The SolidWorks test is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice assessment of intermediate SolidWorks work. It measures how candidates apply knowledge of sketches and part features, assemblies and mates, designing for production, and analysis tools. It suits mechanical engineers, product designers, CAD drafters, manufacturing and tooling engineers, and technicians who build or review models.

Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Mechanical engineers, product designers, CAD drafters and designers, manufacturing and tooling engineers, and technicians who build or review SolidWorks models.
What the SolidWorks test can show
Applied model knowledge
Scenario questions ask candidates to interpret a feature tree, mate list or results table. Their choices offer evidence of how they apply SolidWorks knowledge, beyond what a resume says about experience.
A focused review
The test covers parts, assemblies, production-ready design and analysis in one 10-minute assessment. Use its results to focus follow-up questions on the areas most relevant to the role.
A clearer skills discussion
A SolidWorks assessment gives you concrete topics to discuss, such as a part feature that did not work as expected or a design prepared for production. This can make an interview more specific.
Less time spent on basic screening
Use the score as one signal when deciding where to spend interview time. It can help you focus a work sample and interview on the candidate's model reasoning rather than relying on resume claims alone.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the test handles answer integrity
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large question pools, and question order and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys never reach it. Timing runs on the server, so a reload returns the same question with the time left. Candidates cannot copy question text, and a blocked copy is recorded. Each invitation link is personal and expires. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes and very fast answers in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review; the score never decides. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos. Questions are answered once, in order, with no going back, and many ask what went wrong in a feature tree or mate list rather than for a definition.

Use the score as one piece of evidence
Review the score alongside a work sample and a structured interview, never on its own. For a work sample, ask the candidate to review a relevant model or drawing and explain their choices. Connect the work sample to the job: for example, discuss a part feature, assembly mates, a production-ready design or an analysis result. The test uses multiple-choice questions rather than asking candidates to build a model, so use the conversation and work sample to understand how they approach actual tasks. Ask each candidate the same core questions and take notes on the evidence they share. For more guidance, see the pre-employment testing guide.
Structured SolidWorks interview questions
Tell me how you would investigate a part whose feature tree shows an unexpected result after a design change.
Listen for a clear sequence of checks tied to the sketch and part features, and for the candidate to explain how they would identify the cause before making changes.
How would you approach an assembly where a component does not move as expected after mates are added?
Listen for reasoning about the mate list and component relationships, rather than a memorized description of a mate.
Describe how you would prepare a model and drawing for someone who needs to make the part.
Listen for attention to production needs and for a specific explanation of how the model or drawing would support making the part.
If a stress study or motion result raised a concern about a design, what would you examine next?
Listen for a careful interpretation of the result and a reasoned next step using relevant analysis tools, rather than treating one result as a verdict.

Who this intermediate test is for
This SolidWorks assessment test is aimed at mechanical engineers, product designers, CAD drafters and designers, manufacturing and tooling engineers, and technicians who build or review SolidWorks models. Its intermediate level makes it a focused hiring signal for roles that use parts, assemblies, production design or analysis. Match the test to the work the person will do, then use a work sample to see how they apply their knowledge. Browse the test library to compare other hiring assessments.
What the questions look like
The 15 questions use multiple choice. A question may present a short situation, table or statement and ask the candidate to choose the right answer, or every right answer. Many show a feature tree, mate list or results table and ask what happens next, what went wrong or which approach is best. Questions cover sketches and part features, assemblies and mates, preparing models and drawings for production, and mass properties, motion and stress studies. They describe models, commands and results in words and small tables instead of screenshots. Units are metric, numbers are kept simple enough to work without a calculator, and scenarios use generic parts rather than real brands.
Pair related skills thoughtfully
Use the SolidWorks test for model and design knowledge, and choose any additional assessment based on the role's other needs. For example, Microsoft Excel Intermediate or Google Sheets may be relevant when spreadsheet work is also part of the job. The test is still only one source of evidence; pair it with a job-related work sample and a structured conversation. Read how we build our tests for more about the test library.
Fairness and accommodations
Questions describe models, commands and results in words and small tables instead of screenshots, so nothing depends on one version's screen layout or on telling colors apart. Units are metric, numbers are kept simple enough to work out without a calculator, and features are limited to ones that behave the same way in recent releases. Scenarios use generic products and parts, not real brands, and the reading level is kept plain.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Sık sorulan sorular
What does the SolidWorks test measure?+
It measures hands-on knowledge of SolidWorks parts, assemblies, production-ready design and analysis tools. Questions can cover building parts from sketches and features, putting components together with mates, preparing models and drawings so they can be made, and checking a design with mass properties, motion and stress studies. It is designed to provide evidence for an employer to review, not a stand-alone hiring decision.
How long is the SolidWorks test, and how many questions are there?+
The SolidWorks test has 15 questions and a 10-minute time limit. It uses multiple-choice questions based on short situations, tables or statements. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question after moving forward. There is also a practice set with 4 questions and a 4-minute time limit, which lets candidates see the question format before starting.
Does the SolidWorks test ask candidates to build a model?+
No. The test uses multiple choice rather than a live model-building task. Many questions show a feature tree, mate list or results table and ask what happens next, what went wrong or which approach is best. For evidence of how someone works directly in SolidWorks, pair the assessment with a job-related work sample where the candidate reviews or works through a relevant model.
Which roles can use the SolidWorks assessment?+
It is intended for mechanical engineers, product designers, CAD drafters and designers, manufacturing and tooling engineers, and technicians who build or review SolidWorks models. The test is intermediate. Consider whether the role actually uses the covered skills, such as assemblies and mates or preparing designs for production, before adding it to your hiring process.
How should I use a SolidWorks test score?+
Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not as a pass mark or a decision by itself. Compare it with a relevant work sample and use a structured interview to explore the candidate's reasoning about part features, mates, production design or analysis results. The goal is to understand what the candidate can explain and apply in relation to the role.
How does the SolidWorks assessment handle different screen layouts?+
Questions describe models, commands and results in words and small tables instead of relying on screenshots or one version's screen layout. The test uses metric units and simple numbers, and limits features to ones that behave the same way in recent releases. Its scenarios use generic products and parts, and the reading level is kept plain.
Which analysis tools does the SolidWorks test cover?+
The analysis and advanced tools questions cover checking a design with mass properties, motion studies and stress studies. A question may show a results table and ask what it means or which approach is best next. Features are limited to ones that behave the same way in recent releases, so candidates are not judged on one version's menus.
