What situational judgment assessments cover
Situational judgment assessments use realistic workplace scenarios to ask candidates how they would respond. HireValid’s tests focus on choices involving customers, colleagues and deadlines. Depending on the test, those choices may concern resolving a customer issue, communicating clearly, leading people, managing time or making a business decision.
These assessments provide evidence about practical judgment in situations relevant to a role. They do not show everything about a candidate, and a result is a signal for an employer to review, not a verdict or a pass mark. Consider it alongside other evidence, such as an interview.
An SJT differs from a reasoning assessment: it asks how someone applies judgment to a work situation, rather than how they think with unfamiliar material. It also differs from a personality questionnaire. A personality test describes preferences and is a profile, not a grade; an SJT asks candidates to judge a situation.
Choose a test for the role and level
For entry-level customer-facing work, Customer Service Situational Judgement covers empathy, issue resolution, policy and escalation. It suits support agents, reception staff, and retail and hospitality teams. For everyday communication in office, sales or customer service roles, consider Communication Essentials or Communication in Practice. Active Listening suits roles built on conversation and trust, including people managers, advisors and client-facing staff.
For client relationships and agreements, Account Management is aimed at staff who look after and grow existing accounts. Negotiation fits roles that reach agreements, such as sales, procurement and recruiting. Presentation Skills is for roles that present to clients, managers or colleagues.
For people who introduce tools or lead distributed teams, consider Digital Agility or Remote Team Management. Time Management fits roles that juggle tasks and deadlines. Team leads and managers can also consider Leadership and People Management or Diversity and Inclusion at Work. Business Ethics and Compliance is for managers and people stepping into management.
Most tests are intermediate. The entry-level option is Customer Service Situational Judgement; Business Judgment is advanced, for people who make or advise on business decisions. Tests take 8 to 15 minutes.
Combine tests and review results
Choose assessments around the decisions the role requires, rather than adding tests without a clear purpose. For customer-facing support work, Customer Service Situational Judgement can focus on handling customer problems; add Communication Essentials only if everyday communication is also a role requirement. For managers, Leadership and People Management can focus on leading people, while Business Ethics and Compliance can address ethical and compliance decisions.
For work involving account growth, Negotiation or Account Management may fit depending on whether the role centers on reaching agreements or managing existing clients. For a senior role that makes or advises on strategy, sales, performance or finance decisions, Business Judgment is the advanced option. Keep the combination tied to the actual responsibilities.
Read each result as evidence to consider with other information about the candidate. Do not use a score as a stand-alone decision, pass mark or hidden ranking. A structured interview can let you ask about relevant experience and explore how the candidate reasons through a situation.
How the scenarios support fair assessment
The tests use judgment scenarios, and their fairness details vary by subject. Customer service scenarios state the facts and rules they turn on, so candidates do not need to know a particular company’s policy or local custom. Communication tests use plain wording; body language and tone are described in words, and the better response checks what a cue means instead of treating it as certain.
Other tests provide the context needed for their decisions. Business Ethics and Compliance states the rule or code clause involved. Business Judgment states the facts, figures and limits. Digital Agility describes tools by what they do rather than by brand. Remote Team Management states the team agreements and constraints, and uses time zones rather than countries.
Across all 14 tests, responses are alike in length and tone and names come from many backgrounds. Most tests also state that no person is drawn from a stereotype. The tests do not require unstated company practices or cultural customs; several specifically state that no country's law or local rules are needed. Plan appropriate accommodations in your hiring process, and review results as one part of your decision. See fairness and accommodations and how we build our tests.
Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan
Can a situational judgment test replace an interview?+
No. An SJT shows how someone judges typical work situations, while an interview lets you explore their experience, motivation and reasoning in depth. A useful step is to ask each candidate to talk through one or two scenarios in a structured interview and explain the trade-offs they weighed.
How do I choose a situational judgment test level?+
Match the test to the role’s responsibilities and level. Customer Service Situational Judgement is entry-level, most tests are intermediate, and Business Judgment is advanced for roles that make or advise on business decisions.
How should employers combine situational judgment tests?+
Choose tests that cover distinct responsibilities the role actually includes. For example, combine a customer service focus with a communication focus only when both are relevant. Review the results with other evidence instead of letting one score decide.
How are situational judgment tests kept fair?+
Each scenario states the facts or rules it turns on, so candidates do not need one company's practices or local customs. Responses are alike in length and tone, so the best one cannot be spotted by its wording. OPM notes that applicants often see SJTs as very fair. Still review outcomes for your own roles.
How long do HireValid situational judgment tests take?+
Most take 10 minutes. Communication Essentials is the shortest at 8 minutes, Time Management takes 9 minutes, and Active Listening is the longest at 15 minutes with 16 scenarios. The other 11 tests each take 10 minutes.
