Jawaban singkat
The Data Modeling Concepts test is an intermediate hiring assessment for data modelers, data architects, data engineers, database developers, analytics engineers, and business analysts who design or review data structures. It measures how candidates turn business requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical models, including relationships, keys, and normalization.
Hal yang diukur
Turning business requirements into conceptual, logical and physical data models, including relationships, keys and normalization.
Gathering modeling requirements
Candidates interpret business rules to identify what a data structure needs to represent.
Conceptual modeling
Candidates choose a high-level model that reflects entities and their relationships.
Logical modeling and normalization
Candidates work with keys and normalization when shaping a logical data model.
Physical design
Candidates choose physical design decisions for the tables a database would hold.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Data modelers, data architects, data engineers, database developers, analytics engineers and business analysts who design or review data structures.
What this test can show
From business rules to structure
Short scenarios ask candidates to choose a design decision based on business rules, showing how they connect requirements with data structures.
Careful reading of sample rows
Many questions put entity lists, sample rows, or table definitions in a small table, so you see whether candidates check the details before choosing keys or relationships.
Tool-neutral scenarios
Questions use generic modeling terms and standard SQL data types, not a vendor's product. Everyday organizations and scratch paper for every candidate also support a consistent assessment.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
Test integrity signals
Each candidate receives a different question set from large pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time; answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server, so reloading restores the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and blocked copy attempts are recorded. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. These are summarized in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline for employer review; the score never decides on its own. With candidate consent, employers can add webcam photos at random moments. Candidates cannot go back, and the test takes 10 minutes.

Use the score as one signal
Review the score alongside a work sample in which the candidate explains a data structure choice from business requirements, sample rows, or table definitions. Then use a structured interview to explore the reasoning behind the choices. The Data Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) test and Data Science test cover related areas, while How we build our tests explains our test approach. Treat the score as evidence to review, not a pass mark or a decision by itself.
Pertanyaan wawancara terstruktur
A business team gives you two rules that seem to conflict. How would you clarify what the data model needs to represent?
Listen for questions that uncover the business requirements and a clear explanation of how those details affect the proposed structure.
You are reviewing a table definition and sample rows. What would you examine before recommending a change?
Listen for specific attention to keys, relationships, and whether the table design fits the information shown.
How would you explain a normalization choice to a colleague who needs to use the resulting data?
Listen for a concrete explanation connecting the design choice to the requirements and the data structure.

Fairness and accommodations
Scenarios use everyday organizations such as clinics, libraries, warehouses, schools and transport services, with no currency symbols, national ID formats, postal code systems or other local knowledge. Names come from many backgrounds. Questions use generic modeling terms and standard SQL data types rather than any vendor's product, so experience with one particular tool gives no advantage. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A timed set of short scenarios about designing data structures for a business, from the first requirements to the tables a database would hold. Candidates read business rules, entity lists, sample rows and table definitions, then choose the design decision that fits. Many questions show their details in a small table, so the answer comes from reading the scenario with care.
- Questions are in English.
- Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.
Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan
Who should use the Data Modeling Concepts test?+
Use it when hiring intermediate-level data modelers, data architects, data engineers, database developers, analytics engineers, or business analysts who design or review data structures. The scenarios assess choices from requirements through physical design, so the test is relevant to roles with that work.
What do candidates do in the Data Modeling Concepts test?+
Candidates answer 15 multiple-choice questions based on short business scenarios. They read details such as business rules, entity lists, sample rows, and table definitions, then choose the design decision that fits. Many questions present details in a small table.
How does the Data Modeling Concepts test handle fairness across candidates?+
Scenarios use everyday organizations such as clinics, libraries, warehouses, schools, and transport services, without local currency, ID, or postal code knowledge. Names come from many backgrounds. Generic modeling terms and standard SQL data types avoid an advantage from experience with one particular tool.
Can candidates use scratch paper on the Data Modeling Concepts test?+
Yes. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate, which helps when sketching entities and relationships or checking sample rows against a proposed key. The test does not require a desktop computer.
Is there a practice set for the Data Modeling Concepts test?+
Yes. Candidates can try a practice set of 4 questions that takes 4 minutes. The test itself has 15 questions and a 10-minute time limit. The practice set is a chance to see the question format before starting.
