Kısa yanıt
The Reinforcement Learning (RL) test is a 10-minute, 15-question multiple-choice assessment for machine learning engineers, AI engineers, robotics and autonomous systems engineers, data scientists, research scientists, and game AI developers. It measures RL foundations, model-free methods, deep value and policy methods, and practical ways to improve agent training.
Ölçtüğü şey
Knowledge of reinforcement learning foundations, model-free methods, deep value and policy methods, and practical ways to make agent training work.
RL foundations
Checks how candidates understand the framing of an agent's problem.
Model-free methods
Assesses reasoning about what model-free methods do.
Deep value and policy methods
Covers understanding of deep value and policy approaches.
Improving agent training
Looks at practical choices that can help an agent's training work.
Question formats
Multiple choice
The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.
You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.
15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.
Roles this test fits
Machine learning engineers, AI engineers, robotics and autonomous systems engineers, data scientists, research scientists and game AI developers who build or tune learning agents.
A focused signal for technical hiring
Look beyond resume keywords
Short scenarios, small tables of values, and brief Python snippets show how a candidate reasons about RL concepts, rather than only listing them.
Check relevant methods
The RL test covers foundations, model-free methods, deep value and policy methods, and practical agent training in one short assessment.
Keep the assessment compact
Fifteen questions take 10 minutes, giving you a focused signal before investing more time in interviews or a work sample.
Avoid a toolkit-specific screen
Code uses plain Python without a particular framework or library, so the questions focus on reasoning about learning agents.
What you get for each candidate
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the RL test is delivered
Each candidate receives a different set of questions drawn from large question pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading brings back the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and blocked copy attempts are recorded in the timeline. Invitation links are personal and expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid summarizes signals, such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and unusually fast answers, in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline for employer review. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as one piece of evidence
Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. For a work sample, ask the candidate to explain an agent-training choice using a short scenario, then compare that reasoning with the RL test’s signals. Do not use the score alone to decide. For related skills, see the Artificial Intelligence test. See how we build our tests for more on the assessment approach.
Yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları
Tell me how you would frame an agent's problem in a new grid-world task.
Listen for a clear explanation of the task framing and how the candidate would connect it to an agent's learning.
Describe a training run that behaved differently than you expected. How did you investigate it?
Listen for a reasoned account of the observed behavior, the checks they made, and how they decided what to change.
How would you choose a change to try when an agent's training is not working as intended?
Listen for a practical choice tied to the scenario, and a way to reason about whether that change helped.
Walk me through how you would interpret a small table of values when considering an agent's next step.
Listen for careful reasoning from the values and a clear explanation, rather than a memorized term.
Understand scoring and benchmarks
Fairness and accommodations
Questions are written in plain US English, with every symbol defined where it is used, and scenarios use neutral settings such as grid worlds, warehouse robots and simple control tasks rather than particular games, sports or local knowledge. Code is short, plain Python with no particular framework or library, so candidates are not favored for knowing one toolkit. Numbers are small enough to work with scratch paper, which every candidate may use.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.
Test details
A timed check of working knowledge of reinforcement learning, from how an agent's problem is framed to the methods used to train it. Questions use short scenarios, small tables of values and brief Python snippets, and ask the candidate to reason about what an algorithm does, why a training run behaves as it does, and which change would help.
- Questions are in English.
- Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.

What does the RL test measure?+
The RL test measures working knowledge of foundations, model-free methods, deep value and policy methods, and practical ways to make agent training work. Candidates reason through short scenarios, small tables of values, and brief Python snippets.
Who should take the RL test?+
It is intended for intermediate technical roles that build or tune learning agents, including machine learning engineers, AI engineers, robotics and autonomous systems engineers, data scientists, research scientists, and game AI developers.
How long does the RL test take, and what can candidates use?+
The RL test has 15 multiple-choice questions and a 10-minute time limit. Candidates may use scratch paper. A separate practice set has four questions and takes four minutes.
What kinds of questions are on the RL test?+
Questions use short scenarios, small tables of values, and brief Python snippets. They ask candidates to reason about what an algorithm does, why a training run behaves as it does, and which change might help.
