The SQL Coding: Database Operations test gives candidates 20 minutes for one hands-on task: read a short brief and table layout, then write an SQLite query that filters, calculates, groups, sorts and leaves out rows as requested. It is an entry-level test for roles such as junior backend and full-stack developers, reporting assistants, support engineers and QA testers.
Ölçtüğü şey
Writing a correct entry-level SQLite query from a short business brief: filtering, simple calculations, grouping, sorting and leaving out the rows the brief excludes.
SQL queries
Candidates write one SQLite query that filters rows, makes simple calculations, groups and sorts results, and excludes rows specified by a brief.

Coding tasks
The candidate: Writes or fixes code in an editor and runs it against examples.
You see: Working code, checked against hidden test cases, not just knowledge of syntax.
1 task in 20 minutes.
Roles this test fits
Junior backend and full-stack developers, data and reporting assistants, support engineers, QA testers and other early-career roles that read from small relational databases.
What the task can show
Turn a brief into query logic
See whether candidates translate stated rules into filters and leave out rows the brief excludes.
Work with calculated results
The task shows how candidates handle simple calculations and grouping in a small workplace database.
Check the returned rows
The query runs against several hidden sets of data, and the score reflects how many give the expected result, so a query that only looks right earns less.
Keep context consistent
Every brief defines its table, column meanings, and query rules, so company-specific data knowledge is not needed.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the test handles answer integrity
Each candidate receives a different question drawn from large pools, one question at a time. The test lasts 20 minutes, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Timing runs on HireValid’s servers; reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and blocked copy attempts are recorded. Code runs against hidden test cases on HireValid’s servers; the cases and solutions do not reach the browser, and pastes into the editor are recorded. HireValid also summarizes signals such as time away from the test tab and unusually fast answers in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. It does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, employers can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as evidence
The score reflects how one query performs across hidden data, so treat it as evidence for a person to review, not a hiring decision by itself. Pair it with a separate work sample and a structured interview about the candidate’s approach to a brief. For more hiring context, see our pre-employment testing guide and how we build our tests. Yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları
How would you translate a brief with several row requirements into a query?
Listen for a clear way to map each stated rule to a filter and to check which rows should be excluded.
How would you approach a brief that asks for calculated and grouped results?
Listen for a step-by-step plan that connects the requested calculation and grouping to the table layout.
If a query returns extra rows, how would you investigate the result?
Listen for checking the brief’s conditions against the query and testing which condition allowed the extra rows.
How would you check that the sort order matches what the brief asks for?
Listen for a reference to the requested ordering and a practical check of the returned rows.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Every brief states the table layout, the column meanings and every rule the query must follow, so no company's data or local knowledge is needed. Settings are everyday ones such as bookings, loans, stock and deliveries, with names from many backgrounds, amounts written as plain numbers without money symbols, dates in one stated format, and plain wording kept at the level the role needs.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: this test has one task per attempt, so a score reflects a single query. Reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A single hands-on task set in a small workplace database. The candidate reads a short brief and a table layout, then writes one SQLite query that returns exactly the rows asked for: filtered, calculated and sorted as the brief describes. The query is run against several hidden sets of data, and the score reflects how many of them give the expected result.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- 1 practice task, 10 minutes, before the timed test.
- Taken on a desktop or laptop computer.

How is the SQL Coding: Database Operations query scored?+
The candidate's SQLite query is run against several hidden sets of data on HireValid's servers, and the score reflects how many of them give the expected result. The hidden data never reaches the browser, so a candidate cannot tune the query to it.
How does the SQL Coding: Database Operations test handle fairness?+
Each brief gives the table layout, column meanings, and every query rule, so candidates do not need knowledge of a particular company's data. The settings use everyday examples and plain wording suited to the role.
Can candidates use aids or return to a question in the SQL Coding: Database Operations test?+
The test is taken on a desktop or laptop computer, no aids are allowed, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. The practice set has one question and takes 10 minutes; the hiring test has one question and takes 20 minutes.
Which roles suit the SQL Coding: Database Operations test?+
It is an entry-level test for junior backend and full-stack developers, data and reporting assistants, support engineers, QA testers, and other early-career roles that read from small relational databases. Its single task reflects one query, so use the score alongside other hiring evidence.
