简短回答
The VMware test is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice assessment of practical VMware vSphere knowledge. It covers building and looking after virtual machines, managing ESXi hosts and clusters through vCenter Server, and setting up virtual networks and datastores. Use it when hiring system administrators, infrastructure or virtualization engineers, DevOps engineers, or server-focused IT support staff.

Virtual machines
Questions cover building and looking after virtual machines in a VMware vSphere environment.
Hosts and vCenter
Questions cover managing ESXi hosts and clusters through vCenter Server.
Networking and storage
Questions cover setting up the virtual networks and datastores that machines depend on.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Roles that build or run virtualized infrastructure: system administrators, systems and infrastructure engineers, virtualization engineers, DevOps engineers and IT support staff who look after servers.
What this VMware test can show
Evidence beyond a resume
See how a candidate reasons about building and looking after virtual machines, rather than relying only on a list of VMware experience.
Check infrastructure judgment
Situation questions and small inventory or settings tables ask what happens, what is wrong, or what to do next with hosts, clusters, networks, and datastores.
A focused hiring step
The 10-minute assessment gives your team a specific discussion point for roles managing virtualized infrastructure, including systems engineers and server-focused IT support staff.
Compare related skills separately
For roles spanning infrastructure tools, consider pairing this assessment with the [Terraform test](/tests/software-skills/terraform) or [Kubernetes test](/tests/software-skills/kubernetes), based on the work the role requires.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Test integrity signals for review
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Question order changes by attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, while answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and blocked copy attempts are recorded in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. The Integrity Score and evidence timeline are for employer review, not an automatic decision. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments. Read how we build our tests.

Use the score as one piece of evidence
Review the score alongside a work sample that reflects the role’s VMware vSphere tasks and a structured interview. Ask each candidate the same job-related questions, and use their answers to explore their reasoning about virtual machines, ESXi hosts, vCenter clusters, networking, and storage. The score should inform a person’s review, never act alone or decide who advances. For roles that also cover cloud operations, compare the role’s needs with the DevOps test and AWS test.
结构化面试问题
A virtual machine is not behaving as expected after a change. How would you investigate what happened and decide what to do next?
Listen for a clear troubleshooting sequence, attention to the VM’s settings, and a reasoned next step based on available evidence.
You need to make a change to an ESXi host in a vCenter cluster. How would you plan and carry it out?
Listen for how the candidate would check the host and cluster context, consider potential effects, and verify the result.
A machine cannot use the network or storage it needs. How would you narrow down where the problem may be?
Listen for a practical approach to checking relevant virtual network and datastore settings, and for clear explanations of the candidate’s choices.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Questions describe everyday infrastructure tasks in plain US English, with no money, local knowledge or company names, and every setting a question depends on is shown in its text or table rather than taken from memory of a particular screen. Behavior that differs between vSphere versions is asked about only when the question names the version, and the test runs on a phone or a computer.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A short, timed set of questions on running a VMware vSphere environment day to day. It covers building and looking after virtual machines, managing ESXi hosts and clusters through vCenter Server, and setting up the virtual networks and datastores that machines depend on. Most questions describe a situation or show a small inventory or settings table and ask what happens, what is wrong, or what to do next.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.
