简短回答

The Ansible test is a 10-minute, 15-question check of practical automation at an intermediate level. Candidates read short playbooks, inventories and templates to determine variable values, task order, role or module effects, and rendered output. It is intended for DevOps and platform engineers, site reliability engineers, administrators, cloud engineers and developers who maintain Ansible automation.

测量内容

Practical Ansible skill: inventories and variable precedence, roles and modules, how playbooks run, and Jinja2 templating, read from real snippets.

Hosts, groups and variable precedence

Candidates work out which value applies when hosts, groups and variables appear in an inventory or playbook.

Reusable roles, collections and module use

Questions ask candidates to interpret what reusable roles, collections and modules change in an automation snippet.

How playbooks run: connections, ordering and control

Candidates reason through connections, task ordering and control to determine how a playbook runs.

Jinja2 templating and data transformation

Candidates read Jinja2 expressions and work out what data they produce and what a template renders.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

DevOps and platform engineers, site reliability engineers, system and network administrators, cloud engineers and software developers who write or maintain Ansible automation.

See practical reasoning beyond a resume

  1. Check snippet reading

A resume can list Ansible experience, but this test shows how candidates read playbooks, inventories and templates to work out their effects.

  2. Focus follow-up

The results can help you focus review on variable precedence, task order, module effects or template output that matters to your role.

  3. Reasoning, not release trivia

Every fact a question needs is shown in its snippet, and behavior that differs between recent ansible-core releases is left out, so results reflect how a candidate reads the automation.

Test integrity signals for employer review

Each candidate receives a different set of questions drawn from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded. Personal invitation links expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read. The employer reviews an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; neither makes a decision on its own. With candidate consent, random webcam photos can be added.

Use the score as one signal

Review the score alongside a relevant work sample and a structured interview, not on its own. Ask the candidate to explain how they would trace a variable value, follow task order or check rendered template output. Use their reasoning to guide follow-up, rather than treating the score as a verdict. For related hiring needs, see the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) test, Microsoft Azure test and Terraform test.

结构化面试问题

  1. A playbook uses a host variable and a group variable with different values. How would you work out which value applies?

Listen for a clear explanation of how they would inspect the inventory and the values shown in the snippet.

  2. A playbook has several tasks and a connection setting. How would you trace what runs, and in what order?

Look for step-by-step reasoning about the connection, task sequence and control shown in the example.

  3. A role and a module both appear in an automation change. How would you check what each one changes?

Listen for a practical approach to reading the role or module use and explaining its effect from the provided details.

  4. A Jinja2 template produces unexpected output. How would you investigate the data and expression?

Look for reasoning that connects the input data to the expression and the output they expect.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions are built from short code snippets with neutral host, group and file names, so they test reading and reasoning about automation rather than memorized trivia or English fluency. Prose is kept short and plain, every fact a question needs is shown in it, and behavior that differs between recent ansible-core releases is left out.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, timed test of practical Ansible automation at an intermediate level. Candidates read small playbooks, inventories and templates and work out what they do: which value a variable takes, which tasks run and in what order, what a role or module changes, and what a template renders.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

常见问题

Who should take the Ansible test?+

It is designed for intermediate DevOps and platform engineers, site reliability engineers, system and network administrators, cloud engineers, and software developers who write or maintain Ansible automation.

What makes the Ansible test fair for candidates?+

Questions use short snippets with neutral host, group and file names. The details needed to answer are shown, and plain, brief wording focuses the task on reading inventories, playbooks and templates rather than memorized trivia or English fluency.

Can candidates use notes or go back during the Ansible test?+

No aids are allowed, so candidates work from the snippet on the screen. Questions come one at a time, and a candidate cannot return to an earlier question after moving on, so each answer about a variable value, task order or template output is final.

Can candidates try the Ansible test before starting?+

Yes. A separate practice set has four questions and takes four minutes. It gives candidates a chance to see the question experience before the 10-minute hiring test.
