简短回答
The Coding: Debugging test is an advanced, hands-on task: candidates find and correct faults in a program that breaks a written specification. It measures how they read unfamiliar code, trace faulty behavior and make repairs without breaking what works. Use it when hiring experienced software engineers, backend or full-stack developers, web developers or programmers who maintain others' code.
测量内容
Reading unfamiliar code against a written specification, tracing where its behavior goes wrong, and repairing it without breaking what already works.
Debugging to a specification
Candidates compare unfamiliar code with a written specification, trace where behavior breaks it, and repair the faults while preserving working behavior.
Question formats
Coding tasks
The candidate: Writes or fixes code in an editor and runs it against examples.
You see: Working code, checked against hidden test cases, not just knowledge of syntax.
1 task in 35 minutes.
Roles this test fits
Experienced software engineers, backend and full-stack developers, web developers and programmers who maintain, review or extend code written by others.
Evidence from a real debugging task
See repairs against clear requirements
Candidates work from a written specification with edge cases spelled out, so you can review how they turn stated requirements into a working repair.
Review partial repairs fairly
Hidden test cases check the result, and each fault fixed counts on its own. A partial repair earns partial credit rather than hiding the work completed.
Compare language choices on equal terms
Each task has the same faults in every offered language. A language-specific trick is never the fault to find, and no library beyond the language's standard one is needed.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the task is protected
Each candidate receives a different task drawn from large question pools. The browser shows one question at a time; answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 35-minute timer runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and blocked copy attempts are recorded. Code runs against hidden test cases on HireValid’s servers; the cases and solutions do not reach the browser, and pastes into the editor are recorded. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab and pastes in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. It does not decide on its own.

Treat the score as evidence to review
The score is the share of hidden test cases passed by the repaired program, with each fault fixed counting on its own. Review the code as a work sample alongside the result, then use a structured interview to ask how the candidate approached the specification and protected behavior that already worked. Do not use the score alone. For related context, see the Software Engineer test and Clean Code.
结构化面试问题
How would you approach a program that appears to work but fails parts of its written specification?
Listen for a clear process for comparing behavior with requirements and locating where the behavior diverges.
Tell me about a repair you made to code written by someone else. How did you avoid breaking behavior that already worked?
Listen for careful tracing, specific checks of existing behavior, and a reasoned account of the repair.
When a specification includes edge cases, how do you use them to guide debugging?
Listen for a connection between the stated edge cases, the code paths involved, and how the candidate would check a repair.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Each task is written once and given the same faults in every language offered, so no language is easier than another. A language-specific trick is never the fault to find. Specifications use everyday data such as orders, bookings, logs and schedules, with no money symbols, idioms or local knowledge, and spell out every edge case the hidden tests check. No library beyond the language's standard one is needed.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it. The score is the share of hidden test cases the repaired program passes, so each fault fixed counts on its own.
Test details
One hands-on task. The candidate gets a written specification and a working-looking program that breaks it in several places, and must find and correct the faults so the program does what the specification says. The candidate works in Python, JavaScript, Java, C#, C++ or Go, whichever of these the employer allows. Hidden test cases check the result, so a partial repair earns partial credit.
- Questions are in English.
- Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
- 1 practice task, 10 minutes, before the timed test.
- Taken on a desktop or laptop computer.

常见问题
Which roles suit the Coding: Debugging test?+
It is designed for experienced software engineers, backend and full-stack developers, web developers, and programmers who maintain, review, or extend code written by others. Its advanced level is intended for experienced hires, not junior roles. For guidance on choosing an assessment, see the [pre-employment testing guide](/guides/pre-employment-testing).
How does the Coding: Debugging test keep language choice fair?+
Each task is written once and has the same faults in every language offered. The fault is never a language-specific trick. The specification uses everyday data such as orders, bookings, logs, and schedules, and spells out every edge case checked by hidden tests.
Can candidates use scratch paper during the Coding: Debugging test?+
Yes, scratch paper is allowed, which helps when tracing a program's behavior by hand. The candidate works in whichever of the offered languages the employer allows, and the test needs a computer.
What practice set comes with the Coding: Debugging test?+
The practice set contains one question and takes 10 minutes. The hiring test itself is one hands-on coding task with a 35-minute time limit. The task uses a written specification and a program with faults for the candidate to find and correct.
