简短回答
The Ruby on Rails assessment is a timed, 15-question check of intermediate Rails work. It measures Active Record and data modeling, controllers and routing, views and helpers, and wider app concerns such as jobs, caching and security. Use it to screen Rails and full-stack developers, backend engineers moving onto Rails, or technical leads hiring for Rails work.
测量内容
Practical knowledge of the Rails framework: Active Record, controllers and routing, views and helpers, and app-wide concerns such as jobs, caching and security.
Active Record and data modeling
Checks knowledge of modeling data with Active Record.
Controllers and routing
Covers wiring requests through routes and controllers.
Views and helpers
Covers rendering views with templates and helpers.
Jobs, caching, security and app structure
Checks work with background jobs, caching, security, tests and app structure.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Rails and full-stack developers with some production experience, backend engineers moving onto a Rails codebase, and technical leads screening for Rails work.

Look beyond a resume
See how a candidate reads short Ruby snippets, route files and templates, and reasons about what they do or how to fix them.
Rails 7 conventions, not house style
Snippets follow widely used Rails 7 conventions rather than one team's habits or a single gem, so candidates from different Rails codebases start on equal terms.
Beyond models and views
A sub-skill on background jobs, caching, security and app structure shows whether a candidate thinks about the whole app, not only individual requests.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Assessment controls and review signals
Each candidate gets a different question set from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time; answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. Invitations are personal and expire, and a finished assessment cannot be taken again. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. It does not make the hiring decision. With consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as one hiring signal
Review the score alongside a work sample that asks the candidate to work with a small Rails feature, then use a structured interview to explore their choices. The score is evidence for your review, not a decision on its own. For additional context, see our pre-employment testing guide and how we build our tests.
Follow up on Rails decisions
How would you trace a request from a route to the rendered response in a Rails app?
Listen for a clear account of how routes and controllers connect, and how the response reaches a view.
How would you model a relationship between two records for a booking feature?
Listen for a practical Active Record approach and how the candidate would represent the data.
What would you consider when moving a slow task out of a web request?
Listen for relevant background-job considerations and how they fit into the wider app.

Fairness and accommodations
Questions test Rails behavior in short snippets about neutral domains such as orders, bookings, tasks and libraries, with names from many backgrounds and no money, sports, holidays or local knowledge. Reading is kept short and plain so the test measures framework knowledge rather than English, and every snippet follows widely used Rails 7 conventions instead of one team's habits or a single gem.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A timed check of day-to-day Ruby on Rails work: modeling data with Active Record, wiring requests through routes and controllers, rendering views with templates and helpers, and handling the wider app with background jobs, caching, security and tests. Most questions show a short snippet of Ruby, a route file or a template and ask what it does, what goes wrong or which change fixes it.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 3 minutes, before the timed test.

常见问题
How does the Ruby on Rails assessment keep questions fair?+
Questions use short snippets about neutral topics such as orders, bookings, tasks and libraries. Names come from many backgrounds, with no money, sports, holiday or local knowledge references. Reading is short and plain, and snippets follow widely used Rails 7 conventions rather than one team's habits or a single gem.
What is included in the Ruby on Rails assessment practice set?+
Candidates can try a practice set of four questions with a three-minute limit before taking the 10-minute assessment. The assessment itself has 15 multiple-choice questions in English. No aids are allowed, and candidates cannot go back to earlier questions.
Who should take the Ruby on Rails assessment?+
It is an intermediate-level screen for Rails and full-stack developers with some production experience, backend engineers moving onto a Rails codebase, and technical leads screening for Rails work. It assumes day-to-day Rails experience rather than first steps with the framework.
What does the Ruby on Rails assessment score tell an employer?+
You see a score for each of the four areas, so a candidate strong on Active Record but weaker on jobs, caching and security shows up clearly. Use those areas to plan a Rails work sample and interview, not as a standalone decision. For other web frameworks, see the [Django](/tests/programming-skills/django) and [Laravel](/tests/programming-skills/laravel) tests.
