Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Roles that handle protected health information: privacy and compliance staff, health information and medical records staff, healthcare administrators and practice managers, billing and coding staff, data privacy analysts, and clinicians such as physicians and nurses.

A focused check of day-to-day HIPAA knowledge

  1. Look beyond a resume

A resume can describe a candidate’s work history, but it does not show how they apply HIPAA rules to patient information. Short situations ask candidates to choose an answer, or every right answer, based on the details provided.

  2. Keep the check role-relevant

Use the results as one source of evidence for jobs that handle protected health information. The content covers rules and scope, everyday handling, and safeguards and incident response, rather than general healthcare knowledge.

  3. Spend a defined amount of time

The assessment has 15 questions and takes 10 minutes. A separate practice set contains 4 questions and takes 4 minutes, so candidates can see the question experience before the hiring assessment.

  4. Make review more specific

The result can help you choose what to explore in an interview, such as a candidate’s approach to using or sharing patient information at work. Treat it as a signal to review, not a decision about the candidate.

How the assessment is delivered

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large question pools. The order changes for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading brings back the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. They cannot return to an earlier question. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. These appear in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline for the employer to review. The system does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as evidence, not a verdict

Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. The test is one short check of HIPAA knowledge; it does not show every part of a person’s performance at work. Use the sub-skill results and question topics to guide follow-up, then consider the candidate’s work sample and interview responses together. Do not use a score alone to make a hiring decision. The test is provisional: norms do not exist yet, and reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları

  1. A colleague asks you to share patient information for a work task. How would you decide what to do next?

Listen for a practical explanation of how the candidate would consider the work context, the information involved, and whether sharing is appropriate.

  2. You notice that patient information may have been handled incorrectly. What steps would you take?

Listen for a clear, measured response that addresses the situation and appropriate next steps, rather than an unsupported assumption about what happened.

  3. Tell me about how you would protect patient information while completing a routine task in this role.

Listen for job-specific actions and an explanation of how the candidate would handle information carefully in the work they would perform.

  4. Tell me about a time you had to keep sensitive information secure while still getting a task done quickly. What did you do?

Listen for a specific example, the safeguards the candidate chose, and how they balanced the deadline with protecting the information.

Roles this HIPAA check can support

This intermediate assessment is intended for roles that handle protected health information. That includes privacy and compliance staff, health information and medical records staff, healthcare administrators and practice managers, billing and coding staff, data privacy analysts, and clinicians such as physicians and nurses. For a pharmacy role, consider whether the Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist test also fits the job. Add this assessment when HIPAA knowledge is relevant to the role, rather than assuming the same test mix suits every opening.

Pair it with the work the person will do

Use a work sample that reflects the responsibilities of the position, then ask structured interview questions about the candidate’s choices. For a role with a distinct focus on information security, you can review the Cybersecurity test as a separate measure. For office duties, the Administrative Assistant test may be relevant to other job skills. These tests measure different areas; choose based on the role rather than treating one as a substitute for another.

Plain-language scope and fair review

Questions cover federal HIPAA rules the job needs. They do not ask about state laws, section numbers, or penalty amounts. Scenarios use plain language, names from many backgrounds, and a range of care settings, and avoid stereotypes about patients or staff. Each question gives the facts needed to answer without trick wording. For more about HireValid’s approach, read How we build our tests or the candidate-friendly hiring guide.

Fairness and accommodations

The test asks only about the federal HIPAA rules the job needs, never about state laws, section numbers or penalty amounts. Scenarios are written in plain language, use names from many backgrounds and a range of care settings, and avoid stereotypes about patients or staff. Every question gives the facts its answer needs, with no trick wording.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: no norms exist yet, and reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
