What the Communication Essentials test shows that a resume does not

  1. Judgment about written messages

"Excellent communication skills" on a resume is a claim. The scenarios show whether a candidate chooses the reply that gives the reader what they need.

  2. Checking meaning before acting

The better responses check what a message or a cue means rather than treating it as certain, which shows how a candidate clarifies and summarizes.

  3. Professional tone under pressure

Scenarios about meetings and tricky messages show whether a candidate keeps communication polite and appropriate for the reader.

How the Communication Essentials test handles AI assistance

Each candidate gets a different set of scenarios drawn from large pools, and the order of scenarios and responses is shuffled. The browser receives one scenario at a time, answer keys stay on HireValid's servers, and there is no going back to an earlier scenario. Scenario text cannot be copied, and a blocked copy is recorded.

Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast answers are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review; it never decides on its own.

How to use the Communication Essentials result

The test shows whether a candidate recognizes a clear, useful message. It does not ask them to write one. For roles that write to customers or colleagues every day, add a short work sample: a customer reply that applies a policy, or a short update for a manager, the same for everyone.

Score the writing with a short rubric agreed before anyone reads an answer: clarity (the reader knows what happened and what to do next after one read), accuracy (facts, names, dates and figures are correct), relevance (it answers the actual request) and tone (polite and right for the reader). Reward no one style, and keep the decision with the people hiring.

Interview questions to follow the Communication Essentials test

  1. Tell me about a message you wrote that needed a decision from a busy reader. How did you structure it?

Listen for putting the request and the deadline first, then the background the reader needs.

  2. How would you rewrite one sentence of your work sample for a different reader, such as a customer instead of a colleague?

Listen for changes in tone and detail that fit the new reader, made without losing the facts.

  3. Tell me about a time a message or a conversation was misunderstood. What did you do?

Listen for checking what the other person meant and summarizing the agreed outcome.

Fairness and accommodations

Every scenario states the facts, tone and cues it turns on, so no company practice or local custom is needed. Body language and tone are described in words, and no response is keyed as best for reading a cue as certain; the better responses check what it means. Reading level is kept plain, responses are alike in length and tone, and names, ages and roles come from many backgrounds without stereotypes.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it. With two scenarios per area, the area scores are a rough guide; the overall score is the steadier figure.

What is on the Communication Essentials test?+

Eight short workplace scenarios about messages, conversations and meetings, each with four possible responses. The candidate picks the one they think works best, with partial credit for the second-best. The result covers four areas: written messages, listening and cues, clarifying and summarizing, and professional etiquette.

Does the Communication Essentials test ask candidates to write?+

No. Candidates choose between responses, so the test shows judgment about written messages rather than their own writing. For roles that write every day, add a short writing task from your real work for the candidates you are considering, scored with a rubric for clarity, accuracy, relevance and tone that you agree before reading any answers.

Which roles is the Communication Essentials test for?+

Roles where clear communication matters every day: sales and customer service, administration and coordination, team leads and managers, IT and technical staff who work with colleagues and clients, and most office and hybrid roles. It takes 8 minutes and can be taken on a phone as well as a computer.

Does the Communication Essentials test favor one communication style?+

It is written not to. Every scenario states the facts, tone and cues it turns on, so no company practice or local custom is needed, and body language and tone are described in words. Responses are alike in length and tone, and names, ages and roles come from many backgrounds without stereotypes.
