs narrows your pool and adds nothing to your decision, and a lower level says nothing about a candidate's reasoning or skill.

Reading and grammar are only part of communication. Pair the test with a short work sample in the language of the job: a customer email to answer for a support role, or a meeting summary for a coordinator. The test does not cover listening or speaking, so the interview is where you hear spoken English. Use a structured interview with the same questions for everyone, and judge whether the candidate explains their work clearly enough for the role, not whether their accent or style matches yours. If a candidate's test result and their written or spoken English in the interview differ a lot, ask a follow-up question.

Interview questions to pair with the test

  1. Walk me through how you would reply to a customer who misunderstood one of our emails.

Listen for a clear, polite explanation and a check that the customer now understands.

  2. Tell me about a time a written instruction at work was unclear. What did you do?

Listen for asking a clarifying question rather than guessing.

  3. How do you make sure a message you write is understood by someone outside your team?

Strong answers mention plain words, short sentences and checking back.

  4. Describe a recent piece of work you are proud of.

Use this to hear spoken English on a familiar topic. Judge clarity and whether the message gets across, not accent.

Who should use this English proficiency test?

Use this English proficiency test for employment when written English is part of the role: support agents answering customers, sales reps writing to prospects, virtual assistants coordinating with clients, hospitality and operations staff reading instructions, and office roles on international teams where English is the shared language. It is especially useful where English is not every candidate's first language.

It fits naturally into the customer support agent, sales development rep, virtual assistant and general hire roles, next to tests of the role's core skills.

Think about the English the job genuinely uses. A warehouse role with written safety instructions uses different English from a role writing proposals to clients. Write the level of English the work involves into the job description, and read each candidate's estimate against what the work really needs. If the role produces a lot of written work, add a writing test from the test library.

What a CEFR-aligned estimate means

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or CEFR, describes language ability on a six-level scale, from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. Aligning results to that scale gives you a shared vocabulary: you can say a role needs comfortable B2 reading rather than "good English".

This test reports a CEFR-aligned estimate from A2 to C1. A2 or below means the candidate understands short, simple texts and everyday phrases on familiar work topics. B1 means the main points of clear, routine workplace texts. B2 means detailed workplace texts, including some inference. C1 or above means longer, denser texts and implied meaning, with precise grammar and a wide vocabulary.

The level is an estimate from a short test, not a formal qualification, and it should not be used for immigration, university entry or any purpose that requires an accredited exam. If a candidate already holds an English exam result, it is useful context, but many capable candidates do not, so a short test taken by everyone gives you comparable evidence without asking applicants to pay for an exam.

Business English test vs general English test

A general English test often uses everyday topics such as travel or hobbies. A business English test uses workplace situations: emails, schedules, policies and customer requests. For hiring, the second is more relevant, because it samples the English the person will actually use.

This test uses workplace texts, grammar and vocabulary in standard US English, avoiding idioms, slang and local references, so it behaves like a business English test. It does not replace a writing task, though. Someone can read and choose correct grammar comfortably yet still write long, unclear emails. If the role produces written work, add a writing task; if it mostly reads instructions and replies in short messages, the test plus an interview is usually enough.

A useful grammar test for hiring focuses on the structures that cause real misunderstandings at work, such as tense, agreement and prepositions of time, rather than rare exceptions.

Remote and international teams often work mostly in writing, so a misread message can cost more. Many strong remote colleagues work in their second or third language, and clear, accurate messages matter more than idiomatic style.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use workplace situations and standard US English, avoiding idioms, slang, local references and points where varieties of English disagree, with names from many backgrounds. The level is a CEFR-aligned estimate from a short test, not a formal qualification, and listening and speaking are not tested.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it, and the level cut scores are set against the norming panel's results.

常见问题

What is on the HireValid English proficiency test?+

Twenty-four single choice questions in 12 minutes, covering reading short workplace texts, grammar and vocabulary. The score maps to a CEFR-aligned estimate from A2 to C1. Questions use workplace situations and standard US English, without idioms, slang or local references. The test does not assess listening or speaking, which you can check in the interview if the role needs them.

What English level does a job need?+

It depends on the work. Roles that read short instructions use less English than roles that write to customers or negotiate in English. Describe the English the work involves using the CEFR scale in your job description, and read each candidate's estimate as one piece of evidence beside a work sample and interview. Asking for more than the job uses narrows your pool for no benefit.

Is the English proficiency test fair to non-native speakers?+

It is designed to be, when the English it looks for matches the job. Questions avoid idioms, slang, local references and points where varieties of English disagree, and names come from many backgrounds. Language level says nothing about intelligence or professional skill. Offer accommodations such as extra time where appropriate, and judge spoken English in the interview on clarity rather than accent.

Does the English proficiency test cover listening and speaking?+

No. It covers reading, grammar and workplace vocabulary. If a role depends on spoken English, such as phone support, assess it in a structured interview or a short role play, using the same scenario and criteria for every candidate. Judge clarity and whether the message gets across, not how closely an accent matches yours.

Can I use the English proficiency test result as a formal language qualification?+

No. The result is a CEFR-aligned estimate from a short hiring test, not a formal qualification. It should not be used for immigration, university entry or any purpose that requires an accredited exam. Use it to compare candidates for a job on the same workplace English, alongside a work sample and interview.

How long does the HireValid English proficiency test take?+

The assessment has 24 questions and a 12-minute time limit. Candidates can try a separate practice set with four questions in four minutes. Every question is single choice, and candidates cannot return to an earlier question.

What does the HireValid English proficiency test estimate from A2 to C1?+

It gives a CEFR-aligned estimate based on reading, grammar and vocabulary in workplace English. It is a short English level test for hiring, not a formal language qualification, and it says nothing about listening or speaking. Use the level alongside examples of the candidate's written work and a structured interview.
