Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Data scientists, data analysts, data engineers, AI and machine learning engineers, reinforcement learning specialists, and game developers who build AI behavior.
What this AI test can add to your hiring process
See applied thinking, not just topic recognition
Candidates work a small case, such as a graph, a payoff table, a few lines of code or a set of rules, and choose the right answer or every right answer. The questions ask them to apply an idea to a small case, which gives you evidence beyond a resume or a list of AI topics.
Focus on core methods
The test covers search and optimization, uncertainty, games and constraints, logic, and planning. Use those signals to decide what to explore further for an intermediate role, rather than treating a general AI label as proof of job-ready ability.
Keep the first check concise
The assessment has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. It can give you a focused set of topics for a follow-up conversation, while leaving the deeper evaluation to your work sample and structured interview.
Give candidates a consistent task
Every question uses multiple choice. Neutral settings include grids, delivery robots, puzzles, and scheduling; scratch paper is allowed. These details make the task concrete without requiring sports knowledge, money symbols, idioms, or local knowledge.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the test handles AI-related integrity signals
Each candidate receives a different set of questions drawn from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading brings back the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Each invitation link is personal and expires, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. HireValid summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. You review the evidence; the system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, you can add webcam photos at random moments. Most questions ask candidates to work a small case, such as a graph, a payoff table, a few lines of code or a set of rules, rather than recall a definition.

Use the score as one hiring signal
Review the score as evidence, not as a verdict or a substitute for your own assessment. No single result should decide whether to hire. Pair it with a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview that gives candidates the same core questions. A sample can show how a person approaches a task relevant to the role; your interview can probe the reasoning behind choices on search, uncertainty, constraints, logic, or planning. Compare what you observe across those steps, and consider the responsibilities of the specific intermediate role. For more on using assessments in a hiring process, see the pre-employment testing guide.
Structured interview questions to follow up
How would you decide which paths to explore first in a search problem with several possible routes?
Listen for a clear explanation of how the candidate frames the goal, compares alternatives, and adjusts their approach as they learn more. Ask them to walk through a specific example rather than recite a method’s definition.
Tell me how you would make a decision when the information available to an AI system is incomplete.
Listen for how the candidate identifies uncertainty, distinguishes known information from assumptions, and explains the tradeoffs behind a choice. Invite them to use a small scenario relevant to the role.
How would you represent the rules in a scheduling problem, and what would you do if no option met every constraint?
Listen for a practical account of how they identify rules and constraints, test possible options, and respond when the requirements conflict. Ask what they would clarify before changing the plan.
How would you plan a sequence of actions for a delivery robot when a route is blocked?
Listen for a step-by-step explanation of the goal, possible actions, and how new information changes the plan. Follow up on how they would check whether the revised sequence still meets the task’s constraints.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Roles and level this assessment fits
This intermediate test is intended for data scientists, data analysts, data engineers, AI and machine learning engineers, reinforcement learning specialists, and game developers who build AI behavior. It focuses on applying core AI methods, not on a particular tool or product. If you are choosing between this assessment and a broader reasoning measure, compare it with Critical Thinking.
What the questions ask candidates to do
A question may present a graph, payoff table, a few lines of code, or a set of rules. Candidates read the prompt and select the right answer, or every right answer. This makes the artificial intelligence assessment about applying a method to a small case, not simply recognizing a term. The test covers search and optimization, reasoning under uncertainty, games and constraint satisfaction, logic and knowledge representation, and planning and robotics. Candidates may use scratch paper, and they cannot go back to an earlier question after moving on.
Choosing a practice set or a related assessment
Candidates can try a practice set of 4 questions in 4 minutes to get familiar with the question format. The practice set is separate from the 15-question, 10-minute assessment. This artificial intelligence skills test is narrower than a general reasoning measure because it focuses on core AI methods. To review how HireValid describes its assessment design, read How we build our tests, or browse the test library for other options.
Fairness and accommodations
Questions use neutral settings such as grids, delivery robots, puzzles and scheduling, with no sports, money symbols, idioms or local knowledge. Game payoffs are given in points, the numbers are small enough to work on scratch paper, and every symbol or term a question relies on is standard in the field and explained where it could be read two ways. Names and scenarios are varied, and scratch paper is allowed for every candidate.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: no norms exist yet, and reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A short, timed check of the ideas that intelligent systems are built on: searching large spaces, acting on uncertain information, choosing moves against an opponent or under constraints, reasoning with logic, and planning sequences of actions. Most questions ask the candidate to apply an idea to a small worked case, such as a graph, a payoff table, a few lines of code or a set of rules, rather than recall a definition.
- Questions are in English.
- Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.
