Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Medical billers and coders, billing analysts, accounts receivable and insurance verification staff, revenue cycle team members and practice managers.

What candidates can show in the test

  1. Applied coding knowledge

A resume can list billing or coding experience, but it does not show how someone uses diagnosis and procedure code information in a short encounter note. The medical billing test uses multiple-choice situations, tables and statements to check application, not just recognition.

  2. A view across billing tasks

One assessment covers code assignment, eligibility, claims and denials, payments and patient balances, and records and privacy. That gives you a focused way to review several parts of the day-to-day work before deciding what to explore in an interview.

  3. A short first screen

The assessment has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. Use it as a brief signal alongside other hiring evidence, rather than spending interview time discovering whether a candidate can work through the basic billing scenarios the questions present.

  4. Questions with needed details

Each question provides the codes, plan terms and figures needed for its task. Candidates can use a calculator and scratch paper, so the assessment focuses on using the information in front of them rather than memorizing one payer's rules.

Question delivery and integrity signals

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server: reloading brings back the same question with only the remaining time. Candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid can summarize signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline. The employer reviews the evidence; it does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as one hiring signal

Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not as a pass mark or a decision. Compare it with a job-relevant work sample, such as reviewing a short billing scenario and asking the candidate to explain their approach. Then use a structured interview with the same core questions for candidates. Consider the specific role and the evidence from all parts of your process before making a hiring decision. For broader hiring-process context, see the pre-employment testing guide and candidate-friendly hiring guide.

结构化面试问题

  1. Tell me how you would review a claim that was denied, using the details available in the case.

Listen for a clear account of how the candidate checks eligibility and claim information, investigates the denial, and describes an appropriate follow-up.

  2. Walk me through how you would determine what the payer and patient owe from a billing scenario.

Listen for careful use of the charges, plan terms and figures provided, and an explanation that distinguishes the payer amount from the patient balance.

  3. How would you handle a patient question about a balance while protecting the privacy of the record?

Listen for a patient-conscious explanation and attention to privacy when discussing records and billing details.

  4. Describe how you would choose a diagnosis or procedure code from a short encounter note.

Listen for a reasoned approach to using the note and relevant code information, rather than a definition recited from memory.

Roles and level

This test is intended for intermediate roles such as medical billers and coders, billing analysts, accounts receivable and insurance verification staff, revenue cycle team members, and practice managers. Choose it when the role calls for working with codes, claims, balances or billing records. It is not a general healthcare knowledge test. What the questions look like

Candidates answer multiple-choice questions based on a short situation, table or statement. Depending on the question, they select the right answer or every right answer. The examples cover day-to-day US medical billing work, including code choices from encounter notes, claim follow-up, denials, and working out payer and patient amounts. Code excerpts, plan terms and filing limits appear in the questions. Candidates may use a calculator and scratch paper. A four-question practice set takes four minutes and gives candidates a chance to see the question format before beginning.

A focused hiring measure

The assessment is designed around knowledge the job needs: US billing practice, the code sets billers use, and dollar amounts for payment questions. Its wording is plain, and patient and staff names come from many backgrounds. No condition is tied to a group of people. Each question includes the details needed to answer it, so candidates are not rewarded simply for memorizing one payer's rules. Learn more about HireValid's approach on how we build our tests.

Fairness and accommodations

The test asks only for knowledge the job needs: US billing practice, the code sets billers use, and dollar amounts for payment questions. Code list excerpts, plan terms and filing limits are shown in each question, so no candidate is helped by having memorized one payer's rules. Patient and staff names come from many backgrounds, no condition is tied to a group of people, and the wording is plain. A calculator and scratch paper are available to everyone.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
