Roles this test fits

Roles where small mistakes are costly: data entry, administration, order processing, bookkeeping support, logistics and customer operations.

What the test shows that a resume does not

  1. Matching records exactly

Many resumes say detail oriented. The matching questions show whether a candidate actually notices a swapped digit or a changed date when comparing two records.

  2. Applying rules to lists

Many errors at work come from misreading a rule, such as a threshold or an exception. The rule application questions show whether a candidate follows the rule as written.

  3. Spotting errors in tables

Error detection questions show whether a candidate finds the entry that does not fit, the kind of check that keeps orders, schedules and stock lists accurate.

  4. Comparing pictures

Visual comparison questions show whether a candidate finds the differences between two pictures, a skill a resume cannot show at all.

How this test resists AI assistance

Each candidate gets a different set of questions drawn from large pools, and the question order and answer options are shuffled. Questions are served one at a time from the server, the answer keys never reach the browser, and there is no going back to an earlier question. Timing runs on the server, so a reload returns the same question with the time left.

Question text cannot be copied, and a blocked copy is recorded. Each candidate uses a personal invitation link that expires. Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast answers are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review. The signals never decide anything on their own. Employers can also turn on webcam photos, taken only with the candidate's consent.

How to use the result with a work sample and interview

Read the result as one piece of evidence, never as a decision on its own. The report shows the score for each sub-skill, so look at the pattern: a candidate strong on matching records but weaker on applying rules needs a different conversation from one who is the other way round.

Pair the test with a short, realistic work sample. For an administrator, give a few invoices and a purchase order list and ask which invoices do not match. For a support agent, give a customer email and an order record with a small discrepancy, and ask for the reply. Then use a structured interview with the same questions for every candidate, so the test, the task and the conversation can confirm each other.

Interview questions to pair with the test

  1. Tell me about an error you caught before it caused a problem. How did you notice it?

Listen for a specific example and a checking habit, not a general claim to be careful.

  2. How do you check your own work before you send or submit it?

Strong answers describe a routine, such as checking references character by character or comparing totals against the source.

  3. What do you do when you find a mistake after something has already been sent?

Listen for owning the error, telling the people affected and fixing the cause, not only the symptom.

  4. When an instruction has a rule with an exception, how do you make sure you apply it correctly?

Listen for rereading the rule, checking edge cases and asking when something is unclear.

Who should use this attention to detail test?

Use this attention to detail test for roles where small errors are expensive: administrators entering invoices, support agents copying order numbers, operations staff matching deliveries to purchase orders, and bookkeeping support staff checking entries. It is an entry-level test with 20 questions in 8 minutes, and no specialist knowledge is needed.

It fits naturally into the customer support agent, office administrator, data entry clerk and bookkeeper roles, next to tests of judgment, language and tools.

It is also a practical accuracy test for employment in data entry, logistics and customer operations, where much of the work is comparing one record against another. For roles that mostly involve big-picture work and rarely touch records, it adds less, and a test of judgment or communication usually tells you more.

Attention to detail assessment vs proofreading test

A proofreading test checks spelling, grammar and punctuation in a passage. An attention to detail assessment is broader: it checks whether someone notices mismatches in any kind of information, such as reference numbers, dates, list entries and pictures.

This test covers four kinds of care: matching records, applying simple rules to lists, spotting errors in tables and comparing two pictures. It uses everyday records such as orders, schedules and stock lists, and keeps the reading level simple, so it measures care rather than language.

For most administrative and support roles, that broader skill matters more. Few of those roles involve editing prose, but nearly all involve copying references, checking entries and following rules with thresholds or exceptions. If the role does involve editing published text, such as marketing or communications work, add a writing test from the test library alongside this one.

How to design an attention to detail work sample

A good work sample for accuracy is short, realistic and has a known answer key. It should take 10 to 15 minutes and use the kind of records the person will handle in the job.

Here is a simple structure that works for most administrative and support roles:

  1. Pick two related records, such as a purchase order and an invoice, or a customer email and an order history.
  2. Plant four to six differences of different kinds: a swapped digit, a wrong date, a missing line, an entry that breaks a stated rule.
  3. Write a clear instruction: list every difference you find and say what you would do about each one.
  4. Mark it against the key, giving credit both for finding each difference and for a sensible next step.

Keep the planted errors realistic. Tricks that would never happen in your business test puzzle-solving, not the care the job needs. Give the same sample to every shortlisted candidate so the results are comparable, and offer the same accommodations as for the test.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use everyday records such as orders, schedules and stock lists, with no money symbols, idioms or local knowledge. Names come from many backgrounds, dates are written with the month as a word, and the reading level is kept simple so the test measures care rather than language. In the picture questions no difference is a change of color alone, so every difference can be seen without full color vision.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

What is on the HireValid attention to detail test?+

Twenty short questions in 8 minutes, covering four sub-skills: matching records, applying rules to lists, spotting errors in tables and comparing two pictures. Formats are single choice, multiple select and numeric answers. Each question has its own 30-second timer, so care matters as much as speed. No specialist knowledge is needed, and questions use everyday records such as orders, schedules and stock lists.

Which jobs use an attention to detail assessment?+

Roles where small mistakes are costly: data entry, administration, order processing, bookkeeping support, logistics and customer operations. For roles focused on strategy or relationships, the test adds less evidence, and a judgment or communication test usually tells you more.

Is the attention to detail test fair to candidates with dyslexia or color vision differences?+

The reading level is kept simple so the test measures care rather than language, and in the picture questions no difference is a change of color alone, so every difference can be seen without full color vision. Offer extra time as an accommodation and make it easy to request one before starting. If the role does not need fast visual checking, give more weight to a work sample.

Why is the attention to detail test timed?+

A time limit keeps the test short and comparable for every candidate, but it also mixes some speed into what is mainly a measure of accuracy. If the job allows time to check work, keep that in mind when reading the result, and grant extra time freely as an accommodation. If the job is genuinely fast-paced, such as live order entry, working accurately under time pressure is part of the skill.

How can candidates prepare for the attention to detail test?+

Candidates can try the practice set, which has 4 questions and takes 3 minutes. In the test, they can check references and dates character by character rather than reading them as a whole. They should also read list rules carefully, since different thresholds or exceptions can change which entries fit. Working steadily can help avoid mistakes caused by rushing.

What does the attention to detail test measure beyond proofreading?+

A proofreading test focuses on spelling, grammar and punctuation in written passages. This assessment also checks matching records, using rules on lists, spotting table errors and comparing pictures. Those tasks can be relevant in entry-level administration, order processing, logistics and customer operations, where work may involve checking information that is not prose.
