Jawaban singkat
The intermediate Matplotlib test checks practical skill with the Python plotting library. Candidates read short code snippets and charts, then identify what code draws, which call makes a stated change, or what is wrong with a plot. It covers everyday and statistical charts, figure layout, and advanced plots for data analysts, data scientists, and other plotting-code roles.
Hal yang diukur
Practical Matplotlib skill: drawing and styling plots, building statistical charts, laying out figures and making advanced plots.
Core plotting
Candidates work with everyday charts and how plots are drawn and styled.
Statistical plots
Candidates judge which calls turn made-up measurements and counts into a statistical chart, and what a given snippet will show.
Figures and layout
Questions turn on how several plots share one figure and where each element ends up.
Advanced plots
Questions include advanced plots such as heatmaps, contours, and annotations.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Data analysts, data scientists, data visualization developers, machine learning engineers, and technical leads who write or review plotting code in Python.
What the Matplotlib test can show
Code-to-chart reasoning
See whether a candidate can read a short snippet and work out what it draws, beyond listing Matplotlib on a resume.
Plot changes in context
Questions ask which call makes a stated change or what is wrong with a plot, giving you evidence about practical plotting decisions.
Accessible chart reading
Made-up data needs no industry knowledge, and series are distinguished by markers, line styles, position, or labels rather than color alone.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Controls and review signals
Each candidate receives a different question set from large pools, with questions in a different order and answer options shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. The 10-minute timer runs on the server; if the page reloads, the same question returns with only the time left. Candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt appears in the timeline. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. Employers review the Integrity Score and evidence timeline; neither makes the hiring decision. See How we build our tests.

Use the score as evidence
Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not a decision. Pair it with a work sample where the candidate explains or adjusts a plot, then use a structured interview to ask how they reasoned through code, a chart change, or a layout issue. Consider the evidence in light of the role. For related programming skills, see NumPy, Pandas, and Data Analysis Using R.
Pertanyaan wawancara terstruktur
Tell me about a plot you changed after reviewing the data. What did you change, and why?
Listen for a clear link between the data or chart issue and the plotting change the candidate chose.
How would you investigate a chart that does not show the result you expected?
Listen for a step-by-step approach to checking the code and interpreting the resulting chart.
Describe how you would make several plots clear when they share a figure.
Listen for reasoning about figure layout and how the candidate would make each plot understandable.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Questions use neutral, made-up data such as sensor readings, measurements and counts, with no money, sports, idioms or local knowledge, and need no knowledge of any industry. Charts never rely on color alone: series are told apart by marker, line style, position or label. Code is short and uses current, commonly used Matplotlib features rather than rare trivia, and the wording is kept plain so the test measures plotting skill rather than reading speed.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A short, timed check of working knowledge of Matplotlib, the Python plotting library. Candidates read short code snippets and charts, then decide what the code draws, which call makes a stated change, or what is wrong with a plot. The questions cover everyday charts, statistical plots, figure layout and more advanced plots such as heatmaps, contours and annotations.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan
Which roles fit the Matplotlib test?+
It is an intermediate check for data analysts, data scientists, data visualization developers, machine learning engineers, and technical leads who write or review plotting code in Python. Choose it when plotting code is part of the daily work, whether building charts or reviewing a colleague's.
Do candidates write or run code in the Matplotlib test?+
No. Each question shows a short snippet, a chart or both, and the candidate chooses the right answer from the options. That makes it a test of reading and reviewing plotting code, which suits technical leads who review it as well as the people who write it.
How does the Matplotlib test handle chart examples fairly?+
Questions use neutral, made-up data such as sensor readings, measurements, and counts, without requiring industry knowledge. Charts do not rely on color alone: series are distinguished by markers, line style, position, or labels. Short code uses commonly used Matplotlib features, and wording is kept plain.
Can candidates use aids or try the Matplotlib test first?+
No aids are allowed during the test, and candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Candidates can first use the practice set, which has four questions and lasts four minutes, to get used to the question formats before the 15 timed questions.
