Kısa yanıt

The DevOps test is a timed hiring assessment for intermediate DevOps engineers and related roles. It measures practical judgment across Linux troubleshooting, scripting, infrastructure as code and cloud, and release pipelines with testing. Questions use short situations, command output, scripts, manifests, or pipeline files to assess how candidates apply their knowledge.

Ölçtüğü şey

Practical DevOps skill: Linux troubleshooting, scripting, infrastructure as code and cloud, and release pipelines with testing.

Linux administration and troubleshooting

Candidates interpret short situations or command output to reason about running and fixing Linux servers.

Scripting and programming

Candidates read short scripts, work out what they do, and spot what went wrong or what to change.

Infrastructure as code and cloud

Candidates work through how infrastructure is described in code on cloud platforms.

Delivery pipelines and testing

Candidates consider how release pipelines are built and which tests belong in them.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, system administrators, build and release engineers, QA engineers who work on pipelines, and full-stack or mobile developers who ship and run their own services.

What the DevOps test can show

  1. Evidence beyond a resume

A resume can list Linux, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, or Terraform. This DevOps test asks candidates to apply their knowledge to short situations, command output, scripts, manifests, and pipeline files.

  2. See practical reasoning

Multiple-choice questions ask candidates to choose the right answer, or every right answer. Their responses offer evidence of whether they can apply the material, not just recognize it.

  3. Focus the follow-up

Use results across Linux troubleshooting, scripting, infrastructure as code and cloud, and delivery pipelines to choose what to explore in an interview or work sample.

  4. A short, defined assessment

The test has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. A practice set has 4 questions and takes 3 minutes, so candidates can see the question style before starting.

How the test is administered

Each candidate gets a different set of questions from large question pools. Questions and answer options are shuffled, and the browser receives one question at a time. Answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The server runs the 10-minute timer; reloading returns the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. Invitation links are personal and expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline are provided for employer review; the system never decides on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as one source of evidence

Treat the result as evidence for a person to review, not as a hiring decision. Consider the candidate’s responses across Linux administration and troubleshooting, scripting, infrastructure as code and cloud, and delivery pipelines with testing. Pair the score with a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. A work sample can let the candidate explain how they would investigate a Linux issue, reason about a short script, describe infrastructure in code, or consider tests in a pipeline. Keep the task relevant to the role, and give candidates the same prompt and evaluation criteria. Use the interview to explore their reasoning and the specific work they would do in your environment. Yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları

  1. Tell me how you would investigate this Linux command output and decide what to check next.

Listen for a clear troubleshooting sequence, attention to the facts shown, and an explanation of how each check would guide the next step.

  2. Walk me through how you would review this short script before relying on it in a release process.

Listen for careful reasoning about what the script does, what could go wrong, and how the candidate would confirm its behavior.

  3. How would you approach describing this infrastructure need in code for a cloud platform?

Listen for a practical explanation of the infrastructure choices and how the candidate would make the description clear and usable.

  4. Given this release pipeline, how would you decide which tests to include and where they belong?

Listen for reasoning about the pipeline and its tests, including how the candidate would explain the choices they propose.

Roles this test is designed for

The test is intended for intermediate DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, system administrators, and build and release engineers. It can also suit QA engineers who work on pipelines, plus full-stack or mobile developers who ship and run their own services. Match the role to the areas that matter in your job. For adjacent skills, consider the AWS test or the Terraform test.

How the skills connect to the work

The assessment brings together server troubleshooting, short-script reasoning, infrastructure described as code on cloud platforms, and release pipelines with testing. That mix can help employers discuss the parts of a role the candidate has encountered and the parts that need follow-up. The questions use common tools such as Linux, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and Terraform, while focusing on practical decisions rather than rare flags or version trivia. For roles that also call for security skills, see the Cybersecurity test.

Question style and candidate experience

Questions are multiple choice. Each presents a short situation, table, or statement and asks the candidate to choose the right answer or every right answer. Many questions show short command output, a script, a manifest, or a pipeline file and ask what it does, what went wrong, or what to change. Plain US English, short sentences, and scenarios that provide their needed facts keep the focus on understanding rather than idioms, local knowledge, or reading speed.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions are written in plain US English with short sentences, and every scenario gives the facts it needs, with no idioms, money or local knowledge. Questions test behavior that is stable across widely used tool versions rather than recall of rare flags or version trivia, and cloud questions are written in vendor-neutral terms. Names in scenarios come from many backgrounds, and code samples are kept short so reading speed matters less than understanding.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
