Jawaban singkat

The Terraform test is a timed, intermediate multiple-choice assessment for employers hiring people who build, run or review infrastructure as code. It measures working knowledge of core concepts, CLI workflow, configuration, modules, HCP Terraform and Terraform Enterprise through short situations and code excerpts.

Hal yang diukur

Working knowledge of Terraform concepts, commands, configuration and modules, read from short code excerpts.

Core concepts

Covers Terraform ideas such as providers, state and dependencies, including how they relate in a short example.

CLI and workflow

Covers command-line steps from init to apply and asks candidates to interpret commands in context.

Reading and changing configuration

Covers short configuration excerpts and the effects of a proposed change.

Modules, HCP Terraform and Terraform Enterprise

Covers questions about using modules and working with these Terraform platforms.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Roles that build or run infrastructure as code: DevOps, site reliability, cloud and platform engineers, operations engineers, software engineers who manage their own infrastructure, and the architects and engineering managers who review that work.

What this assessment can show

  1. Evidence beyond a resume

A resume can list Terraform experience, but it does not show how someone reads a configuration or reasons through a plan excerpt. The questions ask candidates to apply concepts to a situation, table, statement, command or short code sample.

  2. A focused view of intermediate skills

The assessment covers core concepts, the CLI workflow, configuration changes, modules, HCP Terraform and Terraform Enterprise. That gives you specific areas to discuss instead of relying on a broad claim of infrastructure-as-code experience.

  3. A short step in your hiring process

The test has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. Use it to gather an initial signal before deciding which parts of a candidate's experience deserve more time in a work sample or interview.

  4. Answers based on application

Multiple-choice questions ask candidates to choose the right answer, or every right answer, for a short example. This gives you evidence of applying the material, rather than only recognizing a term or repeating a definition.

Test integrity signals for employer review

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools, and question order and answer options are shuffled. The browser shows one question at a time, while answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid also records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers that are faster than a question can be read. The employer can review these signals in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline; the system never decides on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as evidence, not a decision

Review the score alongside the candidate’s experience and a work sample that reflects the role. For example, ask the candidate to explain a short Terraform configuration or reason through a plan excerpt, then compare that discussion with the assessment areas. Keep the same job-related prompts and review criteria for each candidate. A score can help you choose what to explore, but it should not decide whether someone advances or receives an offer. For more on using assessments as one part of hiring, read the pre-employment testing guide.

Pertanyaan wawancara terstruktur

  1. Walk me through a Terraform change you worked on, from the first command you used to the way you applied it.

Listen for a clear account of the CLI workflow, decisions made along the way and how the candidate understood the planned change. Invite them to use a non-confidential example.

  2. Here is a short configuration and plan excerpt. What would you check before making the proposed change?

Listen for careful reading of the code and plan, relevant core concepts such as state or dependencies, and a reasoned explanation tied to the excerpt.

  3. Tell me about a module you used or reviewed. How did you decide what belonged in it?

Listen for a specific account of the module's role and how the candidate read or changed its configuration, rather than a definition of modules.

  4. Describe a time you reviewed infrastructure-as-code work from another person. What did you focus on?

Listen for concrete review steps and attention to configuration, workflow or dependencies. For architects and engineering managers, ask how they would guide a review without assuming they wrote the change.

Roles and level this test suits

This intermediate Terraform assessment is intended for roles that build or run infrastructure as code. That includes DevOps, site reliability, cloud and platform engineers, operations engineers, and software engineers who manage their own infrastructure. It can also support architects and engineering managers who review that work. Use the result as one signal about the skills the role needs, not as a substitute for reviewing the candidate's relevant work. If you are building a wider hiring process, see the pre-employment testing guide and the test library.

What the questions look like

The Terraform test uses multiple-choice questions. A candidate reads a short situation, table or statement and selects the right answer, which may mean selecting every right answer. Most questions show a short configuration, command or plan excerpt and ask what it does, what goes wrong, or which change is right. The test measures reading and application through these brief examples; it is not a live configuration task. Candidates have 10 minutes for 15 questions and cannot go back to a previous question.

Fairness and candidate experience

Questions use neutral examples with general-purpose providers and plain resource names, so an answer does not depend on knowledge of one cloud vendor's services or arguments. Behavior reflects current Terraform 1.x releases, and a version-specific feature is named in the question. Each question shows the code it asks about, uses plain US English and gives every candidate the same time per question. Candidates can try a practice set of 4 questions with 4 minutes to complete it. Read how we build our tests and our candidate-friendly hiring guide for more information.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use neutral examples built on general-purpose providers and plain resource names, so no answer depends on knowing one cloud vendor's services or arguments. Behavior is as in current Terraform 1.x releases, and any version-specific feature is named in the question. Each question shows the code it asks about, the wording is plain US English, and every candidate gets the same time per question.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan

What does the Terraform test measure?+

It measures working knowledge of Terraform concepts, commands, configuration and modules through short code excerpts. Topics include providers, state, dependencies, the workflow from init to apply, configuration changes, modules, HCP Terraform and Terraform Enterprise. Questions ask candidates to apply what they know to a situation, command, table, statement or plan excerpt.

Who should use this Terraform test when hiring?+

Use it for intermediate roles that build, run or review infrastructure as code. Relevant roles include DevOps, site reliability, cloud and platform engineers, operations engineers, and software engineers who manage their own infrastructure. It can also be useful when hiring architects or engineering managers who review that work. Match the assessment to the tasks and level of the opening.

How long does the Terraform test take?+

The assessment has 15 questions and a 10-minute time limit. Questions are multiple choice and often use short Terraform code, command or plan excerpts. Candidates cannot return to an earlier question. There is also a practice set with 4 questions and a 4-minute time limit.

Does the Terraform test require writing code?+

No. The format is multiple choice: candidates read a short situation, table or statement and select the right answer, or every right answer. Many questions show a configuration, command or plan excerpt and ask what it does, what goes wrong or which change is right. Pair the result with a work sample if you need to observe a candidate working through a task.

How should I interpret a Terraform test score?+

Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not as a hiring decision by itself. Compare it with the candidate's relevant experience and a role-related work sample. Use interview questions to explore specific areas such as state, CLI workflow, configuration changes or modules. The test's reliability is provisional and is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Does the Terraform test rely on a specific cloud vendor?+

The examples use general-purpose providers and plain resource names, so answers do not depend on knowing one cloud vendor's services or arguments. Questions reflect behavior in current Terraform 1.x releases, and they name a version-specific feature when one is relevant. Each question includes the code it asks about.

Can candidates go back to an earlier question in the Terraform test?+

No. Candidates see one question at a time and cannot go back. The timer runs on the server, so reloading the page brings back the same question with only the time that was left. Keep this format in mind when explaining the assessment process to candidates.
